The vivo brand continues its offensive on the Russian market after a break. This time – with a smartphone of the Y-series, designed for the widest possible audience. Distinctive features of the vivo Y30: a large frameless screen, a quad camera, an up-to-date design and a capacious battery
The Y-series is a unique collection of vivo hits. Inexpensive and successful in terms of the balance of characteristics smartphones could gain some popularity at a time when the brand name itself did not say anything to the Russian buyer. But most often, the Y-series models can be found in the “up to 10 thousand rubles” category, and the vivo Y30 is a bird of a slightly higher flight: at the start of sales, the smartphone is offered for 16,990 rubles.
For this amount, you get a device with an up-to-date design (front camera in the corner of an elongated screen), four rear cameras, a capacious battery (5000 mAh) and all the necessary wireless modules (including NFC). Is this enough to impose competition in a very dense stream, consisting of a variety of Xiaomi, Huawei / Honor, Samsung and others. And are there any pitfalls?

You can close your eyes and imagine the vivo Y30 design without ever looking at it. You are not likely to be mistaken. Surely imagine something like this: a dark elongated rectangle with rounded corners and minimal frames around a 19: 9 or 20: 9 format screen (here – 19.5: 9), a glossy rear panel with camera lenses stacked in a corner. Probably in your imagination they are taken in a rectangular block, but they can also be stretched vertically. On the verge, you probably will not find a mini-jack, but here we are still talking about a relatively budget smartphone, so anything is possible. The only catch: how is the front camera implemented – in the cutout in the middle of the status bar or in the hole somewhere in the corner? In 2020, the second option prevails, so we bet on it. Finish the thought experiment. We open our eyes. Yes, of course you guessed it.
But the surprise, perhaps, is still there – a fingerprint scanner on the rear panel, not far from the camera unit, which is inscribed in a rectangle here. Four lenses to extend vertically is not a reason, vivo designers reasoned correctly. It’s now fashionable to put the scanner on one of the faces, combining it with the power key of the device, but the vivo Y30 in this case went against the fashion in favor of a more convenient solution.
In terms of color, the vivo Y30 can have two: “emerald black” and “shining blue”. In the first case, the smartphone, which is quite boring at first glance, plays in color shades from black to dark green – depending on how the light falls. Boredom, boredom, but it looks pretty pretty. Blue also shimmers, but in shades of the same color. Both options are not without elegance.
The front panel is covered with tempered glass of the Panda Glass brand – I have not heard anything about it, I did not find any special properties during testing. The smartphone did not fall from a great height, and he suffered a couple of drops from a small one without problems. Falls, moreover, are inevitable – the back panel is made of polished plastic, slippery and with mandatory rounding at the edges, that is, the smartphone will slide from any imperfectly smooth surfaces. Most likely, the case comes in the kit, but we got a copy without a box.
But to hold a smartphone in your hand, despite the large screen (6.47 inches) is relatively convenient, although the concept of convenience is blurry in this case – I’m just used to the “shovels”, and one more does not cause negative emotions. Of course, this is a two-handed gadget – it is difficult to reach the opposite edge of the screen with the thumb of the same hand in which it lies. At the same time, the vivo Y30 weighs, perhaps, even a bit much for a smartphone of such dimensions – under 200 grams; A suitable excuse for this is a capacious battery.
In terms of functional elements – an absolute classic. Two mechanical keys on the right, a card tray on the left, all ports (including a mini-jack) on the bottom, there is also a monaural speaker.
The fingerprint scanner is located, as I noted above, in a convenient place, directly under the index finger. In my opinion, this is still the most convenient and appropriate location of the fingerprint sensor, although it looks “unfashionable.” Extra detail on the back. The capacitive sensor responds quickly and stably. There is a duplicate user identification system using face recognition – the front camera is involved.
The vivo Y30 is running Android 10 with the FunTouch OS 10 shell. We recently reviewed the previous version of FunTouch OS, and also dwelled on its features, which make the shell stand out against the background. One – the main – feature in the “top ten” has become less: the developers listened to numerous criticisms and abandoned the idea of a split control panel in two – with notifications at the top and quick settings at the bottom. Now they are grouped in a menu called by swiping from the top edge – everything is just like in humans; the settings icons themselves also look traditional, quick access shortcuts have moved to the Jovi panel (the so-called proprietary hint system and quick access to various functions), and smart Jovi scripts are available when you touch the shortcut above the notification panel. This is probably still a plus of FunTouch OS 10 – no need to relearn, changing from another Android-smartphone, but the shell, of course, has lost some of its strange charm. The rest of its features – a characteristic design, unusual profiles (gaming, motorcycle and so on), a children’s mode, the ubiquitous Jovi assistant, the V-Appstore branded application store – are in place. I will add that vivo is consistently working to improve the Russification of the interface of its smartphones – I have not noticed any moments that really hurt the eye.

