It became known that at present Russian specialists are liquidating the consequences of the leakage of toxic fuel from the Frigate upper stage, which is located at the Kourou Cosmodrome in French Guiana. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the press service of the state corporation Roscosmos.
“This is a fairly lengthy procedure, but after it will be possible to identify ways to resolve the problem.“, – commented on this issue the representative of the press service of Roscosmos.
Recall, on May 21, at the storage site of the Frigate booster block, an oxidizer vapor detection system, which is toxic nitrogen tetroxide, was activated. At the beginning of this month, Russian specialists were delivered to the Kourou Cosmodrome, who inspected the upper stage and determined the amount of necessary work that would eliminate the consequences of the leak.
The malfunction was detected in the Frigate upper stage, which was planned to be used together with the Soyuz-ST-A launch vehicle to launch the UAE Falcon Eye-2 satellite into space. The launch of the device was scheduled for March of this year, but was delayed due to problems with the same overclocking unit, which in the end they decided to replace with a spare one. In mid-March, the Kourou spaceport was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, so the launch of the Falcon Eye-2 was delayed until October. Due to the delayed launch, Russian specialists had to drain the fuel from Fregat, after which they returned to Russia.
Recall that since 2011, 23 launches of Russian Soyuz launch vehicles were carried out from the site of the Kourou spaceport, during one of which, in 2014, the European Galileo navigation satellites were delivered to off-design orbit.
