As you might have guessed from the trailers, Immortals tries to take themselves not too seriously. The story of Phoenix is ​​presented in the form of a story, which is read to Zeus by Prometheus chained to a rock (speaking in the Russian version in the voice of Vesemir from The Witcher 3), so that behind the scenes, both of them often comment on what is happening and joke from time to time. The humor is solid, the actors are not annoying, the feeling of awkwardness and shame for the narrators does not arise, and the jokes are often based on ancient Greek myths – if you have not gone deep into these topics before, you can even learn something new here. Plus, throughout the game, the idea is expressed that you should not be ashamed of your shortcomings and ideal people (gods) do not exist – not so much moral, but still.

The gameplay is also perceived positively in most cases, but it should be said right away that the basis of the gameplay is not very similar to Zelda. In Breath of the Wild, the player regularly feels like a discoverer – you look at an object from afar or from above, you approach it and you will definitely find something interesting there. In Immortals this way, you will hardly find something valuable, and it is not so convenient to do it – here you almost immediately get the opportunity to use distant vision (read: binoculars) and find new places with the help of the sight in the center of the screen. It will take many years to create a large open world and think over it to the smallest detail – Breath of The Wild, released in 2017, began to be developed back in 2011. Bad Immortals doesn’t do that, however – it has a lot of merits, including those related to the design of the world. Although it was not without annoying flaws.

The Golden Island offers entertainment at every step: here and running from one point to another, and control of the flight of an arrow, which must slip through all the rings on the way, and simplified “tags”. But the main thing is a huge number of puzzles, and if the game suggests their location, then the solutions are not shared at all, even at the lowest difficulty level. Either you need to put objects on the buttons that you sometimes find with difficulty, then move the boxes in a certain order, then use an arrow: fly over the fire, light it and crash into an extinguished torch near a nearby rock – there are plenty of options.

There is especially a lot of variety in the dungeons of Tartarus, where interesting finds are found one after another. It can be as a small series of puzzles of increasing difficulty, or one big puzzle, consisting of several small ones – the latter is usually found in story dungeons. There you find yourself in situations that do not exist in the open world. In one episode, you work with large cubes that fly off the ground when you first hit them and fall when you hit them second. In the other, you see cubes connected to each other – grabbing one, you move the second, regardless of its weight, and you can make double jumps.

It is a pity that some puzzles seem to be drawn-out due to the large number of platforms, the slow movement of the heroine when carrying objects or the need to perform too many actions. In one of the episodes, you need to roll two balls from one end of the location to the other through simple labyrinths, but some of their parts are destroyed – you need to find cubes and fill in the gaps. It’s hard to call it a riddle, since the solution is obvious, and that’s why it’s boring to do it all: running back and forth, summoning new balls when old ones fall, lifting cubes and slowly moving towards bridges – at such moments the game simply does not respect your time.

Fortunately, there are not many such tedious episodes. In most cases, you are happy to be distracted from the plot tasks and start “cleaning” the icons on the map. One of the main features borrowed from “Zelda” is a limited supply of stamina, which dries up when running fast, climbing rocks and flying. Therefore, at first, it is difficult to climb high mountains, but still there are many points of interest available – and there are equipment items that give bonuses to characteristics, all kinds of resources and ingredients to improve items in the inventory.

Immortals offers flexible character customization and does not punish for “wrong” leveling. Here you improve not one specific sword or a separate helmet, but the entire category as a whole, that is, the equipment itself has no defense and attack indicators. This allows you to experiment on the fly with all your junk in your inventory: one sword increases damage at full health, the other restores stamina when making a combo in the air; sometimes you get bonus ingredients with one breastplate, with another you can shoot a bow faster or increase your defense against unique enemies …

The combat system seems simple at first, but after gaining new skills, it becomes better and better. Phoenix has two types of blows: weak hits with a sword, and strong – with an ax. Heavy swings also hit the opponent’s stamina – when the scale runs out, the enemy will temporarily become immobilized. This is especially useful in boss fights, including cyclops, gorgons, and harpies. Later, completing tests and buying new skills for Charon’s coins, you learn to be attracted to flying opponents, make a quick dash towards enemies, summon a bird to interrupt the attacks of opponents, and much more. At times, all these colorful combos and slowdowns even make you remember Devil May Cry.


The main problem with Immortals Fenyx Rising is the lack of any new ideas. It borrows a lot from both other Ubisoft games and well-known releases from other studios, wraps it up in a funny story based on the myths and legends of Ancient Greece, but offers almost nothing new. The list of advantages still far outweighs a handful of disadvantages, but it’s difficult to call Immortals the best Ubisoft release this year.

Physicists from the Shanghai China University of Science and Technology (USTC) on their own quantum computer Jzhāng have implemented an experiment on sampling Gaussian bosons. The Jzhāng quantum system took 76 photons in 200 seconds, while a classical supercomputer would take 2.5 billion years.

An experiment at a Chinese university is not even a pen test. Scientists are still in doubt about the choice of physical principles on which quantum computers can be built, and are not even sure about the choice of the range of problems with which quantum systems will cope better than classical ones. Therefore, the experience gained, the path even it will not entail any practical results in the near future, is no less important than the obvious breakthrough.

At one time, theoretical physicists pinned many hopes on optical (photonic) quantum computers. This was due to the fact that photons promised to become qubits at room temperature, which would greatly simplify the assembly and operation of quantum systems. In practice, creating a multi-qubit optical quantum system would require millions of lasers and hundreds of millions of mirrors, prisms, and much more, which would make one forget about the notorious quantum superiority of optical quantum computers over classical ones.

The experience supplied by the Chinese has shown that even with a limited set of components, an optical quantum system is capable of surpassing the classical one, which means that there are prospects in this direction, you just have to work and work.

The problem of sampling Gaussian bosons by a classical computer is solved by the matrix method, which exponentially increases the computation time as the number of certain particles increases. An optical quantum computer is its own operating model for sampling Gaussian bosons. To calculate the result, you just need to experiment. And if each selection cycle on a quantum system takes up to 200 seconds, then the supercomputer must spend incomparably more time on this.

However, the Chinese installation presented by physicists is also not simple. The laser radiation is split into 25 beams and affects 25 crystals of potassium titanyl phosphate. After hitting each crystal, two photons fly out of it in opposite directions. The photons hit 100 entrances, each of which follows a path of 300 prisms and 75 mirrors. The system also has 100 exits with sensors at the end, which register particles that have reached the finish line. On average, over 200 second cycles, the USTC team detected about 43 photons per launch. But at one time they observed 76 photons – more than enough to justify a claim for quantum superiority.

A classical computer, under good circumstances, is able to calculate 50 photons in two days of calculations, and it may take 2.5 billion years to select 76 photons, as extrapolation says.

In addition to proving the fundamental possibility of achieving quantum superiority on an optical quantum computer, the result obtained can theoretically be applied to solving practical problems in the near future. For example, for solving specialized problems in quantum chemistry and mathematics.
