For the first time a laptop with two screens was presented by ASUS more than a year and a half ago. A review of such a laptop was published on 3DNews – we are talking about the ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo UX581GV model. Following the flagship, a little over a year ago, a version of the ZenBook Duo UX481F appeared with a much more digestible cost, and at the beginning of this year the company released the next version of a dual-screen laptop, or rather an ultrabook, – ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482.

Compared to the UX481 model, the new UX482 received an 11th generation Tiger Lake processor, dramatically faster RAM and SSD storage, a more efficient graphics core (or discrete graphics card), as well as other optimizations aimed at improving the usability of ultrabook, including simultaneously with two displays.

Ultrabook ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482E comes in a black cardboard box with a plastic handle.

From the useful information on the box, we single out a sticker listing the hardware components of the ultrabook.

Inside the main package, another flat box is inserted between the soft corners, where the ultrabook is fixed.

On the side of it is an envelope case with orange stitching.

Also in the box you can find a stand for the ultrabook case and a power adapter with a built-in cable.

We add that this ultrabook model can also be equipped with the Asus Pen stylus, which was not in our version.

ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 is released in China and comes with a two-year warranty. The cost of the ultrabook in the configuration provided to us for testing, which you will see immediately next, is 175 thousand rubles.

⇡ #Design and ergonomics corps

The case of ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 is made in the color with the original name “Celestial Blue”, but the shades of the case have little in common with the blue. Rather, it is blue-gray with metallic sheen.

The ultrabook display panel and keyboard operation panel are made of lightweight and durable magnesium-aluminum alloy, and the base is made of plastic. The top cover features a silvery ASUS logo with concentric circles radiating from it. This solution looks very attractive, although it is not new for the company’s products.

On the base, we note a small ventilation grill, stickers and markings of the ultrabook.

The ultrabook measures 324.0 x 222.0 x 19.5 mm (16.9 mm without legs) and weighs 1583 grams. In working order, ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 looks very unusual in comparison with other mobile computers. So far, the solution with two displays is the exclusive prerogative of ASUS.

Out of the box, an information sticker with its key features is glued to the ultrabook case.

The body is supported by two long rubber-backed strips glued to the front and back of the base.

There is traditionally nothing on the front of the ultrabook, there is not even a notch for fingers to open the display.

However, the display edge protrudes slightly towards the base of the case, so it is convenient to open it without holding the base. By the way, the ErgoLift hinges now use a zinc alloy, thanks to which it was possible to make them 30% smaller while maintaining the same strength and reliability.

The opposite end of the case contains only two plastic stops on which the display rests upon opening.

Connectors and ports in ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482E are displayed only on the sides of the case.

On the left is the HDMI 1.4 video output and two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C ports of the Thunderbolt 4 interface (up to 40 Gb / s) with support for the Power Delivery function, and on the right is the USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A port (5 Gb / s), a combo connector for headphones and a microphone, a slot for microSD memory cards, as well as indicators of the charge and activity of drives.

We add here that the ultrabook has a certificate of compliance with the American military-industrial reliability standard MIL-STD-810H, and in addition to ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 passed a whole series of internal ASUS tests.

⇡ #Input Devices

In comparison with its predecessor, the keyboard of ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 has changed, in our opinion, not for the better.

We mean the up, down, left and right movement arrows reduced to 7 mm in height, which, moreover, are combined with PgUp and PgDn.

Otherwise, there are no changes. The dimensions of the main keys are 15.0 × 15.0 mm, the functional keys are 13.5 × 8.0 mm. Key travel – 1.4 mm. In our version of the ultrabook, there is only an English layout with three-level backlighting.

A small touchpad measuring 55 × 70 mm is located to the right of the keyboard and has two dedicated buttons. Despite its small size, it is convenient to work with it, and over time you even get used to its non-standard location.

The ultrabook power button is located in the upper right corner above the touchpad and is equipped with an LED indicator.

The Ultrabook’s camera is built into the center of the top display frame. Its resolution is 720p, and its activity is signaled by a small white LED. Supports Windows Hello (biometric face recognition), which works thanks to the built-in infrared sensor, even in the dark.

In terms of technical specifications, both displays in the ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 are almost unchanged compared to what we saw in the UX481. The main display is built on a 14-inch NanoEdge IPS-matrix with a Full HD resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels), a frequency of 60 Hz and a touch-sensitive coating. The side frames are 5.5 mm thick, the top one – 9.5 mm, the matrix occupies 93% of the panel area.

Stated at 100% sRGB (NTSC 72%) and 400 nits brightness. A small addition here are the Pantone Validated (factory accurate color calibration) and TÜV Rheinland (low blue) certifications.

The manufacturer of the matrix here is AU Optronics, and its marking is AUOA48F (exactly the same as that of the ASUS ExpertBook B9 B9400CEA we recently tested).

