After a couple of very successful years since the relaunch of the Nokia brand, there has been some lull in the smartphone world. It seemed that neat, devoid of pathos and excessive ambition actions are gradually leading HMD Global up in the smartphone sales ranking, but the movement has slowed down. However, in the spring, optimistic signals began to come: this is the first time that profit from this business was recorded, and investments from Qualcomm, Google and (surprise surprise!) Nokia managed to attract. It’s time to launch fresh blood into the lineup.

Nokia 5.3, of course, did not become the breakthrough that will bring the returned brand to a new level of perception, but this is another “confident middle peasant”, a device in the price category of “about 15 thousand rubles”, which does not have any outstanding characteristics, but takes its successful a combination of qualities. Let’s see how successful.

Nokia 5.3 – information about the filling according to the CPU-Z application

⇡ #Design, ergonomics and software

The neatness hinting at the Scandinavian roots of the gadget can be traced in many smartphones of the revived Nokia, and the 5.3 model is also far from the experiments inherent in the past history of the brand.

Not too fashionable, but reliable solution with the placement of the front camera in the cutout, ribs and back, devoid of gloss. At first glance (more precisely, at the first touch) it may even seem that the body of the smartphone is made of metal, but no, this is a special composite material.

The fingerprint scanner is not under the screen, and not in the side key – it is pushed onto the back, into an inconspicuous recess under the camera block of the same round shape rhymed with it. Axial symmetry reigns in this unit – four lenses and a slightly elongated flash in the center.

Nokia 5.3, rear panel: a block with four cameras and a single LED flash, under it is a fingerprint scanner

The smartphone is offered in three colors – and not only cold, “nordic” ones: a warm, golden version is added to turquoise (as in our case) and graphite (black).

Fingerprints remain on the back. But – and this is important – the gadget is not too slippery. I will not offer it without fail – you can wear a smartphone without it, enjoying the original color. Moreover, there is no cover included in the Nokia 5.3 bundle.

The functional elements are quite familiar – with a couple of exceptions: the Google Assistant call button is located on the left side, and the power button located on the right side received a backlight signaling received notifications. On the upper edge, you can be pleasantly surprised to find a mini-jack, but we are still not talking about a flagship device – in the mid-budget price category, an analog audio jack is still in the order of things.

I have already mentioned the scanner on the back panel above. This solution looks quite logical – a capacitive sensor is better than any optical or ultrasonic sensor, which are used in on-screen scanners, and scanners in the side keys suffer from insufficient coverage and false positives. Here everything is in place and works as it should. If desired, you can duplicate it with a face recognition system for which the front camera is used.

Nokia 5.3 is not included in the Android One program, so you shouldn’t hope for special preferences in terms of high-speed updates, but friendship with Google allows us to expect that the smartphone, which runs almost pure Android 10 by default, will timely switch to the eleventh and twelfth versions. There is almost no additional software, as always with Nokia. Only the Yandex widget built into the notification panel, but these are features of the Russian market. However, friendship with Google, in addition to all the delights of a “pure robot” and a long history of updates, has other consequences – I’m talking about the “Assistant”, available in two places at once: not only by pressing a separate key, but also on the lock screen.

⇡ #Display, sound, Nokia Power

The Nokia 5.3 has an impressive 6.55-inch display with an HD resolution of 1600 × 720 pixels. The result is a low pixel density of 268 ppi. You can notice some looseness of the fonts, even if in general it is not too striking. The matrix is IPS, so you can safely count on free viewing angles.

HMD Global says nothing about HDR10 support or some other screen exploits. There is quite a standard display with a polarizing layer and a good oleophobic coating.

Display brightness measured at 451 cd / m22 Is the average result for an LCD matrix. In the bright sun, you can use your smartphone without any particular problems, but not very comfortable. But the contrast level is really good – 1642: 1.

There are practically no image settings in the conventional “shell” of Nokia 5.3 – only fonts can be adjusted, the ability to turn on light / dark mode, and the like. From directly related to the picture – you can manually change the color temperature. And, looking ahead, I will say that this option for a smartphone is not superfluous at all.

The average gamma on the Nokia 5.3 display is more than an acceptable 2.18 with flat curves. The color temperature is greatly overestimated – it ranges from 8,500 to 10,500 K. This is what can be adjusted in the settings, but considering the range of fluctuations, this will hardly help to make the picture on the smartphone screen as natural as possible. The average DeltaE deviation for the extended Color Checker palette (shades of gray + a wide range of color shades) is 6.52, with a norm of 3.00 and a standard of 2.00. This is not only due to excessively cold shades, but also due to the not entirely correct color space – in area it roughly corresponds to the sRGB standard, but is offset.

The Nokia 5.3 has a mini jack. At the very least, you don’t have to suffer if you suddenly run out of charge in your headphones: plugged in via a cable – and listen to the podcast further. Music is a little more complicated – Nokia 5.3, undoubtedly, makes it possible to listen to it, but it cannot boast of a very cool sound. However, this is rather a normal, just not outstanding, level. With wireless data transmission, the situation is the same – here Bluetooth 4.2, there is aptX profile, but the smartphone does not support LDAC. The device performs telephone duties confidently.

