For beginners who still do not dare to independently “make” a PC for themselves, a detailed step-by-step guide on assembling the system unit has been published. It turns out that in “Computer of the Month” I tell you how to build a computer, and in the manual – how to do it.

⇡ # Starting assembly

Initially, the starting assembly recommended video cards of the level of GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER and Radeon RX 570 8 GB. These accelerators made it possible to play any modern games in Full HD resolution with at least average graphics quality. Now the starting assembly is designed to upgrade the video card up to the level of the GeForce RTX 3060.

Each issue of “Computer of the Month” is given to me harder and harder. It would seem that in April there is an excellent informational lead for another material: Rocket Lake processors and motherboards based on 500-series chipsets went on sale. Only now this event is overshadowed by the continuing shortage of video cards – and over the past month it has only intensified. It turns out a very strange picture: the mass platforms AM4 and LGA1200 have got their own best solutions, but there is no way to build a really cool gaming PC. More precisely, there is an opportunity – there is no desire to overpay for devices, the cost of which exceeds the recommended price (or the real former – take at least the prices of October-November last year) by two, or even three times. I have already repeated several times: I simply cannot raise my hand to recommend this within the framework of the “Computer of the Month”.

But I will be frank with you: in this issue, I still wanted to present two assembly options for the starting and optimal configurations: the first – for a quick upgrade; the second is real, with the video cards and prices that are on the market now. And so I tried to calculate such an assembly: a 4-core Core i3-10100F in the Box configuration (with a cooler, that is) costs 8,500 rubles, and on the H410 board you can save another 2,000 rubles. If we leave the rest of the components from the starting configuration, then such a semi-finished product (it is inoperative – the integrated graphics are disabled for Intel chips with the letter “F” in the name) will cost us 31,000 rubles. Only here the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti in Ikskom costs at least 20.5 thousand rubles, and the GeForce GTX 1650 – 24 thousand. For the SUPER version of this video card they ask for 27,000 rubles. Of course, in some Moscow stores you can find the listed adapters cheaper, but on average, the situation in Moscow is exactly this. Let me remind you: back in November, the GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER cost an average of 15,000 rubles.

It turns out that the assembly with the Core i3-10100F, H410 Express and GeForce GTX 1650 will cost you 55 thousand rubles. Such a system will pull new AAA games at best with average graphics quality settings, but with such a PC it will be comfortable to play hits of 5-7 years ago, as well as in all kinds of undemanding projects. I believe that it is easier to wait out this time with a system unit “for an upgrade” than to overpay so much for frankly weak and irrelevant products.

But in this matter, your opinion is very important for me: write in the comments if tables with game assemblies are needed in the heading, as they say, here and now – let the video cards cost too much now?

New Core i3s have also gone on sale – as you know, we are talking about the same generation of Comet Lake, which received a slight factory overclocking. For example, the Core i3-10105F is clocked at 4.2 GHz with all four cores loaded. The same Core i3-10100F operates at 4.1 GHz in similar conditions. It turns out that in April you will have to pay an average of 1,000 rubles more for an increase in 100 MHz. And take (for now) a more expensive motherboard.

I’ll be honest: my confidence is melting every month, and the concept “fast upgrade”In fact turns out to be more and more extensible. Every day, the hope that the shortage of video cards will end at least in 2021 is diminishing. The same AMD and NVIDIA do not contribute to the improvement of the market situation in any way. The first refused to limit the possibilities for mining in their video cards. The second one accidentally (by chance?) Released a driver for the GeForce RTX 3060 that allows you to bypass the limitation in mining performance. We can only hope that at least some conditionally gaming model will appear on the market that is not of interest to miners and is suitable for games – at least the level of the GeForce GTX 1650.

Assembly under swiftthe upgrade over the past month has hardly changed. The unpleasant news is that RAM is also becoming more expensive – in 2 months, simple kits with a volume of 16 GB, on average, added 1,000 rubles to the price.

