The Steam sales are a great way to blow your hard-earned cash on awesome games you’ve been mulling over purchasing for a while but have been putting off. 

Steam is currently running a sale specifically on open-world games. From now until 31 May you can grab discounts on a multitude of games that feature massive explorable playspaces. 

With so many games on sale though, it’s hard to know what to buy. Not to worry, we’re here to help! We’ve trawled through the list with a selection of games that are on special offer that we love and know you’re bound to as well.

Satisfactory (20 per cent off)

Satisfactory is a fantastic open-world sci-fi game that puts you on a distant planet gathering resources and building factories. You are free to explore a massive planet, while harvesting its resources for your own use. 

Control Ultimate Edition (save 40 per cent)

Control has been available for a while now, but when it came to Steam it arrived as an Ultimate Edition with two extra expansions and all the goodness possible from the game. This is an utterly stunning third-person action-adventure with weird physics and plenty of fun to be had. 

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (60 per cent off)

EA games have only just started making their way onto Steam and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is one of them. It’s also one of the best available and a fantastic experience from the Star Wars universe. A cracking third-person action-adventure crafted by the excellent Respawn Entertainment. 

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a brilliant story-driven game where you get to develop force powers along the way as well as crafting your own lightsabre. It’s an utter bargain at the moment too.

The Outer Worlds was one of our recommended games when it first launched. A fantastic action RPG in a sublime steampunk setting. In this game, you’ll be exploring a space colony and everything that has to offer. 

Human Fall Flat (66 per cent off)

Human: Fall Flat is a really fun game if you’re looking for something mellow, with a chilled out vibe, but hilarious physics, cheerful visuals and an interesting premise.

One of our favourite PC games is now nicely discounted during the Steam sales. Which is great as it’s also more entertaining when playing with friends and at this price, they can hardly turn it down.

Subnautica is an open-world survival game with a difference as it takes place underwater on an alien world fraught with danger. A beautiful game that’s incredibly popular and highly thought of.

Like to get your thrills in space? How about in a survival horror set in the Alien universe. The constant threat of death and an utter lack of resources to help you defend yourself make Alien: Isolation a real thrill ride. And with this nifty discount during the Steam sales, it’s worth grabbing.

Superhot VR has just recently had a free update and now it’s got a discount in time for Christmas as well. This is another cracking VR game with brilliant mechanics and glorious gameplay too. 

Red Dead Redemption II (33 per cent off)

Red Dead Redemption II has been knocking around for a while now, but like all good Rockstar games, it’s still going strong and is incredibly popular. We thoroughly enjoyed the campaign and when you’ve finished with the main story, there’s plenty to keep you busy online too. 

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (75 per cent off)

If you love a good story-rich game then look no further than Hellblade. This is a deeply immersive, atmospheric and breathtaking exploration of mental health in game form.

Step into the shoes of Sensua, the Celtic warrior who’s on a haunting vision quest into Hell. Hellbalde is now insanely cheap, you’d be mad to miss out on it. 

Medieval Dynasty (20 per cent off)

Go back to the middle ages and try to survive in a time rife with military conflict, hardship and more. Build your shelters and prepare to survive harsh winters and all manner of threats.

MORDHAU is a fantastic medieval slasher that we’ll happily admit we’re awful at. But even when you suck as badly as we do, you still have plenty of fun because it’s hilarious, satisfying and brutal too.

Slash, bash and crash your way through insane medieval battles with your pals or just rain down fire from afar with various siege weapons. Just be careful not to lose your head. 

Hell Let Loose (save 25 per cent)

Hell Let Loose is an intense World War II shooter that’s designed to be played with a well-oiled team, working hard to capture objectives and beat back the enemy. Realistic gameplay and serious military sim vibes with this one but it’s certainly a glorious game for fans of WWII games. 

Dirt Rally 2.0 (75 per cent off)

Codemasters crafted an absolute monster rallying game in the form of Dirt Rally a couple of years back. Then it went one better with Dirt Rally 2.0. Iconic cars, rallying locations and high-speed thrills abound. 

If you love racing sims or rallying in general, then you’ll love Dirt Rally 2.0, especially at this price. Oh and it has VR support too. What’s not to love? If you’re Dirt fan then you might want to check out the bundle that includes Dirt Rally, Dirt 4 and Dirt Rally 2.0 with 78 per cent off. It’s not long until Dirt 5 appears as well. 

Death Stranding (save 60 per cent)

Death Stranding really shines on PC, with glorious graphics, staggering landscapes and an intriguing story from the creators of Metal Gear Solid. It’s a weird and wonderful walking simulator and worth looking at at this price for sure. 

Middle-earth: Shadow of War (save 80 per cent)

Conquer Fortresses, battle and recruit Orcs into your own personal army and have a blast in the playground of Middle-earth. This game is great fun and both the standard and definitive versions are discounted. So grab a bargain today. 

Mafia: Definitive Edition (save 40 per cent)

Re-made from the ground up, Mafia: Definitive Edition is said to be “Faithfully recreated, with expanded story, gameplay and original score. This is the Mafia you remembered and much more.” Now it’s a bargain.

Star Wars: Squadrons (save 40 per cent)

Buckle up for some first-person, multiplayer space dogfights with or without your VR headset. This is a great outing into the Star Wars universe that’s ace for those who have always wanted to pilot a Star Wars craft.

With Borderlands 3, Gearbox took what people loved from the previous games and built upon it. All the madness and mayhem of the franchise only bigger, badder and more brilliant. That includes the addition of one billion guns – yup, a billion. Mad eh?

