Audi has announced the start of series production of the premium all-electric e-tron GT sedan. It will be the first Audi electric car made in Germany. The company produces its electric crossover e-tron in Belgium.
Audi unveiled the e-tron GT prototype in 2018 and it has already grabbed the attention of users thanks to its appearance in the Avengers movie. The electric vehicle will be built at the Böllinger Höfe sports car plant in Neckarsulm, Baden-Württemberg, where the Audi R8 mid-engined sports car is being assembled.
In anticipation of the start of production of the e-tron GT, the plant underwent modernization, since the enterprise was designed for small-scale assembly. In particular, a new overhead conveyor was installed here, as well as 34 robots.
The bodywork is reported to be 85% automated. The assembly of the Audi e-tron GT is carried out on a joint line with the Audi R8, despite their different technological concepts, which is a unique experience for the Volkswagen AG automaker.
The e-tron GT is based on the J1 platform, created by Audi in collaboration with Porsche, which is using it to produce the Taycan. Böllinger Höfe has already produced plug-in hybrids for Audi, and its director, Helmut Stettner, believes this has helped them get the e-tron GT into production faster.
