And more recently, a review of the GeForce RTX 3070 TUF Gaming OC video card was released on our website. ASUS would not be itself if it had not presented several versions of the GeForce RTX 3070 at once. The ROG STRIX series is traditionally considered elite and prestigious – by the way, you can even find a white version of this video card on sale. And a model with “OS” in the name came to our laboratory – and indeed, the video card has a decent factory overclocked graphics processor.

The video card comes in a beautiful cardboard box. Inside, in addition to the device itself and all the waste paper, I found a couple of Velcro ties – they will come in handy for more neat laying of cables in the case. And the set should also include a proprietary ROG line made of a piece of PCB. But, apparently, someone … tested it before us.

The maximum length of the ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3070 OC is 319 mm. The device is large and the manufacturer claims the cooler uses a 2.9-slot form factor. In fact, the adapter will occupy three expansion slots in the case.

In terms of design, the ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3070 OC, in my opinion, looks more interesting than the GeForce RTX 3070 TUF Gaming OC. A large plate with the inscription “GEFORCE RTX” is a screen that hides the wire from the backlight. The RGB LEDs themselves are located along the entire edge of the video card. When they work, they sort of tint the rotating fans at the same time. However, I suggest you look at the illumination of the hero of today’s review for yourself.

Naturally, the manufacturer equips the user with all the necessary tools for setting (backlighting) a video card. On-board RGB lighting can be customized and synchronized with the lighting of other ASUS components using the Armory Crate App.

The fans themselves – there are three of them here – have different shapes and rotate in different directions. Thus, the cooler uses three 95 mm Axial-tech impellers. The extreme “carlsons” received 11 blades each and rotate counterclockwise. The middle fan with 13 blades spins clockwise. The direction of rotation of the central fan, opposite to the direction of rotation of the side impellers, reduces turbulence and, as a result, increases the air flow.

The fans have a special blade shape with a rim that unites them. The closed rings have cutouts that help diffuse air flow over a larger area of ​​the radiator. According to the manufacturer, this form of “Carlsons” allows you to increase the air flow and reduce noise at high speeds. It also significantly increases the rigidity of the plastic “petals”.

The reverse side of the PCB is almost completely covered by a massive metal plate. We see that the ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3070 OC cooler turns out to be longer than its PCB. It turns out that part of the air flow will be directed upwards – towards the upper wall of the Tower-case. This is done so that the heated air leaves the housing more efficiently and does not “get stuck” in the radiator section.

The backplate is also part of the cooling system – in the photo above you can see that the back plate is in contact with the elements of the video card using thermal pads.

On the I / O panel, there was a place for three DisplayPorts and two HDMI ports at once. The grill through which the heated air is blown out is small.

The ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3070 OC cooler is quite easy to disassemble, but you will need not only a Phillips screwdriver, but also a hexagonal bit. And then everything is simple: we remove the backplate, dismantle the metal frame (it not only increases the rigidity of the structure, but also cools part of the phases of the power converter) and remove the radiator directly.

The large nickel-plated copper plate, according to ASUS, is produced using a special MaxContact technology. With her help “the surface is as smooth as possible at the microscopic level, the heatsink contact area is flawlessly flat, which contributes to improved heat dissipation from the GPU“. In this case, the base of the cooler is in contact not only with the GPU, but also with the memory chips.

The same radiator has a sole plate for heat dissipation from the elements of the VRM circuit. In total, there are seven nickel-plated copper heat pipes of various lengths and shapes.

Among the additional elements, I note the presence of a video card on the side of the switch. By default, the P Mode (Performance) preset is activated, however you can use the Q Mode (Quiet). Enabling quiet mode makes the video card a little hotter, but much quieter. At the same time, Q Mode has practically no effect on system performance – proofs are given in the second part of the article.

On the back, on the PCB, there are two four-pin connectors for connecting fans. They can be connected to housing impellers, fixed on the front panel. First, it increases the number of useful connectors. Secondly, the rotational speed of case coolers can be tied to the temperature readings of the video card.

As always, the printed circuit board with all the components soldered on it is made without human intervention. Auto-Extreme technology improves the build quality of the device and reduces the likelihood of scrap.

12 phases are responsible for powering the GA104 GPU. Here, Texas Instruments CSD95481RWJ assemblies are used, each of which can withstand a load of 60 A. They are controlled by the Monolithic Power Systems MP2888A PWM controller. The eight Samsung K4Z80325BC-HC14 chips are powered by two phases based on the ON Semiconductor NCP303151 power stages (50 A) and the uPI Semiconductor uP9512Q controller.

The graphics cards were loaded using the game The Witcher III: Wild Hunt (maximum graphics quality settings, 4K resolution) for two hours. Tester performance was measured by 3DMark Time Spy, 3DMark Fire Strike and Unigine Superposition benchmarks.

The room temperature at the time of testing was 22 degrees Celsius.

The noise level was measured using a Mastech MS6708 device installed opposite the video card at a distance of 15 cm.

Gaming performance was measured using the well-known MSI Afterburner software. It allows you to get the render time of each frame. The use of the 99th percentile instead of the indicators of the minimum number of frames per second is due to the desire to clear the results of random spikes in performance that were provoked by reasons not directly related to the operation of the main components of the platform.

The cooler of the video card works in a semi-passive mode, that is, the fans spin up only at the moment when the temperature of the graphics core reaches 55 degrees Celsius. The impellers start rotation smoothly – without a sharp and unpleasant increase in the noise level.

As I said, the nominal operating mode is P Mode. I wonder how many buyers of ASUS video cards are going to “stick” into this slider? It’s just that I have already tested three ASUS models, and in all cases the adapter, as for me, works fine in the default mode. Yes, ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3070 OC can be heard, but name the video card loudI cant. And in a good case, it certainly won’t be the noisiest component in a system.

Enabling the Q-mode makes the device virtually silent. In this case, the GPU still does not heat up above 70 degrees Celsius. Cool ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3070 OC and power converter. The card is cold in all operating modes – that’s a fact.

Interestingly, spinning the Axial-tech impellers to the maximum frequency did not lead to a significant decrease in the GPU temperature. This means that the radiator of the cooler is well ventilated even at significantly lower rpm of the complete “carlsons”.

Finally, it should be noted that the ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3070 OC was practically squeezed out of the entire maximum even at the factory. I managed to make a video card fasterby only 6%. In this operating mode, it does not get very hot, but it becomes noticeably noisier. Personally, I do not see the point in such overclocking, but you decide for yourself.

⇡ # Performance in games

When the GeForce RTX 3070 was first introduced, NVIDIA’s new product clearly interested many PC gamers. Still, after all, roughly speaking, we got an analogue of the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti at half the price. Well, the performance of the “three thousand and seventieth” is really all right, but the actual cost of this video card categorically does not want to “suck” once again.

They say that due to the 8 GB of video memory, the target resolution of the GeForce RTX 3070 is Full HD. The accelerator is fast, and therefore keep in mind that in such conditions, processor dependence is observed, and the PC must use a powerful CPU and RAM. Nevertheless, ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3070 OC performs well at higher resolutions. For example, in Ultra HD, the card produces at least 60 frames per second in six cases out of 15. At the same time, in seven more games the frame rate does not drop below 40 FPS. Yes, if desired, the frame rate can be increased by lowering the quality of the graphics – after all, the maximum quality is used almost everywhere. Perhaps only in Watch Dogs: Legion and Metro: Exodus, the results are not encouraging from the word “absolutely”. In these AAA projects, the quality will have to be cut more radically.
