Usually we do a full review of only one version of the flagship smartphone, but now we will make an exception, because several circumstances coincided at once: the lull in the market caused by the raging coronavirus crisis, the big difference between the Pro version and the regular one – including the difference in size and positioning. In general, I decided to talk about the P40 version a little more. This is still a shortened version of the review: I won’t dwell on the software at all (enough has already been said about it), but I tested the stuffing, but here I’ll just give the results without comment – it uses exactly the same hardware platform as in the P40 Pro. But for the rest I’ll analyze everything as in a regular review.

Briefly about the differences between P40 and P40 Pro. There are three versions of the flagship – P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro +. The P40 Pro + version will not be in Russia, and the P40 and P40 Pro are already sold at a price of 44,990 rubles and 69,990 rubles, respectively. Huawei P40 received a small display (6.1 inches) without curved edges, a triple camera with three times optical zoom, a smaller battery and twice less powerful wired charging, as well as lack of moisture protection (only IP53 splash protection). Huawei P40 Pro carries a curved 6.58-inch OLED display and a quad camera with fivex zoom, as well as IP68 waterproof design. All P40s received the proprietary hardware platform Kirin 990 5G (with an active 5G modem, yes, and performed according to the 7 nm FinFET Plus EUV process technology), support for fast wireless charging (27 W). At the same time, the key innovation of the camera – the new 50-megapixel RYYB-sensor – is present on all three P40s, including the younger one, which will be discussed in this article.

Externally, the Huawei P40 is almost no different from the P40 Pro – and this is logical, the design code at least within the framework of one series should be respected. You can recall, for example, the scattering of new OPPO Reno3, where not only are there four modifications, but also the design differs quite dramatically. Here, all the key points coincide – a dual front camera module in the corner of the screen, a rectangle protruding above the case with a set of rear cameras, a glass case with a metal edging in front and behind. There is only one serious difference, in fact, except for the dimensions: in the P40 Pro the display is curved at the edges, here it is absolutely flat.

One of the main distinguishing features of the Huawei P40, which can be considered one of the main advantages of the smartphone, is compactness. Meeting today a powerful smartphone with a screen diagonal of less than 6.3-6.5 inches is not easy, and now the P40 is one of the few. It is unlikely that the pendulum will swing back, but the request for small smartphones that can be controlled with one hand with a certain dexterity still exists – and the fact that Apple did not bury the idea of ​​iPhone SE, and finally released the second generation of the “small”, confirms this.

Interacting with the Huawei P40 is really comfortable – there is a half-forgotten feeling of a certain unity with the gadget. It’s funny that I’m saying this about a smartphone with more than six-inch display – but it really feels like that. Due to the curved back, the device is comfortable to hold in your hand – comfortable, but … slippery: polished glass, classic. Be especially careful when laying it on a not completely flat surface. And it’s better to immediately pack it in a complete case. In my kit, there was no cover, by the way, so I can’t report on my impressions.

I fully described the design impressions in the P40 Pro review – I won’t repeat it. The design is modern, relevant, “correct”, but boring, of course. On the Russian market, the P40 is available in only two color variations, the most dull: black and silver. Dull, but massive, yes.

There is no news in comparison with the Pro version on functional elements. Despite the simplified class of moisture protection (IP53 instead of IP68 – the gadget is protected from splashes, but it is no longer possible to drop it into the water), the mini-jack has not returned, all the keys are concentrated on the right side, and the USB Type-C port and the main speaker are on the bottom.

The fingerprint scanner is built into the “sandwich” of the screen – it is an optical sensor that will not respond to the touch of wet fingers, but it works as it should with dry fingers. Everything is like on Pro – decent speed (at least not annoying), there are no problems with accuracy either. The face recognition system, as in the “firmware”, is not simple, but using the combined efforts of the front camera and IR sensor – due to this, it can be used in the dark. True, the accuracy does not increase from this – if you wish, you can also deceive the local Face ID with a photograph, there is no depth sensor or recognition by retina.

