OPPO, in a fierce battle for the attention of the public (if in China it has been doing well for a long time, then outside the Middle Kingdom smartphones of this brand are kind of invisible) created in the spring of 2019 almost the most recognizable middle-class devices. Reno, not distinguished by their characteristics, were noted primarily for the design – a very characteristic strip with an outgrowth on the rear panel was combined with a retractable camera unit, and extendable at an angle.

It seemed like a good design code was found, one could even say identity series – but Reno3 destroys our fresh, like April shoots on trees, ideas about the sequence of Chinese companies. The novelty is deprived of both strips on the rear panel, and a sliding unit with a front camera – instead, a selfie module is placed on the surface of the screen. OPPO Reno3 Pro, like the recently released Find X2 flagship, successfully merges with the mass of their kind (and they merge with each other). OPPO plans to take its new hope for success in the middle price segment with a combination of characteristics, rather than a unique design.

Before analyzing in detail what specific characteristics and capabilities Reno3 has in service, it’s worth diving into the intricacies of the lineup for a minute. Fact that there are four versions of the third Reno, of which two will be sold in Russia. The first is “Ordinary” Reno3, which would have previously received the name Reno3 Z: a ​​6.4-inch screen with a “drop” notch, the Mediatek MT6779 Helio P90 hardware platform, the quad camera is slightly simpler than the Pro version, but with a 44 MP front-end. The second is Reno3 5G (it will not be in Russia), it is, as you might guess, different from regular Reno3an integrated 5G modem, as well as a completely new Mediatek MT6885Z Dimensity 1000L hardware platform and for some reason a modified quad camera with a 64 megapixel main module.

There are also two versions of Reno3 Pro – “regular” and 5G. In the “usual” one uses a dual front camera (which makes the smartphone immediately look like the Huawei P40), the Mediatek Helio P95 platform, a 6.4-inch screen and a quad camera with a 64-megapixel main module. In Russia, there will be the version that received the 5G abbreviation in the name, but with the modem turned off (yes, that’s not easy). In short: the screen is already 6.5 inches, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G platform, a quad camera with a main 48-megapixel module (but slightly different than in Reno3), the only front-facing camera with a resolution of 32 megapixels and an improved set of wireless modules.

The devil himself will break his leg, to be honest – OPPO with its spring update has been a bit over the head. In this article we will talk about a smartphone that entered the international market as OPPO Reno3 Pro 5G, and in Russia it is sold simply as Reno3 Pro.

I already said a couple of words about design above, I won’t spray: OPPO Reno3 Pro looks modern, relevant, even, probably, stylish, but absolutely unremarkable. The manufacturer deliberately deprived the gadget of its own face – this will probably help to make it more massive, but stand out by buying another Reno, you now will not work.

Both the front and back panels are covered with tempered glass Gorilla Glass 5 and bent around the edges – the smartphone, despite its impressive dimensions, is comfortable to hold. But at the same time, it is very slippery, which is inevitable for glass curved cases. Put your Reno3 Pro on the cover right away.

At the same time, thanks to the rejection of the camera hidden in the casing, it was possible to make the Reno3 Pro noticeably thinner – 7.7 against 9.0 mm. It also affects the perception of the gadget and the convenience of handling it. The front camera does not eat up too much space, although it did not work to make such a miniature lens like the vivo X30 Pro or OPPO Find X2. But on the status bar everything you need is placed without problems.

I have already mentioned the ordinary design of the Reno3 Pro several times, but it should be noted that the block with four cameras is not solved in a standard way for this season, when the lenses are assembled in a large square or rectangle, but in a more traditional and, perhaps, more elegant – with an elongated die. Slightly raised above the body, of course.

The functional elements are standard: there is no mini-jack for no reason, the earpiece is inscribed under the upper edge, which was not easy – the screen still occupies the vast majority of the front surface (92.1%). The on / off keys of the gadget and the volume / shutter button of the camera are located on opposite sides of the case, the SIM card slot is located below, near the USB Type-C port and the main speaker. Moisture and dust protection has not been declared – most likely, the case will calmly respond to splashes or raindrops, but you should not drop your smartphone into the water.

The fingerprint scanner is located below the screen – an optical sensor is used. There is also a face recognition system. But the operation of both user identification systems could not be verified – in the test Reno3 Pro, a mode was established in which there was no access to these functions. It can be assumed that everything should be fine with a smartphone with this, yet OPPO has rich and successful experience in this area – but assuming one thing and speaking reliably is another. Alas, we are forced to leave without comment.

The smartphone is running an Android 10 operating system with ColorOS 7.1 shell. I talked about it in detail in the OPPO Find X2 review. In short – this is not without small flaws, but is rapidly developing and adapting to the European user, a system that you can already handle today without experiencing serious inconvenience. It is fast, it works stably enough (although, again, the demo mode of the test Reno3 Pro does not give the right to draw far-reaching conclusions), it can offer an interesting set of unique functions (Relax application for relaxing from a smartphone, atypical user profiles, quick access panel, not tied to a curved screen) and almost annoying awkward Russification.

The OPPO Reno3 Pro screen matrix is ​​clearly inherited from Reno2, but with some improvements. It’s the same Super AMOLED with a diagonal of 6.5 inches and a resolution of 2400 × 1080 pixels, but now it is curved at the edges (it’s more convenient to use, but the work surface is slightly smaller). The pixel density is 401 ppi – the result is average, but in fact sufficient for most users. It’s almost impossible to see the pixelation, except that in 4K video there may be a little lack of sharpness.