We tested the ultrabook display with the X-Rite i1 Display Pro calibrator and the Argyll CMS software with the DispcalGUI graphical interface. All measurements were taken without additional display calibration (factory settings only). Let’s see the results.

Judging by the DeltaE deviation results obtained, the display is really well calibrated at the factory: the maximum deviation was 2.58 units, and the average was 0.8 units altogether.

The color temperature of the main display of the Ultrabook is extremely close to the reference value of 6500 K.

The gamma curve runs in the range from 2.0 to 2.3, but in the interval from 30 to 70% it lies close to the nominal value of 2.2.

The deviations of color balance in the grayscale were recorded only in the range from 5 to 20%.

After calibration, the average level of deviations of the display matrix was only 0.08 units, and the maximum was 0.61 units. SRGB color space coverage – 105.9%.

In terms of maximum brightness, the ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482E display fell short of the 400 cd / m2 declared in the specifications2, but maximum 364 cd / m22 should be enough even on a sunny day. The minimum value turned out to be 19 cd / m22

At a brightness level of 200 cd / m22 there are no complaints about the uniformity of the display backlighting, except for two small sectors in the lower left corner.

Based on the measurement results, we can say that the main display here is exactly the same as in the expensive ASUS ExpertBook B9 B9400CEA, which is why our overall impression of it is extremely positive.

Recall that, as in many other ASUS ultrabooks, it provides the ability to adjust the color gamut of the display from the proprietary MyASUS application.

Moreover, in the case of the ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482, the color gamut can be changed individually for both the main display and the ScreenPad Plus panel.

By the way, the technical characteristics of this panel have not changed: we have an IPS-matrix with a diagonal of 12.65 inches and a resolution of 1920 × 515 pixels. Only higher brightness declared: 400 cd / m22 against the previous 300 cd / m22… There is support for the stylus with the ability to determine the pressure, but on ScreenPad Plus it is quite convenient to work with just your fingers.

The key difference between the updated ScreenPad Plus and the same display in the ZenBook Duo 14 UX481 is that when you open the ultrabook, the secondary display rises by 7 degrees, making it easier for the user to perceive the two screens as one.

The second important innovation is the specially designed Control Panel, which enhances the user experience when working with two screens. It is shown below in screenshots 4 through 7.

This panel is currently designed for Adobe programs: Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Lightroom and After Effects. For example, in Photoshop, you can increase the size of the brush with a large round regulator, while others can change its hardness and opacity, set the layer, and so on. It is convenient that the location of any tools on the additional panel and the purpose of their functions can be configured as you like – at the request of the user.

At the same time, the previously introduced features of the ScreenPad Plus menu are also preserved.

The possibilities of the second display can be used as much as you have enough imagination. For example, in addition to the banal calculator or the MyASUS utility, you can transfer individual tasks there when editing video / audio content, transfer diagnostic utilities or monitoring graphs to it during benchmarks, and if you get tired of everything at all, you can do handwriting, which, however, you can do and on the main touchpad screen.

In general, it seems to us that the possibilities of an ultrabook with ScreenPad Plus are truly endless, and all the spheres of its application are now even difficult to predetermine. But this is the plus of all ASUS ZenBook Duo, which have now become both more convenient and functional in this regard. In addition, the fact that the additional display is raised above the board made it possible to increase the efficiency of the ultrabook cooling system, which we will discuss in the following sections of today’s material.

⇡ #Internal structure and accessories

Reduced by 3 mm thickness of the ultrabook case, reduced by 50 grams in weight, more comfortable and bright ScreenPad Plus, as well as slightly different ports – all these changes, perhaps, so far hardly justify the appearance of the new ASUS ZenBook Duo 14, and this remarks are quite fair as all the major changes to the Ultrabook are inside the case. First of all, let’s note the changes in the layout of the board and components on it. The cooling system has shifted from the center to the left side and retained only one 10 mm heat pipe.

At the same time, the battery with stereo speakers and antennas of the wireless communication module did not undergo any outward changes (as further testing will show, their characteristics have not changed either).

We give a brief summary of the hardware configuration of the ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482EA ultrabook below, and then we will analyze each component separately.

The motherboard of the ultrabook is based on the Intel Tiger Lake system logic set, and the latest BIOS version 206 available at the time of testing is dated December 12, 2020.

The first major change is, of course, the central processing unit. The ultrabook now uses energy-efficient 11th generation Tiger Lake-U processors instead of Intel Core i7-10510U family Kaby Lake-U: Intel Core i5-1135G7 or Intel Core i7-1165G7… In our version of the ultrabook, just the second, most productive version is installed.

This processor model has the L3 cache size of 12 MB, the turbo frequency can reach 4.7 GHz, and the thermal package should not exceed 28 watts.

