Britain plans to abandon Huawei equipment in its 5G networks

After months of pressure from the United States, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson seems ready to completely ban the use of Huawei equipment in British 5G networks, the Financial Times reported. Citing national security concerns, members of the British Conservative Party insist that Huawei technology be excluded from the 5G infrastructure and the rest of the country’s telecommunications networks by 2023.

The administration of Donald Trump (Donald Trump) has long banned the government from using Huawei technology, and in May last year, the US president signed a decree banning US companies from buying foreign-made telecommunications equipment that could pose a threat to the national security of the United States. The order does not single out a single company, but is seen as a way to close the US market for Chinese companies like ZTE and Huawei. Last week, the ban was extended until May 2021.

The U.S. claims that Huawei could embed special vulnerabilities in its network infrastructure to help spy on the Chinese government. Huawei has repeatedly denied this charge, but gradually the sanctions against the Chinese telecommunications giant are only intensifying.

Donald Trump has reportedly called Boris Johnson earlier this year to encourage Britain to abandon Huawei equipment. One of the members of the US Congress also said that the country was going to reduce its cooperation with the United Kingdom in the field of intelligence sharing, if the latter did not abandon Chinese telecommunications solutions.

Boris Johnson had previously banned the use of Huawei equipment in key and most vulnerable parts of 5G networks in the UK. In January, he emphasized that the country does not have many other options for deploying 5G infrastructure. And the operator Vodafone said that removing Huawei equipment from its networks would be an extremely expensive task. But the arguments of the United States, obviously, were more significant.
