Demon’s Souls – a soul return. Review / Games

Played on PC

Fans of the original Demon’s Souls, as well as those who missed it at one time, have long dreamed of releasing an updated version. And for good reason – the game was a holistic, mysterious and exciting adventure, imbued with the excitement of facing the unknown and overcoming severe trials. And, of course, it was she who gave birth to a whole genre trend, now known to everyone as souls-like. At the same time, a lot was required from the authors of the remake: to preserve that unusually finely built atmosphere, to observe stylistic continuity, to slightly adjust the old game elements and not to make an accidental gag. It looks like we succeeded …

⇡ #With all my heart

At its core, the mood and atmosphere of Demon’s Souls have hardly changed. The dark story of the campaign against the ancient demon Elder and the feasible salvation of Boletaria, suffering from the invasion of terrifying monsters, is still mesmerizing and tightly chained to the gamepad. The game is still filled with mysterious narrative, unusual characters, grotesque creatures and, of course, non-obvious, but insanely entertaining mechanics. The levels from the original are recognizable and atmospheric, only transformed towards modern graphic standards. And they began to visually overlap slightly with Dark Souls III …

How marvelous now look the stately Gothic buildings of the palace complex of Boletaria, the red-hot lava tunnels of the Stonefang and the mysterious heights of the tower of Latria. Even the Nexus, the mainstay of the journey, shone with pretty redesigned and prettier lighting. As well as some of the night scenes of the “classics”, which are now illuminated by the mean sun of Boletaria with all the scattering, particles and reflections relying on. It seems that this ray tracing is trying, but in reality the game does not support this technology – all by ourselves, all by ourselves.

The network component is back in its original form. If you want - invade the worlds of other players, if you want - help to defeat bosses and difficult game areas

Naturally, the changes also affected the design of the enemies. Ordinary opponents retained their recognizable features, but began to look in places more menacing, sometimes a little more aesthetically pleasing (we, of course, compare with the original PS3 game), and sometimes, unexpectedly, resemble demons from DOOM or Diablo. Especially the fiery eavesdropper, which prompted the desire to prepare the BFG for battle, not the halberd.

By the way, fighting the rulers of locations is still interesting and tense, although only a couple of them will make you noticeably sweat. Since all the special conditions for victory have migrated from the original source, hardened demon slayers will easily remember which boss where and how to stab, chop, pound. Well, for those who first discover Demon’s Souls, one of the most exciting mechanics of the game – the selection of the “key” to overthrow the boss – will reveal itself in all the splendor of a deadly rebus.

Where is it without Patchwork with his dubious proposals …

And, of course, recognizable (not only by those who played the “classic” Demon’s Souls) class system offers fundamentally different approaches to the passage. You can skillfully cast for a magician or know (the official name of the class in the localization), but be extremely vulnerable to physical damage; You can put on the heavy armor of a templar or a knight, but dexterous dodges in this case will not suit your face – not like a skillful thief, who, however, will suffer in clashes with a group of opponents.

In a word, everything was as it was, only with cosmetic improvements. But what really original brought the remake of Demon’s Souls is the tactile relationship with the world of Boletaria …

Our recent PS5 review touched on the nuances of playing on Sony’s latest gamepad, including Demon’s Souls. But during the time of detailed communication with the game, the impressions of tactile delights have expanded significantly. DualSense really adds an extra layer of immersion to the game world, delivering a kinesthetic return on … perhaps everything.

Vibration motors, coupled with a built-in speaker, manage to reproduce a vast palette of tactile impressions, and they turn out demonically convincing. For example, enemy attacks on the shield respond with a short, sharp and “dull” vibration of the gamepad and the corresponding sound. Quite differently, a crossbow bolt hits the same shield. And if the enemy struck from the right, then the right side of DualSense will give an increased impulse. And, of course, the spectacular animation that accompanies a retaliatory attack after a successful parry or a stab in the back will also be complemented by a clang of steel and a vibration comparable to crushing attacks on the enemy. Other activities of the hero are accompanied in a similar way: the process of absorbing demonic souls, poisoning or burning in lava …

An interesting pattern: the larger the boss in Demon's Souls, the easier it is to defeat him

I was also struck by the reaction of DualSense to the environment and elements of the world. The ominous beating of a giant heart, the roar of a dragon god, powerful air currents or an iron elevator chain – all strong sound waves and pulsations of locations fall directly into the player’s hands, both through the gamepad speaker and through various vibration algorithms. The effect is amazing – it’s a pity that the same recoil was not attached to the triggers of the gamepad (only in pulling the bowstring I felt a slight resistance). On the other hand, how long would they last with such intensive exploitation?

It is a common misconception that mastery in the Souls game lies in some kind of prohibitive dexterity of fingers and insane speed of reaction. Not without this, of course, but still the key to success is knowledge

⇡ #Do not bend your soul

Tactile impressions are, of course, good. But there was in this barrel of demonic-spiritual honey and a place for a spoonful of context tar. Behind the flashiness of cosmetic improvements and kinesthetic sensations, at some point you realize that the very core of the game is completely devoid of something fresh and does not give new emotions as a work of art. The mechanics have already been studied far and wide from Souls games and their imitators, battles with enemies and bosses after Bloodborne or Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice seem too slow and simple, and the charge of nostalgia is exhausted after the first playthrough.

Someone has definitely not heard about weight categories

Someone has definitely not heard about weight categories

This is the minus – if not games, but situations. The Demon’s Souls remake is a great piece, but not one worth buying a PS5 for. Perhaps the very idea of releasing an updated version as the key and practically the only true exclusive at the start of the console is not very successful. It is unlikely that for a project that completely repeats the patterns of the game already eleven years ago, it is worth giving about forty (or even one hundred) thousand rubles, taking into account the purchase of a new console. Rather, you should wait for discounts, the appearance of other exclusives, or (well, what if!) Release on other platforms. But if you are already the proud owner of a new product from Sony, then welcome to Boletaria!

Advantages:

  • accurately recreated and carefully transferred original canvas;
  • incredible tactile feedback provided by the DualSense gamepad;
  • atmospheric locations.

Disadvantages:

  • in the “image quality” mode, the frame rate is sometimes too low;
  • in the game bugs, freezes and crashes occasionally slip;
  • the cost is too high at the moment.

Graphic arts

The visual part of Demon’s Souls has been reworked conscientiously – while maintaining the recognizability of the scenery, the developers of the remake added appropriate visual delights and skillfully conveyed the mood of the “classic”.

Sound

The sound design is perfectly executed: every noise, clank or rumble is in its place, and, on occasion, flies out of the gamepad with the appropriate tactile palette. Wonderful choral and instrumental compositions suitably complement the atmospheric world of the game.

Single player game

A moderately difficult, colorful and incredibly exciting adventure for everyone who wanted to join the real classics of the genre.

Collective game

Non-linear multiplayer in a recognizable variety: leave clues, invade other players’ worlds, ask for help, or answer the call yourself.

General impression

Maybe the remake of Demon’s Souls is not the exclusive one for which it is worth running headlong after the newest Sony console, but the game is excellent and sincere – it’s a fact!
