For beginners who still do not dare to independently “make” a PC for themselves, a detailed step-by-step guide on assembling the system unit has been published. It turns out that in “Computer of the Month” I tell you how to build a computer, and in the manual – how to do it.

⇡ # Starting assembly

An “entry ticket” to the world of modern PC games. The system will allow you to play all AAA projects in Full HD resolution, mainly with the graphics quality settings “Medium” and “High”. The system does not have a serious margin of safety (for the next 2-3 years), is replete with compromises, needs an upgrade, but it also costs significantly less than other configurations.

The starter, baseline, and (loosely) optimal builds can be grouped together under the title “Starter Category”. You can see very well that AMD and NVIDIA began their victorious march from the High-End segment, saturating the market with expensive high-performance devices. Because of this (it is quite obvious, however) there was just a gigantic difference in the level of performance between the systems in question. Of course, components of the middle and budget classes will certainly be presented on the market, but only next year.

Intel’s starting assembly has been exhausted. The presence of a system with a 4-core Core i3-9100F chip was, in fact, due to a single factor: a lower price against the background of the AMD configuration. At a certain time, the difference reached a decent amount (for a starting assembly), although both systems showed the same results in games. However, in November, the Core i3-9100F costs slightly less than the Ryzen 3 3100, and we will not be able to save significantly without losing gaming performance. It turns out that the outdated LGA1151-v2 platform simply has no place in the “Computer of the Month” – once again.

I already have a presentiment of how they complain in the comments about the lack of a 4-core Core i3-10100F along with some board based on the H410 Express chipset. However, let’s compare the prices and capabilities of the platform. A bundle “Core i3-9100F (with a cooler) + the cheapest motherboard on the H310 Express” will cost you 13,000 rubles in November. The set “Core i3-10100F + inexpensive cooler + cheapest H410 motherboard” costs 15,500 rubles, taking into account a slight rounding off. The funny thing is that, having overpaid 2,500 rubles, we still get an assembly without any prospects …

The fact is that from reliable sources it became known that motherboards based on the H410 Express and B460 Express logic sets will not receive support for Rocket Lake processors, which are scheduled for release in early 2021. It is already known that the 11th generation of Core chips will only include 6- and 8-core crystals. Therefore, if you buy an inexpensive H410 board now, you will not be able to use it with a processor over time. even class Core i5-11400 (the name is conditional), these devices will not be compatible at the device BIOS level. Only motherboards with H470 and Z490 Express chipsets will receive support for Rocket Lake, if we are talking about the segment of consumer computer equipment. Only inexpensive models with these chipsets now cost around 9,000 rubles – this is an unaffordable luxury for a starting assembly.

Of course, H410 Express boards support Core i7 and even Core i9 Comet Lake processors. Only, firstly, in my life I will not recommend such a bundle to our readers. We somehow came out with a comparative review of cheap H310 motherboards, and not all devices provided stable operation even for a relatively cold 6-core Core i5-8400. Secondly, chips of older generations of Intel do not get much cheaper over time. This is not an axiom, but right now some Core i7-9700F costs 27,000 rubles. Exactly a year ago, 23,500 rubles were asked for this chip.

AMD’s starter build has a future, though. It is officially known that motherboards based on B450 and X470 chipsets will receive support for Zen 3 chips – only for most devices this will happen in early 2021. If you want to somehow speed up this process, then it is better to immediately take motherboard on A520. In the starting assembly, a GIGABYTE B450M S2H class motherboard is recommended only because it is slightly higher quality than AMD A520 counterparts for the same price. Practice shows that the VRM of a board like the GIGABYTE B450M S2H is sufficient for stable operation of 6- and 8-core Zen chips in stock (read – without overclocking). In addition, Zen 3 processors have improved energy efficiency.

The rest of the components of the starting assembly have not changed. Since “Computer of the Month” is mainly focused on games, the main component in the system is still a video card. For a month now we have been talking about the GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER. The 4 GB version of the Radeon RX 5500 XT costs a little more – in this design it turns out to be no better than NVIDIA’s handiwork. The most unpleasant thing in this story is the absence of at least some worthy alternative. For example, a GeForce GTX 1650 costs an average of 2,000 rubles less – only such savings will reduce the performance in games by 30%! Some readers recommend looking towards models such as the Radeon RX 560 with 4GB VRAM. And I would – honestly – look there. Yes, only these accelerators have disappeared from sale. There is also a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, but it costs an average of 12,000 rubles. As you can see, if we talk exclusively about new video cards with a guarantee, then, in fact, we have no choice – and this is sad.

