Facebook introduced a virtual reality headset that does not look like a huge helmet, but like ordinary sunglasses. At the moment, this is a prototype that has several important disadvantages. But foreign publications believe that technology has a great future.
For example, journalists from Mashable adhere to this opinion. The new VR glasses were developed by specialists from the Reality Labs division and their main feature is the use of holographic lenses. In conventional virtual reality helmets, the lenses are located at a great distance from the display on which the image is displayed – this is necessary to create the effect of “immersion”.
Facebook’s new glasses use holographic lenses. They are located at a small distance from the display – the lack of distance is compensated by the fact that the light from the display is reflected several times in the lenses and only then gets into human eyes. Thanks to this design, the thickness of the glasses does not exceed 9 millimeters, and the mass is 10 grams. The developers believe that in the future they will be able to reduce the weight of the device to 6.6 grams.
But the current version of the device has several important disadvantages. Firstly, only a monochrome image appears in front of the user’s eyes. Secondly, the electronic components of the device are currently located outside the housing. To put glasses on sale, the battery and other components must be placed inside the frame.
Experts from Reality Labs believe that lightweight glasses with high-quality images can be used anywhere for a long time. Although the device provides a good viewing angle and high resolution images, but before the release of the final version, developers need to do a lot of work. And do not forget that those who already wear glasses also want to use the new headset.
In fact, compact virtual reality glasses already exist. One of them is Huawei VR Glass, the thickness of which does not exceed 26.6 millimeters. Their sales began in December, the price of the device is 424 dollars.