You’d also be mad not to buy it at this price, especially if you’ve been holding out for a discount. 

Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (85 per cent off)

Shadow of the Tomb Raider was the final chapter in Lara Croft’s origin story. A modern reboot that’s rife with wonderful puzzles, brilliantly beautiful tombs and a wild open world to explore. 

We loved the game when we reviewed it back in 2018 and it still stands up now, even more so with all the extras included in the definitive edition. 

Metro Exodus (70 per cent off)

Metro Exodus is another of those games that went to Epic store first and then made the move to Steam later. If you’d been putting it off for that reason, then you’ll be pleased to see it’s half price in the current Steam sales. You can also get the gold edition with a 60 per cent discount too. 

Metro Exodus is beautiful, engaging and another cracking addition to the series. A superb shooter with plenty of stealth elements, excellent pacing and oodles of radioactive personality too. 

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Game of the Year Edition (80 per cent off)

If you’ve not played The Witcher 3 yet, what have you even been doing with yourself? Seriously?! One of the finest role-playing games ever made, the Witcher 3 is, in our mind, an utter classic. 

The game of the year edition also includes all the expansions and other goodness too. Giving you well over 100 hours of gaming goodness for less than the cost of a large pizza. Get stuck in. 

Hitman 2 Gold Edition (75 per cent off)

Hitman 3 has just been announced and now Hitman 2 has been discounted as well. We found Hitman 2 to be a wonderful addition to the series with everything you’d expect from the series, as well as target-rich environments, brilliant maps and plenty of play options too. 

Hitman 2 is a brilliant stealth action where you take on the role of Agent 47 and visit all manner of exotic locations to deal out death to specific targets in the most professional manner possible. 

No Man’s Sky (50 per cent off)

No Man’s Sky sure has come a long way over the last few years. Regular updates have made it ever more interesting. Explore the vastness of space with your friends, in all manner of space ships, visiting distant worlds and exploring until your heart is content. 

We lost hours and hours in this game and have many fond memories. It’s also been updated to work with VR headsets lately, which is just insane. This means if you have the right equipment, you can basically get as close to travelling through space as you’re ever likely to get. 

Bomber Crew (80 per cent off)

Bomber Crew, the cute strategic simulation game sends you and your crew on dangerous missions where you need to manage fuel, ammo, hydraulics and more. Bomber Crew is fun because the crew are procedurally generated, including their names, skills and backstories which means you’re going to have a really unique experience. 

Kingdom Come: Deliverance Royal Edition (66 per cent off)

We almost gush when we talk about Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It’s an absolutely smashing RPG set in yee olden days where you play a simple son of a blacksmith forced into the midst of raging civil war.

It’s beautiful, immersive, engaging and a whole lot of fun. It’s also hours and hours long and with the Royal Editon you also get all the downloadable content too. At this price, you’d be mad not to grab it. 

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (80 per cent off)

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus was one of our recommended games from 2017 and despite not being the latest Wolfenstein game in the franchise it’s still worth getting. Especially at this price.

Better still you can get a bundle that includes Old Blood, New Colossus, Young Blood and New Order with a hefty 71 per cent off. So much Nazi slaying goodness in one place!

Half-Life: Alyx (40 per cent off)

It honestly feels like Half-Life: Alyx only just released and here it is discounted nicely. Sure, it’s not a massive discount yet, but it’s still one you should consider if you own a VR headset.

We found Half-Life: Alyx to be a wonderful update for the Half-Life franchise and an utter joy to play. We’re not alone either, as Steam is awash with overwhelmingly positive reviews.  

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (70 per cent off)

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is the biggest and most ambitious game in the franchise that we thought was utterly superb when we first reviewed it and is still fantastic two years later. 

Battle your way through ancient Greece, parkouring across the landscape or sailing across the seas. Battling it out with Spartans, pirates and Athenians along the way. An epic adventure awaits. 

Two Point Hospital (75 per cent off)

Ok, so we’ll admit we liked Two Point Hospital because of its similarity too Theme Hospital, but it’s an excellent sim/management game in its own right. 

Design your own hospital and manage all the problems that come with it. Including new diseases, weird illnesses and grumpy patients. 

Batman: Arkham Knight (75 per cent off)

Batman: Arkham Knight is in our mind one of the best Batman games and a real looker too. The final game in the trilogy is now on sale and it’s an absolute steal. 

Wreckfest (50 per cent off)

If your idea of a good racing game is something with a lot of crashing and smashing then you’ll love Wreckfest. Over-the-top crashes abound in a game that’s all about breakneck racing and demolition derby goodness. 

Revv your engines and ready your Steam wallet for petrol-head thrills. 

Saints Row: The Third (50 per cent off)

The bonkers, outlandish and hilarious Saints Row: The Third is now available for as much as a bottle of drink which is pretty insane. You can also grab a saving on the remastered version but if you don’t mind dates visuals then the original is a steal.

For more up-to-date Saints Row fun and frolics look no further than the fourth instalment which has a hefty discount during the sale period. More of the same chaos at a great price. 

Far Cry 5 (save 85 per cent)

Build the hype for Far Cry 6 by grabbing a bargain on the previous games. Both Far Cry 4 and Far Cry 5 are on sale during this sale period with massive discounts on the usual price. Explore everything that Far Cry has to offer, wing suiting your way around and tearing up the countryside on the hunt for fun.