Important news: I have slightly changed the description of the base assembly. It’s time to admit that 6GB VRAM graphics cards are making their last days. Early next year, they will be replaced by gaming accelerators with more video memory and noticeably faster GPUs. Largely because of this, the decision was made in November to use the more affordable GeForce GTX 1660 in the assembly. On average, this video card costs 3,000 rubles less than the GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER modification, and is only 7% slower.

A good alternative to the GeForce GTX 1660 is the 8GB version of the Radeon RX 5500 XT, which costs an average of 1,500 rubles less. This video card turns out to be 5-7% slower, but it has an “airbag” in the form of 8 GB VRAM. There are already games where this amount of memory helps out. Well, the balance of power between the GeForce GTX 1660 (SUPER / Ti) and the Radeon RX 5500 XT has been known for a long time – in this case it is not very difficult to decide on a video card.

The quad-core Core i3-10100F, which I spoke about earlier, eventually “settled” in the base assembly. This chip differs from the Core i3-10100 model only by the absence (more precisely, by blocking) an integrated graphics core. And yet the Intel system is cheaper for the same performance.

As you can see, a motherboard based on the H470 Express chipset is recommended in the starting assembly – over time, you will be able to install a solid 6-core processor instead of Core i3-10100F. Intel is now not in a position to inflate prices, and therefore the cost of the conditional Core i5-11100 (F) will probably be equal or even lower than the price of the Core i5-10400 (F). Meanwhile, Rocket Lake will improve performance well – this is already a fact, because the Cypress Cove microarchitecture, based on the Sunny Cove cores used in Ice Lake mobile processors, already provides an 18% increase in IPC compared to Skylake cores. It turns out that replacing the Core i3-10100F with the Core i5-10400F will make the assembly much faster. Here, and GeForce GTX 1660 can be safely replaced with something of the level of GeForce RTX 3070 or Radeon RX 6800. Old PC parts will be sold at a flea market, and new ones will be bought at minimal cost.

The situation is similar with the AMD-based assembly. Moving from Ryzen 5 3500X to at least Ryzen 5 5600X will give a tangible performance boost – especially in games after upgrading to a GeForce RTX 3070-level graphics card.

I have repeatedly drawn your attention to the fact that the DDR4-2666 and DDR4-3200 memory kits have a commensurate price. Therefore, even in the Intel assembly, it makes sense to immediately take modules operating at an effective frequency of 3000+ MHz. Yes, a motherboard based on the H470 chipset will only allow you to set the DDR4-2666 mode, but you can always slightly lower the memory timings – you will additionally speed up your PC. I wrote more about this in the article “Computer of the Month. Special issue: assembling the optimal gaming PC worth up to 100 thousand rubles (autumn-winter 2020). ” Now, given the potential upgrade of Intel’s assembly to Rocket Lake processors, the motivation to take a high-frequency set of RAM has increased even more, because it has officially become known that the 11th generation Core chips will receive a DDR4-3200 controller. By changing the chip in the base assembly, you simply activate the XMP profile of the existing RAM set. The beauty!

Of course, you can do even easier and take a motherboard based on the Z490 Express chipset for building Intel. The problem (is it a problem?) Is that more or less tolerable devices cost from 12,000 rubles.

The brand new Zen 3, by the way, also received a DDR4-3200 controller. We know that future mainstream AMD and Intel platforms will receive support for DDR5 memory. It turns out that the DDR4 era will end at a relatively low frequency for this type of RAM, because there are kits on sale that operate at an effective frequency of 4000+ MHz. True, it will not work to call such modules running and affordable.

⇡ # Optimal assembly

A system that is capable of running a particular game in most cases at maximum graphics quality settings in Full HD and WQHD resolutions.

As you can see, the optimal AMD assembly (with Intel, at least until March 2021) is officially based on the outdated generation of processors. However, with the release of the first Ryzen 5000 chips, the “red” ones make it clear that the “stones” of Zen 2 will be considered relevant for a long time. Officially, the price of the younger Vermeer – Ryzen 5 5600X – is 25,000 rubles for OEM and 27,500 rubles for the BOX version. As you can see, the difference in price is quite large, but it is quite possible that at first it will be even greater.

Now we see the following picture: my favorite Ryzen 5 3600 costs 18,500 rubles in Ikskom, taking into account a slight rounding off; for Ryzen 5 3600X they ask for 500 rubles more, and for the XT version of this 6-core – 24,000 rubles. Hopefully, with the release of the Ryzen 5 5600X, prices for 6- and 8-core Zen 2 chips will slide down.

Of course, if you can afford to buy the Ryzen 5 5600X right now, then I would suggest taking this opportunity. But to implement all its functions, you will need to buy a motherboard based on the B550 chipset, and this will further increase the assembly cost.

