Analyst firm SuperData Research revealed that in August, PC users bought 8.2 million copies of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout for $ 185 million, making it the highest-grossing digital PC video game launch since Overwatch in May 2016.
Interestingly, Horizon Zero Dawn did not make it onto the PC charts. Sony Interactive Entertainment sold 716,000 copies of the former PlayStation 4 exclusive in launch month. That’s more than the PC version of Death Stranding, which sold 477,000 copies in its debut month.
On consoles, sports games made up half of the top ten: FIFA 20, Madden NFL 21, NBA 2K20, MLB The Show 20, and PGA Tour 2K21. The figures are known only for Madden NFL 21 and PGA Tour 2K21 – 570 thousand digital copies and 580 thousand digital copies, respectively. Fortnite was the third highest grossing console game in August and sixth on PC. At the same time, the total income of the game increased by 76% compared to the previous month.
In the mobile sector, SuperData Research recorded a 62% decline in revenue from the previous month. Presumably this happened due to the fact that Fortnite was removed from the App Store and Google Play in mid-August.
Overall, digital gaming revenue reached $ 10.8 billion in August, up 16% year-over-year. Revenue from digital sales on consoles grew the most, at 88% year-over-year, while PC revenue grew 15% and mobile revenue only 3%.