As always, in the basic assembly, the stake is made on the LGA1200 platform and the 6-core Core i5-10400. Yes, a system unit with Ryzen 5 3600 is not much inferior to the proposed Intel configuration (in resource-intensive tasks it will be mostly faster, in games – a little slower), but there are nuances. The good news is that the 6-core Zen 2 has dropped significantly this spring and costs an average of 500 rubles less than the Core i5-10400. The bad news is that the chip does not have built-in graphics, so you will have to buy some kind of “plug” in pair with it, which are also getting more expensive against the backdrop of the mining boom. For the same GeForce GT 710 you will have to pay 4000 rubles.

Once, within the framework of one publication, I was accused of venality by AMD fans, Intel fans and NVIDIA fans alike. This is the lot of any 3DNews author – to be always wrong. But again the AM4 assembly is missing here for obvious reasons. And yet, if you already have a graphics card or plan to buy (for example, used) a discrete graphics accelerator anyway, a system with Ryzen 5 3600 will be an excellent solution. The only point: do not skimp on the motherboard, so that later the 6-core Zen 2 can be changed, for example, to the 8-core Zen 3.

Basically, the same approach can be applied to the Intel starter build. If you already have a video card or it will certainly appear, there is no point in spending money on a Core i5-10400 – the same Core i5-10400F costs an average of 2,500 rubles less. Using a CPU with integrated graphics or buying a “plug” of the level of the GeForce GT 710 is a forced move, since the “Computer of the Month” offers real assemblies. That’s it, I played enough with the recommendations of virtual GeForce RTX 3070 at non-existent prices a couple of weeks before their announcement. I still feel awkward.

Due to the fact that the assemblies in the heading are focused on the subsequent upgrade and we are talking mainly about potentially gaming systems, there is no place for AMD processors with integrated graphics. For example, Ryzen 3 PRO 4350G (4 cores, 8 threads) costs 15,000 rubles in Ikskom taking into account a slight rounding off – of course, when installing a video card of a good level, this chip will yield to both Ryzen 5 3600 and Core i5-10400 in games. It will yield decently if you install a video card in the assembly, say, of the level of GeForce RTX 3060 or an analogue from AMD, when it appears and will cost normally.

I would not have put in the assembly Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G – a 12-thread chip based on the Zen 2 microarchitecture. And this is because these “stones” have the third-level cache cut to 8 MB – this is also why the “Proshki” are inferior in games Ryzen 5 3600 is on average a notable 25%, if you use a sufficiently powerful video card in the stand.

The starting Intel assembly is suitable for further CPU upgrade, since I installed a board based on the B560 chipset in the system, which will work well with the Core i5-10400 even in the most complex resource-intensive applications, and will also allow installing an NVMe drive over time. Previously, if you wanted to swap out the 6-core Comet Lake for a Rocket Lake chip, you had to take a board based on the H470 or Z490 Express chipsets. Even last year, I recommended such motherboards in some assemblies – for example, the ASUS PRIME Z490M-PLUS and ASRock H470 PHANTOM GAMING 4. At the time of this writing, I did not find BIOS versions with the long-awaited Rocket Lake support, and there is a non-zero probability that such firmware will not come out at all. But let’s hope for the best.

New motherboards supporting Rocket Lake out of the box have already appeared on the market, but so far the choice of inexpensive and high-quality models is frankly small. We go to the website of the partner store and see:

  • 3 models H510 Express costing from 7 to 9.5 thousand rubles.
  • 12 B560 Express models priced from 8.5 to 20.5 thousand rubles.
  • 6 models H570 Express at a price from 11 to 14.5 thousand rubles.
  • 29 Z590 Express models costing from 14.5 to 98 thousand rubles.