Intel’s optimal build has barely changed. Taking into account the cost of the Core i5-10400F here and now, it looks preferable to the AMD system, since the 6-core Intel, even with DDR4-2666 memory, is slightly faster than the Ryzen 5 3600. The value is not critical, but the price difference between these chips is currently greater 3,000 rubles. So here it is quite difficult to decide on the final choice, if you are not an adherent of any camp, because both assemblies can be effectively upgraded over time by installing, for example, 8-core “stones” Vermeer and Rocket Lake, respectively.

In the last release, I took and “installed” the GeForce RTX 3070 in the optimal assembly. Well, as I installed it … The graphics accelerator was not officially released, but we already knew that it would really offer performance at the level of the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with a much lower recommended price. The only problem is that in fact all NVIDIA new products are in great shortage. With a recommended price of 45,500 rubles, stores (including Ikskom) sold the novelty for 55-65 thousand rubles. I found in a couple of places a non-reference Inno3D for 50 thousand, but it was very quickly taken apart. The Founders Edition versions were quickly sold out – the first batch was literally swept away at the start of sales. In such a situation, it only remains to monitor the offers of various stores (in the comments to our articles, the lucky ones are already noted who managed to buy new items at more or less reasonable prices) – and if it suits you, then you need to act.

It so happened that AMD and NVIDIA started their pursuit of users’ wallets from the High-End segment. This inevitably led to a gap in performance between the top-end hardware and devices of the classes below. The optimal assembly in this regard “suffered” the most, because after the release of the GeForce RTX 3070, it makes no sense to take adapters such as the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, 2070 SUPER and 2060 SUPER, as well as analogues from AMD. I believe that I am doing the right thing by recommending waiting for new products at adequate prices, and not biting your elbows later. But if someone is against, then you can safely take the GeForce RTX 2060 into the optimal assembly. Only I warn you: due to the small amount of memory, this video card will turn into a pumpkin next year.

GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER, by the way, disappeared from sale. At the time of this writing, only one model was available at Ikskom at a price of 42,500 rubles. A similar situation is observed with the Radeon RX 5700. So we have little choice: either to catch the GeForce RTX 3070 on sale at a normal price, or to wait for the appearance of the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, which will be presented in the second half of November.

Configurations that can in most cases run a particular game at maximum graphics quality settings in WQHD resolution and at high graphics quality in Ultra HD (or you will need to manually select parameters such as anti-aliasing, shadows and textures).

GeForce RTX 3070 can be bought at Ikskom. At the time of this writing, there were four models on sale at a price of 59 to 64 thousand rubles. Naturally, you don’t need to buy this video card for this amount. That’s how much the GeForce RTX 3080 should cost – period!

The GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition review was released on our website. And a few days ago the article “Computer of the Month. Special issue: testing the build with the GeForce RTX 3070 and comparing it with the gaming systems of yesteryear, “in which I clearly showed how the new NVIDIA has changed the level of performance of the advanced build. True, one test bench was used in testing, which was based on an 8-core Core i7-10700F. I believe a build with Ryzen 5 5600X will show similar results, but we will definitely check this in the future.

According to our data, the first batch of Zen 3 chips will be on sale towards the end of the month, although here, too, most likely, it will not do without a deficit and overpriced. The official price of Ryzen 5 5600X is 25,000 and 27,500 rubles for the versions in OEM and BOX configurations. I indicated in table babouta higher price, expecting the worst. За Ryzen 7 5800X «красные» просят 37 500 и 41 000 рублей соответственно. Как видите, разница в цене между 6- и 8-ядерником оказывается очень и очень существенной — больше 12 000 рублей! Складывается ощущение, что между Ryzen 5 5600X и Ryzen 7 5800X со временем должен вклиниться еще какой-то чип AMD. Однако не секрет, что «красные» и его технический партнер столкнулись с нехваткой производственных мощностей. Во многом именно эта проблема привела к выходу в продажу всего трех версий Ryzen 5000.

К сожалению, на нашем сайте еще не вышли обзоры 6- и 8-ядерной моделей, однако мы сделаем это сразу же как только процессоры появятся в тестовой лаборатории. Однако даже без личного знакомства понятно, что Ryzen 5 5600X и Ryzen 7 5800X окажутся заметно быстрее своих предшественников в играх. Именно поэтому в игровой ПК стоит взять Ryzen 5 5600X, а не любой из Ryzen 3000. Про это я расскажу в рамках обзора максимальной сборки.

Не стоит забывать, что в конце месяца в продажу поступят видеокарты Radeon RX 6000. Подробнее о них мы поговорим в следующем выпуске, но пока очевидно, что с GeForce RTX 3070 конкурировать будет Radeon RX 6800. По данным AMD, которые необходимо проверить самостоятельно, новинка «красных» обойдет и GeForce RTX 3070, и GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. Ускоритель оснащен 16 Гбайт набортной GDDR6-памяти, но и стоить будет на 80 долларов больше.