Together with the smartphone, I was able to try branded TWS-headphones Nokia Power Earbuds (BH-605) – they turned out to be very interesting. First of all, they attract a large and rather heavy (but still fit in a pocket) case, which is made so large for a reason – the built-in battery allows you to count on 150 hours of operation on a single charge. Headphones, of course, are charged directly in this case and work on a single charge for five hours each. The rather large “droplets” nevertheless fit comfortably in the ear, and due to the in-ear design with silicone ear cushions, the headphones stay firmly in the ears and provide good passive noise isolation.

To display the headphones in the list of devices available for synchronization via Bluetooth, just open the case – and you can connect them to devices with both Bluetooth 5.0 (the module of this version is installed in Nokia Power) and Bluetooth 4.2, as in Nokia 4.2. The headset sounds normal – there are also quite pronounced low frequencies, and the highs are not eaten. It is also worth noting the all-weather properties of the headphones – IPX7 waterproof rating allows them to be used in the rain. Nokia Power 5 costs 990 rubles – quite a fair price for a similar model. But there is a sand-colored kit with Nokia 5.3 – together with the headphones, the smartphone is sold for 15,990 rubles. Very beneficial.

Hardware and performance

Nokia 5.3 received the mid-range hardware platform Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 – we previously met with it on the moto G8 smartphone, which looks like one of the closest smartphones on the market in terms of positioning, albeit a little more affordable.

The main part of the Snapdragon 665 consists of eight Kryo 260 cores with a frequency of up to 2.0 GHz, an Adreno 610 graphics subsystem with Vulkan 1.1 support, a Spectra 165 image processor and a Hexagon 686 signal processor. The technological process is 11 nm.

In terms of performance, Nokia 5.3 keeps on the average level for its class. The gaming capabilities are low, the animations when scrolling on the screen are a little twitchy, and it takes a couple of seconds to open the browser or camera. But all basic applications work without problems and slowdowns, stably.

There are no problems with throttling – the processor keeps the frequency at a high level even under heavy load. A decrease to 83% occurred at the start – the smartphone reacted to the workload with a delay. At the end, the frequencies dropped to 85-86%, but this is quite within the normal range. Average performance during testing is 140 GIPS. The moto G8 with the same hardware platform, for example, has a performance of 108 GIPS.

There are three versions of Nokia 5.3 in terms of RAM: 3, 4 and 6 GB (LPDDR4X). In Russia, only versions with 3 or 4 GB of RAM are available. There are no options for the drive – only 64 GB, but with the possibility of expanding with a microSD card with a capacity of up to 512 GB, for which a separate slot is provided.

⇡ #Communication and wireless communications

Nokia 5.3 has two slots for nano-SIM operator cards. Both slots work with 4G networks, LTE of the fourth category is supported with a maximum data reception rate of 150 Mbit / s with the ranges necessary for the correct operation of the network in Russia.

Nokia 5.3, slot for two nano-SIM and one microSD memory card

Nokia 5.3, slot for two nano-SIM and one microSD memory card

There are all the wireless modules necessary for a modern smartphone, except for the IrDA: Bluetooth 4.2 (with aptX), NFC (with Google Pay support), dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11 b / g / n / ac). The navigation module interacts with GPS (A-GPS), GLONASS and BeiDou systems.

⇡ #Camera

The Nokia 5.3 uses a quad camera, but quantity does not always translate into quality. How many cameras are in a smartphone is undoubtedly an important question, but the result depends on what is included.

In this case, only two cameras are responsible for different focal lengths (this is a key point): the main (13 Mp, ƒ / 1.8, phase detection autofocus) and the wide-angle (5 Mp, ƒ / 2.4, no autofocus). The other two perform rather an auxiliary function – this is a special camera for macro photography with a resolution of 2 megapixels and aperture ratio of ƒ / 2.4 and a so-called depth sensor for correct operation of portrait mode.

The main camera produces a high-quality, sharp picture with pleasant color rendition and a decent dynamic range (HDR helps if necessary), while the wide-angle module takes pictures with a noticeable lack of sharpness even in perfect light. In low light, the wide-angle camera fails.

At night, Nokia 5.3 shoots relatively well – of course, in complete darkness it will not work, but in normal street lighting it is quite.

⇡#Autonomous work

⇡#Conclusion

Advantages:

  • аккуратный дизайн и нескользкий корпус;
  • чистый Android;
  • неплохое качество съемки на основной модуль квадрокамеры;
  • съемка 4K-видео;
  • выделенный слот для карточки microSD;
  • есть NFC.

Disadvantages:

  • дисплей невысокого разрешения;
  • посредственное качество съемки на широкоугольный модуль;
  • невысокая производительность;
  • долгое время зарядки.