The next important change is the type of RAM. Instead of the previous LPDDR3 with an effective frequency of 2133 MHz and timings of 16-20-20-45 CR1, the ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482EA has LPDDR4X memory with an effective frequency 4266 MHz and timings 36-39-39-97 CR1.

The amount of memory in an ultrabook can be equal to 8, 16 or 32 GB – and it is impossible to change it, since the chips are soldered on the motherboard.

Judging by the tests, the memory bandwidth in the ultrabook has more than doubled, and this more than compensates for the 7% increase in latency. Our only recommendation in this case is to take the version with 32 GB of RAM.

The third change affected the graphics core. Certain versions of the ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 can be equipped with a discrete NVIDIA GeForce MX450 2GB graphics card, but our configuration only has an integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics in the central processor versus the former Intel UHD Graphics 620.

And this, as it seems to us, is the best option for such an ultrabook, since NVIDIA GeForce MX450 does not bring a serious performance increase, and in general, the level of this video card does not allow playing modern 3D games at a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. So for now, for ZenBook Duo 14, the new Intel Iris Xe graphics are our everything.

The fourth change affected the drive. And although its type with the interface remained the same (M.2 2280 and NVMe 3.0 x4), the ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 has a very fast Samsung PM981a SSD (MZVLB1T0HBLR-00000) with a volume of 1 TB.

According to the test results, it demonstrates very high speed indicators both when operating the ultrabook from the mains, and in stand-alone mode from the battery.

The maximum temperature of the SSD in the stress test did not exceed 53 degrees Celsius, which is a very good result for a compact ultrabook.

But the wireless module in the new ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 has not changed, it also uses Intel AX201D2W with support for Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), MIMO 2 × 2 and the ability to work at 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz ( 160 MHz).

The antennas of the wireless module are located at the front of the ultrabook case. At the software level, the ASUS WiFi Master technology is implemented, which includes WiFi SmartConnect and WiFi Stabilizer functions.

The Realtek ALC3288 chip was chosen as the audio processor.

The active interaction of ASUS engineers with the specialists of Harman Kardon made it possible to achieve an extremely clean and powerful signal output through two stereo speakers built into the base and side sections of the case.

We add that the MyASUS software package has a separate section for turning on noise canceling microphones and filtering the output through acoustics of all sounds, except for the human voice.

The latter function can be useful for participating in online conferences and briefings.

⇡ #Cooling system, efficiency and noise level

The ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482, unlike the UX481, uses a cooling system called the Active Aerodynamic System (AAS +), which was previously used in ASUS ROG gaming laptops. Теперь из-за того, что дополнительный экран приподнимается на 7 градусов, воздух в вентиляторы кулера поступает не снизу, через вентиляционную решётку, а через щели по бокам, в результате чего объём воздушного потока увеличился сразу на 49%. Это позволяет охлаждать процессор более эффективно при меньшем уровне шума (заявлен 40%-й рост эффективности).

Помимо этого, в каждом вентиляторе кулера количество лопастей увеличено с 43 до 59 штук (сразу на 37 %). Одна тепловая трубка диаметром 10 мм переносит тепло от процессора и дискретной видеокарты (в нашей версии отдельного GPU в ноутбуке нет).

Что касается режимов работы ультрабука и его системы охлаждения, то их по-прежнему три, а активируются они в приложении MyASUS.

Для оценки эффективности охлаждения центрального процессора в ультрабуке мы использовали утилиту powerMAX (в режиме AVX), а параметры мониторинга считывала и отображала HWiNFO64. Тестирование проводилось при температуре в помещении около 25 градусов Цельсия под управлением операционной системы Windows 10 Pro x64 с установкой последних доступных драйверов и обновлений.

Первые три цикла стресс-теста центрального процессора ультрабука ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 мы провели при его работе от адаптера питания и электросети, получив следующие результаты.

Balanced (2,6 ГГц, 72°C, 22 Вт)

Silent (1,3 ГГц, 51°C, 12 Вт)

В максимально производительном режиме частота процессора ультрабука кратковременно поднимается до 4,7 ГГц одновременно со скачком температуры до 94 градусов Цельсия, но затем стабилизируется сначала на 3,1 ГГц, а через 5-6 минут стрессовой нагрузки – на 2,9 ГГц, с температурой около 80 градусов Цельсия и TDP 28 ватт. Вентиляторы системы охлаждения в этом режиме отчётливо слышны, однако звук их работы не доставляет серьёзного дискомфорта. Сбалансированный режим стабилизирует процессор на 2,6 ГГц при 72 градусах Цельсия и TDP 22 Вт, а система охлаждения едва заметна по уровню шума. Наконец в режиме с говорящим названием Silent ультрабук работает бесшумно, но лишь на 1,3 ГГц при TDP 12 Вт.