vivo Y30 received a 6.47-inch LCD screen with an IPS-matrix resolution of 1560 × 720 pixels (HD +). And this, of course, is a compromise move – such a large display with HD-resolution does not allow to achieve a high pixel density, here it is only 266 ppi. The pixel density is 395 ppi. I would not say that pixelation on fonts and icons is striking, but the picture from time to time may seem loose.
In this case, there are no problems with viewing angles, a polarizing layer is applied on the screen, there is a normal oleophobic coating.
The maximum measured brightness of the vivo Y30 display was 440 cd / m2, contrast – 1457: 1. On a sunny day, you can use a smartphone on the street, but I would not say that it is very comfortable.
Display settings are quite traditional: there is a “eye protection” mode with a sharp warming of color tones – it is appropriate to turn it on before bedtime; there is a dark theme that carries a decorative function on a smartphone with an LCD screen; you can change the style and size of fonts, somehow adjust the interaction of applications with the front camera window (crop the window or embed the front camera into it) and adjust the color temperature manually. Color presets are not provided; you can only rely on the factory setting.
The color gamut of the vivo Y30 display is standard, close to sRGB, but with some bias. Gamma is higher than the norm – on average, according to shades of gray, it is 2.32, the color temperature also exceeds the norm, but slightly – the curve is kept at 7,500 K with the reference 6,500 K, but, I recall, this parameter can be changed independently. The average deviation of DeltaE on the Color Checker scale, which includes both a wide range of colors and shades of gray, was 5.19, with a norm of 3.00. The vivo Y30 screen is set to medium.
The sound capabilities of the vivo Y30 are quite ordinary – it can play music through wired headphones without an adapter, which is very worthy nowadays, and can also transmit sound wirelessly with a high level of quality (LDAC and aptX profiles are supported). The external speaker is monaural, loud, but without any serious claims to the sound level.

In vivo Y30, the 2018 Mediatek Helio P35 hardware platform is used. It consists of eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores with a clock frequency of 1.8 GHz (four cores) to 2.35 GHz (four more cores). The graphics subsystem uses the IMG PowerVR GE8320 controller with a frequency of 680 MHz. The manufacturing process is 12 nm.
Already a glance at the composition of the system-on-chip is enough to understand that serious performance is out of the question. The smartphone performs all the basic functions and allows you to rely on the fact that the vast majority of Android games will run on it. Most, but, firstly, not all, and secondly, applications do not start quickly, and in general the smartphone does not differ in the smoothness and speed of processing commands. For example, it takes 3-4 seconds to turn on the camera, and 2-3 seconds to unlock the smartphone; count in your mind the time will come when you launch any application, even the simplest. In games with 3D graphics, you will have to come to terms with either non-maximum settings, or with a reduced frame rate, or with the fact that they really do not work. In the 3DMark Sling Shot test, it turned out that the smartphone does not know how to work with the Vulkan API, and it did not master the standard Geekbench 5 benchmark at all. The results of the remaining benchmarks speak for themselves.
But at the same time, the vivo Y30 demonstrated an enviable stability in operation – during the test, it never hung up and did not require reboots, minus the regular updates provided.
The vivo Y30 is doing well with throttling – a drawdown of up to 74% of the maximum should not be particularly embarrassing, especially since it occurred during the first couple of minutes of the 15-minute benchmark and is not associated with overheating of the device, “at a distance” the vivo Y30 copes with the load confidently. The average performance level was 86 GIPS.
The vivo Y30 is equipped with a 128 GB UFS 2.1 flash drive, this volume can be increased using a microSD memory card – using a dedicated slot for this, you don’t have to sacrifice one of the SIM cards. The RAM here is 4 GB – also quite enough.

