Unofficial sources mention the code name “Arcturus” for a very long time, and only in February it became clear that it hides the Radeon Instinct MI100 computation accelerator, combining architecture similar to Navi with HBM2 memory. Now plans for an accelerator exit in the next half year are confirmed by AMD Technical Director.
According to the WCCFTech website, Mark Papermaster had to answer questions about the timing of the debut of the Radeon Instinct MI100 during a broadcast from the Dell EMC event. As is already known from AMD’s presentations, accelerators of calculations based on the brand’s GPUs in their development will go in an evolutionary way separate from video cards, having received the CDNA architecture. The first-born of the family will receive 7-nm manufacturing technology, a second-generation AMD Infinity interface, as well as up to 32 GB of HBM2 memory.
The indicative technical specifications of the Radeon Instinct MI100 have already been discussed previously. The number of stream processors compared to its predecessors can be increased to 8192 units. The performance gain will be twofold. The graphics processor with the CDNA architecture will operate at frequencies from 1090 to 1333 MHz, the memory frequency can reach 1000 MHz. It is important that the TDP level will be reduced to 200 W, this will certainly allow equipping the boards of the Radeon Instinct MI100 accelerators with passive radiators, which in the server chassis will be blown by powerful case fans.