Итак, на нашем сайте вышел обзор процессоров Ryzen 9 5950X и Ryzen 9 5900X. Настоятельно рекомендую прочесть этот интереснейший материал. Да, «красные» смогли — и теперь чипы Zen 3 выступают на равных с платформой LGA1200 в играх. В ресурсоемких приложениях отрыв решений AMD еще сильнее увеличился. Я просто процитирую своего коллегу Илью Гавриченкова: «Изменение структуры CCX — это именно то, чего ой как недоставало процессорам Ryzen на протяжении первых трех поколений. Именно из-за этого их игровая производительность и вызывала постоянные нарекания. Теперь же проблема исправлена, причём настолько успешно, что кадровая частота в разрешении Full HD при переходе от Zen 2 к Zen 3 подскочила сразу на 25-30 %. И это сразу выводит процессоры Ryzen 5000 в положение безусловно подходящих для игровых систем.» Но давайте разберем всё подробно.

Официальная рекомендованная цена Ryzen 7 5800X в России составляет 41 000 и 37 500 рублей за BOX- и OEM-комплектацию. За Ryzen 9 5900X будут просить 50 000 и 45 500 рублей соответственно, за Ryzen 9 5950X — 74 000/68 500 рублей. Наши тесты показали, что среднее преимущество носителей архитектуры Zen 3 над Zen 2 составляет около 13 %, и это — неплохая разница с учетом того, сколько стоят представители Zen разных поколений. Так, рекомендованная цена Ryzen 9 5900X всего на 3 500 рублей превышает реальную цену Ryzen 9 3900X. А вот рекомендованная цена Ryzen 7 5800X превышает реальную цену Ryzen 7 3800X на 6 000 рублей, и на 10 000 рублей — Ryzen 7 3700X. Как видите, чем меньше у процессора ядер, тем хуже он смотрится в системе координат «Цена — производительность», когда речь заходит о ресурсоемких приложениях, таких как рендеринг, обработка фото, работа с видео и данными. Так что, уважаемые читатели, владельцам Ryzen 7 3700X бежать впопыхах за новым Ryzen 7 5800X лично я не вижу смысла.

Но вот в играх новые Zen 3 смотрятся просто великолепно. Про серьезное опережение чипов AMD предыдущего поколения я уже рассказал. Интересно, что по минимальному FPS тот же Ryzen 9 5900X опередил Core i9-10900K в четырех случаях из 12. В стенде использовалась GeForce RTX 3080, а речь идет про разрешение Full HD. В двух играх заметно быстрее оказался 10-ядерник Intel. В остальных же ААА-проектах между платформами AM4 и LGA1200 смело можно поставить знак равенства. Равны системы и в разрешении Ultra HD, которое рекомендуется для максимальной сборки.

Важно понять, что массовые платформы AMD, о которых идет речь в статье, практически не будут развиваться. Чипы на микроархитектуре Zen 3 станут последними для платформы AM4, ничего принципиально лучшего уже не появится в продаже, а микроархитектура Zen 4 ознаменует переход на новый техпроцесс, новую платформу и новый стандарт памяти. Это же касается и максимальной сборки Intel. Дело в том, что появившиеся чипы Rocket Lake будут иметь максимум 8 ядер и 16 потоков. Да, они дадут заметный прирост в играх, но менять 10-ядерный Core i9-10850K (на нашем сайте вышел подробный обзор этого чипа) на менее «ядреную» модель нет никакого смысла. Выходит, владельцы максимальной сборки Intel тоже достигли предела для своей платформы (в принципе, эти же слова актуальны и для продвинутой сборки Intel). Хорошенько подумайте об этом перед покупкой.

Если честно, я очень долго ломал голу над тем, как мне поступить с максимальной сборкой. Есть неоспоримый факт: AMD теперь минимум не хуже в играх, но заметно круче в вычислениях. Спрашивается, а зачем тогда нужна сборка Intel?

В общем, пока в максимальной сборке остается платформа LGA1200, но я буду пристально следить за ситуацией. Возможно, система Intel в ближайшее время элементарно станет дешевле, заметно дешевле, и такой ход оправдает покупку Core i9 и сопутствующих комплектующих.

Я ставлю в максимальную сборку AMD 12-ядерный Ryzen 9 5900X, но что-то мне подсказывает, что в ближайшие пару месяцев вряд ли кому-то удастся купить этот чип по адекватной цене в нашей стране. Впрочем, об этом и многом другом мы обязательно поговорим в следующем выпуске.