For example, for ASRock B560M PRO4 they ask an average of 10,000 rubles. On the one hand, it comes out a little expensive, and instead of it, you can take ASRock B460M PRO4 for 8,500 rubles. On the other hand, a motherboard of the ASUS PRIME Z490M-PLUS class costs 13,000 rubles on average. If we compare with it, then, on the contrary, we save 3,000 rubles, but we get a system with the potential to upgrade to Core 11000 and use DDR4-3000 + memory. Yes, all motherboards based on the low-end logic kits of the 500 series support the memory overclocking function. I think the overpayment of 1,500-2,000 rubles is quite reasonable in this case.

You can read more about the new chipsets for the LGA1200 platform here. In my opinion, a motherboard based on the B560 chipset will be enough for a gaming assembly without overclocking the processor. Such devices have M.2 slots connected to the PCI Express processor lines, in which you can install modern high-speed SSDs with PCI Express 4.0 support.

IMPORTANT! The new 500-series motherboards went on sale long before Intel had new processors ready, so they only have a pre-supported BIOS version. With this firmware, Rocket Lake will start, but will not work as expected. Therefore, the first customers of the Core 11000 series chips will have to start by updating the BIOS on the board anyway.

⇡ # Optimal assembly

Initially, this assembly used video cards of the GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER and Radeon RX 5700 class, allowing you to play with high quality graphics even in WQHD resolution. Now the GeForce RTX 3060 begs here (and AMD analog when it goes on sale).

I think the new motherboards based on the 500 series chipsets will be easy to figure out. Now devices based on the Z590 Express, in fact, are needed only for status assemblies with overclocking capabilities. In all other cases, the B560 board will do just fine. We can see something similar on the AM4 platform – I have not recommended buying “red” X-series chipsets for a long time, when there are good-quality devices based on B450 and B550 logic on sale. As part of an optimal Intel assembly, the main thing is to answer one question: will I eventually change from a 6-core to an 8-core model? If so, then it is better to take, of course, a better board, since the new Rocket Lake is not energy efficient and requires a really good power converter.

In addition, not everything is smooth with the Rocket Lake processors. The chips went on sale – and in quite a large number, but so far their cost is frankly overpriced. The first on our site was a review of the Core i9-11900K model – the new flagship of the LGA1200 platform. But the most interesting for most will definitely be the models of the Core i5 and Core i7 series.

I’ll start from afar. For a very long time, within the framework of the optimal assembly, I recommended the Core i5-10400 (F) model, and not the Core i5-10500 (18,000 rubles), the Core i5-10600 (20,000 rubles) or the Core i5-10600K (21,000 rubles). Why is that? My choice when loading all cores runs at 4 GHz and consumes more than 65 W, so it’s better not to save too much on the motherboard. It turns out, comparing Core i5-10400 with other 6-cores in the series, we pay 3,000 rubles for just 200 MHz gain and 5,000 rubles for 400 MHz. I consider the overpayment for such a small increase unreasonable, but, as always, I do not insist. As for me, it is better to invest this money in a high-quality motherboard – and provide the system with stability and reliability for a long time, and not choose slightly faster processors in the middle family.

A similar situation is observed between the models Ryzen 5 3600, Ryzen 5 3600X (19,500 rubles) and Ryzen 5 3600XT (20,500 rubles).

If we return to the conversation about 6-cores Rocket Lake, then in early April they received the following prices:

  • Core i5-11400F (4.2 GHz with all cores loaded) costs 17,500 rubles;
  • Core i5-11400 (4.2 GHz) – 19,500 rubles;
  • Core i5-11500 (4.2 GHz) – 20,000 rubles;
  • Core i5-11600 (4.3 GHz) – 22,000 rubles;
  • Core i5-11600KF (4.6 GHz) – 24,500 rubles;
  • Core i5-11600K (4.6 GHz) – 26,500 rubles.