Programmatically, the Huawei P40 is no different from the P40 Pro – it has Android 10 with a quickly updated EMUI 10 shell: fast, functional, beautiful, but without Google Mobile Services and the ability to somehow install them – at the time of writing, there is no reliable way. Huawei P40 received a 6.1-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2340 × 1080 pixels. The pixel density is 422 ppi. Not a record and lower than that of Pro, but in general it’s enough, the picture is smooth. More budgetary, if you forgive such a word when talking about a smartphone for 45 thousand, the status is confirmed by the absence of an increased frequency mode – the screen works exclusively at a frequency of 60 Hz. Only the P40 Pro and P40 Pro + received the 90-Hz display, but I wouldn’t get rid of grief because of this – firstly, it is not 120 Hz, that is, the effect is not so noticeable, and secondly, most direct competitors have such there is still no option. Only OnePlus, for the rest, high-hertz screens received exclusively flagships for 60-70 thousand and gaming smartphones like ROG Phone and Black Shark. It probably hits the prospects of the P40 as a smartphone for gamers, but let’s be honest – he would not have claimed this title with his relatively small screen.

The panel in the Huawei P40 is set to high-quality – with good viewing angles, a normal oleophobic coating (you can remove the factory film without the slightest doubt). But the manufacturer no longer declares compliance with the HDR10 standard and the color gamut of DCI-P3 – although, looking ahead, I’ll say that everything is in order with DCI-P3.

The measured limit level of brightness without software enhancement for auto-tuning is 452 cd / m2 – even higher than the P40 Pro. For a screen using organic LEDs, this is a good level – you won’t have problems with viewing something on the screen on a sunny day. If necessary, it will still grow due to dynamic brightness control.

Screen settings are already known by Huawei P40 Pro: successful implementation of Always-On Display, the lack of auto-adjustment of the color tone depending on the lighting, the ability to choose the color rendition according to one of two presets (“bright” and “normal”) with acceptable color temperature adjustment to your taste . I measured color reproduction with bright and normal presets at the default color temperature.

In the “bright” mode, the color gamut, as I noted above, roughly corresponds to the DCI-P3 standard. The gamma is adequate – 2.31 with the normal behavior of the curves. The color temperature is slightly increased – it gradually grows from dark to light shades from 7,000 to 7,500 K. The average DeltaE deviation for the extended Color Checker palette (shades of gray + a wide range of color shades) is 3.58, with the norm of 3.00. The result is normal.

In the “normal” color rendering mode, the coverage is narrowed to the sRGB standard. The average gamma is lower (2.21), while the gamma curves are slightly less even, but the color temperature is absolutely standard (6,500 K with almost no fluctuations), and the average DeltaE deviation lies exactly at the normal limit of 3.00. Huawei is true to itself – at least the manufacturer sets up the screens of older models approximately the same, at a consistently high level.

The sound is the same as in the P40 Pro – the channel is only digital, there is no problem with wireless data transfer (aptX, aptX HD, LDAC profiles are supported), the wired channel is not impressive. The speaker is monophonic – there is no colloquial speaker as such, a piezoelectric element is used instead.

Huawei P40 received the current flagship platform of the company – HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G. Two processor cores (two ARM Cortex-A76 clocked at 2.86 GHz + two ARM Cortex-A76 clocked at 2.09 GHz + four junior ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.86 GHz), a graph in the form of 16 -nuclear ARM Mali-G76, a special module for operations related to machine learning (NPU), a 7-nanometer process using EUV lithography.

Kirin 990 5G provides a sufficient level of performance so that all current applications open and work quickly (unless, of course, they even start on a smartphone without Google Mobile Services), any games run and work at a good (but not extreme for some projects) frame rate. In a direct collision with competitors based on Snapdragon 865 (and even 855), the Kirin 990 5G will be slightly inferior, primarily in terms of gaming performance, but overall nothing critical, a completely normal modern level, especially for the P40 price category.

There is no problem with throttling, like P40 Pro – CPU Throttling Test recorded a decrease in frequencies of at least 92% of the maximum with an average performance level of 184 GIPS.