The smartphone received an LTE modem capable of receiving data at a maximum speed of 300 Mbps, and transmitting at a speed of 150 Mbps. The list of ranges includes all frequencies necessary for Russia. You can connect to 4G from both nano-SIM.
With vivo Y30, there are no problems with wireless modules: there is dual-band Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.0, and NFC, and a navigation module with GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo.
Every smartphone with a camera whose resolution description does not include large numbers (48, 64, 108 megapixels) today is already surprising, mixed with respect: to abandon the Quad Bayer system, you need an enviable self-confidence. Understanding that these figures alone do not mean obvious superiority in the quality of shooting is far from all potential buyers – I am afraid that not even the majority. And vivo Y30 is just from this rare breed of abandoned.
A quad module is installed in it, and the first violin is played by a camera with a sensor, the resolution of which is 13 megapixels, and a lens aperture f /2,2 with an approximate focal length of 26 mm in 35 mm equivalent. It is equipped with phase detection autofocus. The second camera is responsible for the extended viewing angle (equivalent focal length is about 13 mm), its sensor has a resolution of 8 megapixels, the lens is the same aperture. Autofocus is no longer provided. The third and fourth cameras have an identical resolution of two megapixels and aperture f /2,4. One is used for macro photography, the other is for assisting in plots with artificial blurring of the background.
As you can see, the camera that provides optical zoom is not in the vivo Y30 arsenal, but the possibility of double zoom in the application is provided. Smartphones with sensors made using Quad Bayer technology use the so-called “hybrid zoom” when the camera takes a picture with the maximum available resolution and cuts out the middle from there. The vivo Y30 did not have such an opportunity – nevertheless, the digital zoom in it is implemented at a very tolerable level. The resolution remains unchanged (13 megapixels), the quality suffers, but with perfect lighting it is not difficult to get a normal picture. In low light, the zoom becomes more or less useless. How exactly the smartphone receives these images is not disclosed, but in EXIF the focal length compared to the standard viewing angle is the same (4 mm) – most likely, this is a normal crop with increased resolution (upscaling), including due to neural networks. With the extended viewing angle, the vivo Y30 copes quite confidently, but with the same limitations – you can’t get a decent picture at night. There is no autofocus, but for the vast majority of situations where a wide angle is generally needed, it is not required.
Night shooting is generally not a strong point of the vivo Y30. A relatively sharp frame can be shot on the main camera, but the image will be very blurred due to the noise reduction operation, and it will also sin with abundant chromatic distortions. And this was inevitable, yet there is no special night mode, no optical stabilizer, or optics with high aperture.
The manufacturer makes a separate emphasis on macro shooting in the description of the smartphone, but I would not say that the vivo Y30 had anything to boast about – the macro camera lacks resolution (it gives pictures of 1600 × 1200 size) and aperture, which will cause noticeable noise even in a well-lit room and detail will fall.
Interestingly, in portrait mode, background blurring is not turned on by default, it must be activated separately – and I would call it an advantage of the vivo Y30. Artificial blurring is not always required – for example, shooting well against a wall without a bothersome bokeh effect turned out well. If desired, you can activate artificial bokeh – the vivo Y30 copes confidently with the separation of the model from the background.
The camera application has not changed in comparison with what was in FunTouch 9 – a good organization of space, but a controversial arrangement of some elements. For example, a wide viewing angle is selected for some reason through a separate submenu, and not on the general focal length scale, where only 1x and 2x values are available by default. Also puzzled by the lack of a “professional” mode with manual selection of settings.
In terms of the overall level of shooting, the vivo Y30 is quite adequate to the current state of affairs in its price range: in good lighting, you can get very decent shots when choosing any of the three focal lengths, and in the dark the Y30 camera sags a lot.
Video recording is available with a maximum resolution of Full HD at a frequency of 30 frames per second. There is digital stabilization, but not particularly effective. Снимать можно с тремя фокусными расстояниями. В целом уровень видеосъемки на vivo Y30 очень средний.
Фронтальная камера получила сенсор разрешением 8 мегапикселей и светосилой f/2,1. Автофокуса и вспышки нет, но портретный режим с возможностью размытия заднего плана и удивительно агрессивным бьютификатором (отключаемым, конечно же) на месте. К селфи-камере претензий нет, она весьма хороша.

Из приятного: vivo Y30 получил очень емкий аккумулятор — 19 Вт·ч (5000 мА·ч, 3,8 В). И в данном случае это совершенно точно не пыль в глаза. Не слишком мощная аппаратная платформа потребляет мало энергии, оболочка не дает заряду «утекать сквозь пальцы» (в режиме ожидания заряд практически не уходит) — все вместе позволяет рассчитывать на двое суток автономной работы при стандартной нагрузке. При максимальной нагрузке с выкрученной до предела яркостью дисплея речь идет уже о 12-14 часах.
В нашем традиционном тесте с воспроизведением Full HD-видео на максимальной яркости, с включенными обновлениями и уведомлениями, смартфон продержался 14 часов — для аппарата с ЖК-экраном результат замечательный, один из лучших в истории измерений.
Для зарядки используется порт USB Type-C, поддерживается система (относительно) быстрой зарядки мощностью 10 Вт. Проверить, сколько у vivo Y30 уходит времени на зарядку от комплектного зарядного устройства, у нас возможности не было, поскольку не было этого самого устройства.
Если суммировать все написанное в нескольких словах, то vivo Y30 – смартфон с ярким акцентом на автономности. Слабенькая, но энергоэффективная платформа и крупный, но невысокого разрешения экран в сочетании с емкой батареей дают мощный эффект — это один из немногих современных смартфонов, который вполне реально можно заряжать один раз в два-три дня в зависимости от активности использования.
В остальном это вполне актуальный смартфон младшего среднего класса — с приятным дизайном, пусть и лишенным индивидуальности, с четверной тыльной камерой, которая не блещет в темноте, но при нормальном освещении выдает приятный результат, с хорошей без скидок фронтальной камерой и полным набором необходимых портов и беспроводных модулей (и мини-джек, и NFC на месте).