As you can see, here is exactly the same situation – and with such a difference in price, there is no point in taking the same Core i5-11600. Yes, this processor uses the faster integrated graphics UHD Graphics 750, but even that will not provide a good FPS in modern games (and in non-modern ones either). But the Core i5-11600K will work faster already at 400 MHz, but you will have to pay as much as 7,000 rubles for such an increase. Therefore, this chip needs to be taken for overclocking while simultaneously investing in the purchase of a Z590 board.

If you read the article “Core i9-11900K Review: Gaming Performance Returns to Intel,” then you know that the flagship Rocket Lake is well ahead of the Core i7-10700K in both work applications and games. For example, in Cinebench R23, a brand new 8-core was faster by 28%, in Adobe Premiere Pro 2020 – by 16%, and in x265 – by 18%. When all cores are loaded, the Core i9-11900K frequency reaches 5.1 GHz, and the Core i7-10700K frequency reaches 4.7 GHz, but still the main contribution to the victory is made by the Cypress Cove microarchitecture.

Such a comparison makes it clear already now how much the Core i5-11400 will be faster than the Core i5-10400: of course, we will not get 16-28%, as in the case of 8-cores, but the difference will still be very, very noticeable. In addition, in assemblies with such 6-core processors, it is the processors that have a chance to be a bottleneck when installing a sufficiently powerful video card.

And we see that in some games (Civilization VI, Far Cry New Dawn, A Total War Saga: TROY and others), the Core i9-11900K is ahead of the Core i7-10700K by a decent 15-20% with an average difference of 8%. If we used 6-cores together with the GeForce RTX 3090 and a not so cool set of RAM, this difference would be even more impressive.

So even now, without holding the Core i5-11400 in our hands, we can safely say that this chip will be clearly better than the Core i5-10400 – and you need to take it into the optimal assembly. At the same time, the younger Rocket Lake will noticeably outperform the Ryzen 5 3600 in games. You will see this in our subsequent reviews – the test laboratory will certainly study in detail all the most interesting models of Rocket Lake chips.

In the case of the Core i5-11400, the problem is that while the price of this chip is frankly overstated: the Core i5-10400 costs 4,500 rubles less (and 3,000 rubles less than the Core i5-11400F), and the Ryzen 5 3600 costs 5,000 rubles less. True, you need to buy a “plug” for the AMD chip (-4,000 rubles to the difference), and in comparison with the March assembly, a small saving on the motherboard was added.

Another advantage of Rocket Lake over Comet Lake is the use of the Xe-LP graphics core – and this is very important in the era of video cardless. The so-called UHD Graphics 750 and UHD Graphics 730 boast significant advances against the backdrop of the 600-series’ build-in: Rocket Lake graphics support HDMI 2.0b and DisplayPort 1.4a and can display images on three monitors at 4K @ 60 FPS simultaneously. In terms of decoding, Intel has added compatibility with the 12-bit HEVC and VP9 formats, as well as 10-bit AV1, to the media engine. At the same time, QuickSync technology now allows, among other things, hardware acceleration of encoding 8-bit AVC, as well as 10-bit HEVC and VP9.

Hopefully, the cost of the Core i5-11400 will drop pretty quickly, because this 6-core should cost the same as the Core i5-10400. Well, it’s also interesting to see how AMD responds.

Пожалуйста, простите меня за то, что я отговаривал читателей покупать GeForce RTX 3070 за 56 тысяч рублей. Сейчас такая сумма выглядит фантастикой, ведь в апреле за этот Ampere-ускоритель придется отдать минимум 133 тысячи…

В марте в продажу поступила Radeon RX 6700 XT. При рекомендованной цене в 479 долларов США ее рублевая стоимость и близко не приближается к этому значению. В X-Com Shop различные версии Radeon RX 6700 XT стоят от 95,5 до 102,5 тысяч рублей. Наше тестирование показало, что новинка AMD оказывается быстрее Radeon RX 5700 XT всего на 21 % в разрешении WQHD и по уровню производительности соответствует GeForce RTX 3060 Ti — правда, в тех играх, где не используется трассировка лучей. При включении DXR отставание Radeon RX 6700 XT от конкурента оказывается весьма внушительным — 63-65 % в зависимости от разрешения.

