Three new products came out at once: the ultra-budget Y5p and simply the inexpensive Y6p and Y8p. In this article, we’ll talk specifically about the new “six” with the “eight”, which received triple rear cameras, front cameras in cutouts, “droplets”, screens with a diagonal of 6.3 inches, but did not receive Google services: instead of them, mobile services Huawei. On this, perhaps, the common feature of these two models ends – details below.

Despite the almost identical name, the same display diagonal and the general commitment to Huawei mobile services, the differences between the Huawei Y8p and Huawei Y6p in specifications and even in concept are more than common. Let’s talk about each of the smartphones individually.
Huawei Y8p – This is unusual by today’s standards, a relatively small, thin and elegant smartphone. Despite the screen of a rather large diagonal (6.3 inches), it retained decency in dimensions: firstly, due to the minimal frames around the display (the percentage of occupied front surface is not indicated, but the number is clearly more than 80%), and secondly, due to the thin to the faces, thirdly, we say thanks to the slightly curved edges of the back. Be that as it may, holding the Huawei Y8s in your hand is nice, and you can hardly feel the gadget weighing 163 grams in your pocket.
Despite the slightly outdated design of the front panel with a “drop” cut-out, the Huawei Y8p looks good due to its design with glass front and back and polished “metal” plastic around the perimeter. The three-chamber unit is also neatly and tastefully inscribed. There are three color options for Huawei Y8p: light blue, midnight black, and sold exclusively in the company’s online store, emerald green.
Another unusual part for a smartphone in this price category is the AMOLED display. The only company that consistently puts organic LED screens in its low-cost smartphones is Samsung. Now Huawei is also joining the Koreans – the Y8p is a pioneer model in this regard. And it’s worth not just OLED, but with a high resolution (2400 × 1080), so even in theory it’s not worth worrying about a Pentile image scattering into sub-pixels. In practice, all the more there are no problems: the image is sharp, clear and full-color. True, PWM is noticeable when the brightness is reduced to the minimum marks, but a similar problem occurs in expensive OLEDs.
Well, the third distinguishing feature of the Huawei Y8p is a fingerprint scanner, built into the surface of the screen. If in terms of OLED and compactness you can still find some analogues, then Y8p got a chip that only smartphones that cost more than a minimum of time can boast at two. I would not say that it is worth it to rejoice unconditionally – the optical sensor does not respond to the touch of wet fingers and works much slower than the traditional capacitive on the back of the Y6p, but this at least allows you to leave the back neater, without extra inserts.
Otherwise, the Huawei Y8p is consistent with our ideas about what a smartphone should be today for 17 thousand rubles. It uses last year’s HiSilicon Kirin 710F hardware platform – four ARM Cortex-A73 performance cores with a frequency of 2.2 GHz and another four ARM Cortex-A53 cores with a frequency of 1.7 GHz. The graphics coprocessor is ARM Mali-G51 MP4. The manufacturing process is 14 nm. Nothing outstanding, but the efforts of this platform in combination with 4 GB of RAM are enough to make most of the modern games run on the smartphone, all basic applications work smoothly, and the operating system works smoothly – the screens slow down slightly when turning over, compared to the flagships, but this is quite normal for a gadget in this price category. The option for the built-in flash memory is the only one – 128 GB with the option of expanding with a native NM format card (up to 256 GB). I note that the Huawei Y8p received both the current USB Type-C port and a mini-jack.
The rear triple camera consists of a 48-megapixel Quad Bayer main module with a ƒ / 1.9 aperture lens and phase detection autofocus and an 8 MP wide-angle module and a ƒ / 1.8 aperture without autofocus. The third camera is a depth sensor with a resolution of 2 megapixels, which serves to blur the background when shooting portraits. As befits a Huawei smartphone, it knows how to modify pictures using “artificial intelligence” and offers a night mode with multi-frame exposure. By default, shooting on the main module is carried out in a resolution of 12 megapixels, but you can activate full resolution (48 megapixels). Video Huawei Y8p can shoot with a resolution of 1080p at up to 60 frames per second. The front camera, located in the “drop” notch in the center of the status bar, has a resolution of 16 megapixels at aperture ƒ / 2.0 – with it, background blur is also available. In general, the level of photo and video of opportunities Huawei Y8p can not be called an outstanding device, but it is quite adequate to the market.
Huawei Y8p is equipped with a 4000 mAh battery – and by combining an OLED display with a dark theme available in EMUI 10, it can quite confidently hold a charge for up to a day and a half. The smartphone will be available for pre-order on May 26 at a price of 16,999 rubles. Sales will start on June 5th. When pre-ordered, the gift comes with a Huawei Band 4 Pro bracelet.
Huawei Y6p – a smartphone is simpler. From the “face” it is almost impossible to distinguish between Y8p and Y6p unless you include a contrast picture: identical cutouts, screens of the same diagonal, except that the Y8p has a slightly thinner frame and an OLED screen instead of an LCD.
But the rest of the Huawei Y6p is noticeably different: there is a thicker case (thanks to a capacious 5000 mAh battery), and a back without curved edges, and a larger three-chamber unit with a separate flash, and a fingerprint scanner on this very back.
Huawei Y6p has two color variations: emerald green and midnight black. The smartphone is decorated with plastic both at the edges and on the back panel (but it’s difficult to distinguish it from the glass, of course), and, despite the seemingly small difference in size from the Y8p, it feels noticeably a larger gadget, it’s not so comfortable to hold it in your hand .
LCD Huawei Y6p with the same diagonal received HD-resolution, on the fonts you can see a slight pixelation. The hardware platform is the Mediatek MT6762R Helio P22, four Cortex-A53 cores with a frequency of 2.0 GHz and four Cortex-A53 with a frequency of 1.5 GHz, as well as the PowerVR GE8320 graphics subsystem. The manufacturing process is 12 nm. The device is equipped with 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB of non-volatile memory with the ability to expand using a classic MicroSD card, for which a separate slot is allocated – you do not need to sacrifice one of the SIM cards. Another joy of the prudent user is the same battery for five thousand milliampere-hours: despite the liquid crystal display, it will be necessary to charge the smartphone, most likely, once every couple of days. Plus, reverse charging with a cable is available.
The camera is also simpler: the triple block includes a 13-megapixel main module, a 5-megapixel wide-angle and a depth sensor. Sales of Huawei Y6p will start on June 5 at a price of 10,999 rubles.
Smartphones run on Android 10 with the latest version of the EMUI 10.1 shell. About the features of Huawei smartphones in 2020, we have already written a lot. I bring to your attention an article about Huawei Mobile Services and a discussion of “how to live without Google services” of the winter 2019 model. Since then, much has changed – more and more popular software is appearing in AppGallery, the Wallet contactless payment service has been added (both new smartphones have received NFC modules, you can use them to pay in stores), the restrictions on installing applications that are not available in AppGallery through third-party services are reduced, but still yes – you have to put up with the inaccessibility of some applications and games tied to the GMS. At the same time, purely technologically, both Huawei Y8p and Huawei Y6p look as competitive as possible.
