FAS demanded from “Yandex” to stop giving priority in search to its own services

The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) of Russia, in response to a complaint from a number of companies, obliged Yandex to stop providing its own services, including Yandex.Vertical, Yandex.Market, Yandex.Mediaservices and Kinopoisk, with preferential opportunities in its search system, thereby underestimating the position of other market participants in the search results. Yandex has a month to fulfill this requirement.

In addition, the FAS obliged Yandex to publish the terms of service access to search promotion tools, as well as to ensure equal opportunities in their provision to all market participants.

In August last year, online services ivi, Avito, CIAN, Profi.ru, Tutu.ru, Drom.ru, 2GIS and Zoon appealed to the FAS with a complaint about Yandex’s abuse of a dominant position. The fact is that, according to companies, only Yandex services can get into special search engine widgets that are placed above other search results and that allow you to search without going to a separate page. According to the companies, widgets do not reflect the most appropriate query result, attracting the user’s attention and leading them to Yandex services to the detriment of competing services.

In turn, Yandex said that widgets are the international industry standard, they are placed in the first positions by default and do not have any advantages over regular search results.