Рекомендованная стоимость GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, напомню, составляет 399 долларов США. В таких условиях можно было бы назвать новинку AMD неудачной: Radeon RX 6700 XT не обходит ускоритель NVIDIA даже в играх без трассировки лучей. Однако здесь, в реальной жизни, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti либо отсутствует в продаже, либо стоит в районе 120 тысяч рублей.

Видеокарты NVIDIA, кстати, получили поддержку технологии Resizable BAR — надо только обновить BIOS ускорителя.

Зато 6-ядерный Ryzen 5 5600X продолжает дешеветь — в апреле за него просят уже меньше 26 тысяч! Чуть дешевле оказываются Ryzen 7 3700X (24 500 рублей) и Ryzen 7 PRO 3700 (24 000 рублей), однако, так как наши сборки рассчитаны на применение в играх (рано или поздно системы все-таки получат нормальные видеокарты), выбор в «Компьютере месяца» однозначно падает на 6-ядерный Zen 3. И очень жаль, что разница в цене между Ryzen 5 5600X и Ryzen 7 5800X составляет почти 10 000 рублей. Но если есть возможность взять именно 8-ядерник — надо брать его.

Определиться с процессором для продвинутой сборки Intel оказывается гораздо сложнее. В прошлом месяце использовался 8-ядерный Core i7-10700, который за прошедший месяц даже чуточку подорожал — до 27 500 рублей. С учетом выхода более быстрых (в играх) чипах Rocket Lake сюда так и напрашивается замена:

  • 6-ядерный Core i5-10600K стоит 26 500 рублей;
  • 8-ядерный Core i7-11700 стоит 33 000 рублей.

Ситуацию со старшим 6-ядерником Intel я уже разобрал: этот чип надо брать под разгон, а следовательно, придется вкладываться в покупку хорошей материнской платы на чипсете Z590. Так, ASUS PRIME Z590M-PLUS стоит 18 тысяч, а GIGABYTE Z590 GAMING X — 18,5 тысяч, и здесь речь идет о платах начального уровня в своей категории. Естественно, надо более основательно подойти и к охлаждению разгоняемого процессора.

Покупая 8-ядерный Core i7-11700 прямо сейчас, мы, с одной стороны, переплачиваем 5,5 тысяч рублей — если сравнивать с 8-ядерным Comet Lake. С другой — мы получаем гарантированную поддержку PCI Express 4.0, более качественную и продвинутую встроенную графику, а также заметный прирост быстродействия во всех задачах. Ну а сбросить общую цену продвинутой сборки поможет, например, покупка платы на B560-чипсете.

По сути, купив 8-ядерный Rocket Lake, мы никак не улучшим сборку в будущем, так как платформа LGA1200, образно выражаясь, прибыла на конечную остановку. А вот Ryzen 5 5600X со временем всегда можно будет заменит более быстрым чипом — тем же Ryzen 9 5900X, например. Ведь когда-то дефицит 12- и 16-ядерных Zen 3 закончится!

А пока — и это нельзя не заметить — продвинутые сборки AMD и Intel заметно отличаются друг от друга в плане производительности. Очень жаль, что «красные» откровенно не спешат насытить рынок другими Zen 3-моделями, хотя я уверен, что в AMD готовят свой ответ чипам Rocket Lake, представленным довольно широко прямо со старта продаж. Скажу больше: я все еще надеюсь, что в открытую продажу поступит Ryzen 7 5800 — он мало в чем уступает X-версии, но стоит при этом меньше.