Теперь такие же тесты, но при отключении от адаптера питания и электросети.

Удивительно, но при работе только от аккумулятора (при его практически полном заряде) ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 не только не теряет в производительности, но и слегка ускоряется в сбалансированном и тихом режимах при повышении средних температур на 5 и 4 градуса Цельсия. А вот в самом производительном режиме процессор ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 практически не изменился по частоте и температурам.

⇡#Тестирование производительности

Изначально мы планировали протестировать ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 в режиме максимальной производительности при подключении к электросети и в таком же режиме, но при питании от встроенного аккумулятора. Однако идентичные результаты тестов показали бесполезность этой затеи. Поэтому было решено оценить производительность ультрабука в режимах Performance и Balanced.

Как видим, в тех тестах, где были протестированы оба ультрабука, новая модель с процессором семейства Tiger Lake-U уходит в заметный отрыв.


Все версии ультрабуков ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 комплектуются адаптером питания модели AD2129320 мощностью 65 Вт (20,0 В, 3,25 А) и массой 215 граммов, c вмонтированным кабелем USB Type-C длиной 1,57 м.

В характеристиках ультрабука указано, что такой адаптер заряжает литий-ионный аккумулятор ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 ёмкостью 70 Вт·ч с 0 до 60 % за 49 минут.

И действительно, на уровень 60 % ультрабук выходит довольно быстро, а вот время полного заряда аккумулятора — с 3 до 99 % — составляет 1 час 58 минут (усреднённый показатель за четыре полных цикла заряда). При этом модель ASUS ZenBook Duo UX481F с аккумулятором такой же ёмкости и таким же адаптером питания заряжалась на 40 минут дольше.

Напомним, что в MyASUS есть три режима заряда аккумулятора: до полной ёмкости, сбалансированный (рекомендуемый) и режим максимального срока службы.

Первый пакет тестов автономности ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 мы провели при яркости основного дисплея на уровне 200 кд/м2 (75% по шкале) и отключенном дисплее ScreenPad Plus. Тестирование проводилось с помощью пакета PCMark’10 в режимах Modern Office, Applications, Gaming и Video. Сетевые соединения и звук не отключались. Результаты нас очень даже впечатлили: до 17 часов в повседневной работе, до 12 часов при просмотре полноэкранного видео и более трёх часов в условном игровом режиме.

Если же провести те же самые тесты при включенном ScreenPad Plus, что в контексте целевого использования ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 является более актуальным, то время автономной работы в Modern Office сокращается на 1 час и 23 минуты, в Applications – на 2 часа и 5 минут, а в Gaming результат не изменился, всё те же три часа с третью. В режиме воспроизведения видео второй экран не нужен, поэтому такой тест с активированным ScreenPad Plus мы не повторяли. Результаты в любом случае превосходные, автономность ультрабука находится на очень высоком уровне.


За внешним сходством ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 со своим предшественником скрывается глубокая модернизация ультрабука как по эргономичности и удобству использования, так и по аппаратной составляющей. Фактически не изменился только основной дисплей, а всё остальное разработчики старались улучшить, что им удалось практически полностью, за исключением зачем-то уменьшенных стрелок на клавиатуре и камеры с разрешением 720p. К эргономическим оптимизациям мы отнесём уменьшенную на 3 мм толщину корпуса ультрабука, слегка сниженную массу, более удобный в эксплуатации дисплей ScreenPad Plus с повышенной яркостью и контрольной панелью для продуктов Adobe.

Изменения в аппаратной составляющей заслуживают отдельного абзаца. Здесь в первую очередь следует отметить более производительный процессор Tiger Lake-U с интегрированной графикой Intel Iris Xe, самую быструю (для ультрабуков) оперативную память LPDDR4X 4266 МГц, терабайтный SSD с исчерпывающими скоростными показателями, а также беспроводной сетевой адаптер с поддержкой Wi-Fi 6 и звук с сертификацией Harman Kardon. Переработанная система охлаждения, у которой благодаря подъёму ScreenPad Plus буквально открылось второе дыхание, справляется с охлаждением процессора без чрезмерного шума. Особо отметим, что ультрабук не теряет в производительности при работе от аккумулятора, как это происходит с большинством других моделей.

На высоте у ASUS ZenBook Duo 14 UX482 и такой важный для ультрабуков показатель, как автономность. Полного заряда аккумулятора хватит на 10 часов одновременной работы с двумя дисплеями-тачскринами, активированной сетью и звуком, а только с основным дисплеем этот миниатюрный и одновременно производительный компьютер способен проработать более 17 часов! В общем, получилась безусловно интересная, компактная и долгоиграющая машинка. Жаль только, что стоит она пока многовато.