There are no options in Russia in memory – only the option with 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128 GB of UFS 3.0 flash is available. Not much, but you can increase the volume with an NM card with a capacity of up to 256 GB. It is not easy to find, it is actually the endemic of Huawei smartphones, which is produced only by Huawei, but you can find and order it. I would not attribute a specific card to the bright flaws of the model.

With wireless connections, the Huawei P40 is standard. The modem supports both a 5G connection, which is completely irrelevant for us today, and 4G (speed is not specified) for all the bands needed in Russia and the CIS (and not only). There are two nano-SIM card slots, one of them is hybrid and can be occupied by a memory expansion card. Wireless modules are the most relevant: Wi-Fi 802.11a / b / g / n / ac / ax, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, a navigation module with dual-channel GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, NavIC.

The most global simplification compared to the P40 Pro, of course, has concerned the rear camera. At the same time, the main module was kept unchanged – it is an Ultra Vision RYYB sensor with a resolution of 50 megapixels (Quad Bayer system used) and physical dimensions of 1 / 1.28 “. A single pixel (combined from four subpixels using Quad Bayer system) reaches 2.44 microns The lens works with this sensor with an equivalent focal length of 23 mm and aperture f/ 1.9. There is optical stabilization and phase detection autofocus.

By default, the Huawei P40 takes pictures with a resolution of 12 megapixels on the main camera, but you can switch to a 50-megapixel format – using a special add-in or in professional mode.

When shooting with a standard focal length, you can count on a good result both in daylight and in artificial light or at night. True, there are questions about the processing system – like on the P40 Pro, pictures can not always please with naturalness, both when activating the AI ​​assistant (enabled by default), and without it. This is manifested primarily when shooting at night, when the smartphone can produce an image with excessively aligned dynamic range and oversaturated colors.

Above, you can see an example of the work of the AI ​​assistant when shooting during the day – in this case, its intervention seems quite appropriate, although, of course, such an excessive “juiciness” is for an amateur.

And here is an example of the camera working in night mode – the top pictures are taken with an extended viewing angle, the bottom ones are on the main module. Please note that a picture without using night mode is brighter, but at the same time paler than in night mode. Neural network processing, unlike multi-frame exposure, does not quite honestly work out lighting, but the result is in any case not bad. Huawei P40 is well within the tradition of the manufacturer to produce mobile “night vision devices.” But in this case – only when shooting on the main module: neither a wide-angle nor a telephoto camera can achieve such a high-quality result.

The wide-angle module here is noticeably simpler than in the P40 Pro, it’s not a 40-megapixel movie camera, but a regular 16-megapixel sensor with an equivalent focal length of 17 mm and aperture f /2.2. A positive difference from most competitive offers is the availability of autofocus. With good lighting, it allows you to achieve excellent shots, but is lost at dusk and darkness – and the night mode does not save the situation, it is not easy to get a sharp image. The dynamic range is also noticeably limited, and even the obligatory software HDR does not completely correct the situation (Huawei traditionally uses “fast” HDR in standard mode and full-fledged, requiring time to shoot multi-frame exposure and further gluing – when activating a special one from the settings menu). The telephone module is also simplified – 8 megapixels, EGF 80 mm, aperture f /2.4. Three times optical and five times hybrid zoom are available, there is an optical stabilizer. What I just said about the P40 wide-angle camera also applies to the zoom module – at night it is practically useless, but works fine in good light. One detail – when switching to zoom mode, you need to wait one or two seconds for the application to switch from digital zoom from the main module to a special camera. Such slowness is a little annoying, but not critical.

The Huawei P40 did not receive a special TOF module for blurring the background during photo or video shooting (yes, there is such an option for video as well, like the big flagships), but this did not affect the portrait mode at all – the smartphone shares the plans very much great, bokeh effects draws beautifully. I will add about the ability to shoot portraits using three focal lengths, which distinguishes the P40 / P40 Pro from a number of competitors. The on-site personalizer is for lovers.

Остальные программные возможности тоже знакомы по P40 Pro, «малой» ничего не лишился: есть и набор фильтров с присутствием брендированных Leica, и монохромный режим, и возможность макросъемки, причем с выбором фокусных расстояний (для этого используется широкоугольный модуль — причем по умолчанию включается цифровой зум до стандартного угла обзора), и панорама, и даже специальный режим для съемки под водой. А вот анонсированного на официальной презентации режима склейки серии с формированием единого «лучшего» снимка пока так и не появилось, стоит ждать будущих прошивок. С бликами на стекле «мозги» смартфона также не справляются.

