AMD in early June updated the presentation for investors, which traditionally contained charts with the dynamics of changes in the company’s market share in various segments. All the statistics mentioned in the document refer to 2019, therefore it cannot be considered fresh, but AMD’s progress in the server segment is striking: in a couple of years, the share was increased eight times.
Recently, AMD executives often reiterated that they did not abandon the goal of overcoming the ten-percent milestone in the market of x86-compatible server processors by the middle of this year, but did not undertake to indicate such landmarks for the future. On the other hand, this does not mean that AMD’s share in the processor market cannot renew historical highs – the company simply prefers to focus on other criteria of success.
In its presentations, AMD operates with IDC research data and its own forecasts. If in 2017 it occupied only one percent of the server market, then in 2018 it strengthened its position to 5%, and by the end of last year it reached a level of at least 8%. We repeat that already this quarter AMD is ready to overcome the bar in 10% of the server market. This can not be considered a historical maximum, but the growth rate of this indicator indicates the unequivocal market success of EPYC processors.
In other segments of the market, AMD’s position is not strengthening so rapidly. According to Mercury Research, last year the company occupied 16.9% of the market for client processors. In the notebook segment, the share reached 16%, but this year it should increase, since AMD is actively promoting its mobile solutions. The number of new laptop models based on brand processors this year will exceed 135 pieces.
The commercial segment, which implies the sale of finished computers and laptops to corporate customers, also carries a good growth potential, as AMD representatives noted more than once in this quarter. According to the results of last year, the company occupied no more than 11% in it, this year more than 70 new PCs based on various AMD processors will enter the market. Company management believes that revenue in the PC market will grow even if the market itself shrinks. This will be achieved by increasing the company’s market share.