В конце марта на нашем сайте вышел обзор нового накопителя Samsung — 980. Этот SSD не получил в названии никакой приставки (EVO, EVO PLUS, PRO), и, в общем-то, не имеет ничего общего с производительными сериями корейского производителя. Samsung 980 — это сборка с TLC-памятью, поддерживающая стандарт PCI Express 3.0 и лишенная DRAM-буфера. Отсутствие буфера серьезно сказывается на быстродействии, когда нужно в один заход считать с накопителя значительный объем информации, — в этом случае SSD попросту захлебывается. Если же от Samsung 980 не требовать передачи большого объема данных, то его производительность выглядит вполне приемлемо: этот накопитель даже опережает сверхпопулярный Samsung 970 EVO, но стоит при этом заметно меньше.

Давайте еще раз взглянем на результаты Core i9-11900K и сравним их с показателями Core i9-10900K, ведь в плане количества ядер серия Core i9 сделала шаг назад. Благодаря технологии Intel Adaptive Boost, когда чип работает в определенном температурном режиме (по умолчанию — 70 градусов Цельсия, но этот параметр может меняться) и с определенным энергопотреблением, частота Core i9-11900K при загрузке всех ядер может достигать 5,1 ГГц. Десятиядерный Core i9-10900K, как известно, держит только 4,9 ГГц. В таких реалиях чипы демонстрируют довольно схожие результаты: где-то чуть быстрее оказывается Rocket Lake (Visual Studio, VEGAS PRO, Photoshop 2021), где-то — Comet Lake (Blender, V-Ray, Topaz Video, VeraCrypt).

В играх же в разрешении Full HD система с Core i9-11900K и GeForce RTX 3090 оказалась быстрее сборки с Core i9-10900K всего на 5 %, хотя есть игры (Far Cry New Dawn, Civilization VI, A Total War Saga: TROY), в которых разница по минимальному FPS превысила 10 %. Естественно, в разрешении Ultra HD эти чипы демонстрируют практически одинаковые результаты. А еще «камни» Zen 3 (8 и 12 ядер) мало в чем уступают Rocket Lake в играх.

При этом Core i9-11900K — это самая настоящая печка, с которой стенд в приложениях, использующих AVX-инструкции, может потреблять больше (!) 400 Вт электроэнергии. Даже Core i9-10900K оказывается менее прожорливым, хоть разница и составляет ничтожные 13 Вт.

Все это уже сейчас позволяет сделать два довольно глобальных вывода. Во-первых, покупать даже в максимальную сборку Core i9 нового поколения нет никакого смысла. Да, Rocket Lake оказывается чуть лучше Comet Lake в играх, а потому брать все же надо чип, использующий более современную микроархитектуру (мы точно так же поступаем, выбирая между Zen 3 и Zen 2). В таком случае идеальным кандидатом для максимальной сборки Intel становится Core i7-11700K — он обладает теми же характеристиками, пусть и не поддерживает функцию Intel Adaptive Boost. Так, чип при загрузке всех ядер работает на частоте 4,6 ГГц, однако разницу в мегагерцах легко исправить самостоятельным разгоном. Наши (и не только наши) эксперименты показывают, что Core i7-11700K хорошо разгоняется до 5 ГГц.

Во-вторых, войну в верхнем ценовом диапазоне выиграла AMD и платформа AM4 в частности. Конкурент 12-ядерному Ryzen 9 5900X представлен не был, и в рамках платформы LGA1200 выпущен уже не будет. Плюс чипы Rocket Lake не предложили ничего принципиально быстрого для игровых ПК, а разницу в 1 % я считаю смехотворной. При этом «красные» первыми выпустили более современную платформу, поддерживающую и PCI Express 4.0, и более гибкие возможности разгона.

К сожалению, даже в апреле Ryzen 9 5900X находится в дефиците. На момент написания статьи в продаже я нашел только четыре предложения в Москве по цене от 57 до 78 тысяч рублей. Напомню, что Ryzen 9 5900X должен стоить в районе 45 тысяч рублей. Так что пока в максимальной сборке AMD используется Ryzen 7 5800X.