По видео P40 здорово уступает Pro-версии — нет специальной камеры, соответственно, съемка с широким углом заметно ниже по качеству, нежели со стандартным. Также заметно страдает съемка с зумом. И зум, и широкий угол доступны только на частоте 30 кадров в секунду. Но если не менять фокусные расстояния, P40 выдает картинку ничуть не хуже — съемка ведется в формате 4K с частотой до 60 кадров в секунду, в любом разрешении и при любой частоте доступна «умная» стабилизация, объединяющая цифровой и оптический стабилизатор; качество видео — очень хорошее. Про доступность фирменных эффектов вроде размытия заднего плана при съемке человека или выделения его цветом на черно-белом фоне я уже писал выше. Но с 40-мегапиксельным киномодулем выплеснулась и замедленная съемка с запредельной частотой в 7680 кадров в секунду. Тут есть только опция съемки в Full HD с частотой до 960 кадров в секунду — с 32-кратным замедлением. Тоже неплохо, но не так впечатляюще, конечно.

А вот селфи-камера ровно та же, что и в P40 Pro. 32 мегапикселя (Quad Bayer, снимки делаются с разрешением 8 Мп), ƒ/2,2, без автофокуса и вспышки, зато с дополнительным TOF-модулем и возможностью снимать 4K30p-видео. Одна из лучших селфи-камер на сегодняшний день, на мой вкус.

Huawei P40 получил аккумулятор емкостью 14,44 Вт·ч (3800 мА·ч, 3,8 В), но для смартфона с экраном диагональю 6,1 дюйма этого вполне хватает — по своей автономности P40 совершенно точно превосходит старшую версию. При нормальной работе смартфон держит батарею сутки вполне уверенно, при экстремальной нагрузке живет 10-12 часов.

В нашем тесте с воспроизведением Full HD-видео, на максимальной яркости, с включенным Wi-Fi и автообновлением, результат составил чуть более 13 с половиной часов.

Для зарядки используется актуальный порт USB Type-C (USB 3.1), работает фирменная система быстрой зарядки Huawei Super Charge меньшей мощности, чем в Pro-версии, — 22,5 Вт против 40 Вт. С ее помощью смартфон заряжается полностью чуть более чем за час. Беспроводная зарядка не поддерживается.

Huawei P40 смотрится чуть сиротливо, если сравнивать его с Pro-версией и другими полноразмерными флагманами: камера заметно урезана по возможностям (как по фото, так и по видео), отсутствует влагозащита по стандарту IP68, экран без режима повышенной частоты обновления, нет беспроводной зарядки, а проводная уступает по мощности.

Только сравнивать его не надо — во-первых, на на российском рынке на P40 установлена действительно адекватная цена, во-вторых, это один из самых интересных смартфонов с относительно небольшим экраном из всех. Действительно удобный и при этом мощный смартфон — из альтернатив можно вспомнить только Google Pixel 4 (официально нет на российском рынке и стоит больше), Samsung Galaxy S20 (стоит на 25 тысяч больше), iPhone 11 (стоит на 15 тысяч дороже). Забавно, но прямой конкурент, совпадающий по большинству параметров, по сути, один — Sony Xperia 5. Конечно, есть большое «но»: отсутствие Google Mobile Services, но Huawei довольно шустро сокращает проблемность этой проблемы.

Advantages:

  • прекрасная основная камера;
  • фронтальная камера тоже на уровне — и с возможностью снимать 4K-видео;
  • замедленная съемка с частотой до 7680 кадров/с;
  • очень быстрая как проводная, так и беспроводная зарядка, в том числе и обратная зарядка;
  • качественный и хорошо настроенный OLED-дисплей;
  • влагозащита по стандарту IP68.

Disadvantages:

  • нет Google Mobile Services;
  • скользкий корпус;
  • рядовой звук;
  • нет мини-джека.