There are no problems with the viewing angles, an oleophobic coating is available, and high-quality – it is not difficult to wipe the prints. But all this was before, the main innovation of the Reno3 Pro display in comparison with its predecessor is the refresh rate of 90 Hz. You can enable it at any time, it does not work at some special permission or in dedicated applications. The smoothness of the update applies to all applications and screens of the smartphone.

The measured brightness was 488 cd / m2 – approximately at the level of Reno2. This is a very good indicator for the OLED screen, which can be seen on the graph. For comparison, the Huawei P40 Pro data is presented there – simply because the direct price competitor Reno3 Pro – P40 – has not yet reached us. But about him, we will also write in the near future.

In the display settings, you can change the font size, activate the blue filter, change the color temperature, turn on the system for displaying clocks and notification icons on a locked smartphone. There are presets for color rendering – you can choose between “bright” (extended color space) and “gentle” (sRGB) modes. By default, the smartphone is set to “bright” mode, I measured the color rendering of the screen in both.

In the “bright” mode, the color space approaches the DCI-P3 standard. The average range of shades of gray is 2.27, the curves scatter a little in light shades, but not too much. The color temperature is elevated and stays mostly at the level of 8,000 K with a short-term dip of up to 7,000 K. The colors are cold by default. The average deviation of DeltaE over the extended Color Checker palette (shades of gray + a wide range of color shades) is 3.67 (with a norm of 3 and a reference value of 2).

In the tender mode, the color space is very close to the sRGB standard. The average gamma is 2.28 with relatively calm behavior of the curves, the color temperature ranges from 7,000 to 8,000 K. The average DeltaE deviation for the extended Color Checker palette is 3.53, which is also not very far from the norm (3.00). The display is not configured perfectly, but pretty well.

“Sounds” OPPO Reno3 Pro is not bad. With headphones, he presents no surprises: there is no mini-jack, the sound path is normal, there is support for all modern Bluetooth profiles necessary for transmitting Hi-Res sound. But external speakers can please with stereo and its pretty high quality. OPPO Reno3 Pro is not only loud, you can even recognize a certain breed in its sound. If you wish. Still, this is a smartphone.

Iron and performance

OPPO Reno3 Pro is one of the first smartphones based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G platform, introduced in December 2019 along with the flagship Snapdragon 865. The platform consists of eight Kryo 475 cores: one redesigned high-end 2.4 GHz Cortex-A76 core, one productive 2.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A76 core and 1.8 GHz six energy-efficient ARM Cortex-A55 cores. The graphics processor is Adreno 620, the clock frequency of which is not disclosed, but in version G it should be increased relative to the usual Snapdragon 765. The manufacturing process is 7 nm.

OPPO is very consistent in choosing processors for Reno series smartphones: the first had a Snapdragon 710, the second had a Snapdragon 735G, the third (in the Pro version) had a Snapdragon 765G. Three in a row. The new platform, as can be understood by the letter at the end of the name, is designed for more powerful systems and is designed for gamers. Well, it doesn’t stand here for nothing – yes, it does not rise to the level of flagship platforms 765G, but there is enough power to run any game from Goole Play and play it at high graphic settings. It’s probably not worth counting on the maximum frequency in the main online games, but playing them relatively comfortably is quite possible.

8 GB of RAM LPDDR4X interact with the platform in Reno3 Pro – Snapdragon 765G does not support the LPDDR5 standard, this season mid-range smartphones will not get the fastest RAM possible. This will remain the privilege of the flagships.

The OPPO Reno3 Pro cooling system has proved to be wonderful – including, therefore, it’s quite safe to take this smartphone into account for lovers to seriously hack. In the synthetic test CPU Throttling Test, there was no reduction in frequencies at all (and no dynamics in this regard, a very smooth performance curve), and the average performance was 156 GIPS.

In the first Reno there was no memory card slot, in the second it was, in the third (in our version) it disappeared again. From what? Why? Who knows. But the amount of memory is quite sufficient so as not to worry much about this issue – 256 GB (UFS 2.1).

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G includes a 5G X52 modem, but OPPO does not declare its presence in the Russian version of the smartphone, and at the same time it does not write directly about the disabled software support for working with fifth-generation networks. In any case, today for us working with 5G is not too relevant, it makes no sense to focus on this.

With LTE OPPO, Reno3 Pro works as normal. The manufacturer does not report the modem speed, but the list of ranges is extensive and all the frequencies we need are present in it. Unfortunately, it is not possible to seriously test the performance of the LTE modem in the current conditions, but it seems that it is hardly Reno3 Pro that will show any weakness here. At least in the suburbs, communications worked well.

The OPPO Reno3 Pro has all the necessary wireless modules, it even demonstrates some chic in this respect: Bluetooth 5.1, Wi-Fi 802.11a / b / g / n / ac (it did without Wi-Fi 6 anyway) and NFC with support Google Pay The navigation module works with the main systems: GPS (including A-GPS), GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo.

Compared to its predecessor, the OPPO Reno3 Pro has hardly received any development in terms of the rear camera – although in our time it is in this area that all the main differences between one generation of smartphones and the other are usually concentrated. Almost the same camera unit is installed here as in Reno2, with a few exceptions.

The main camera will not surprise anyone. This is the main module of 2019 – Sony IMX586 with a resolution of 48 megapixels (physical dimensions of the sensor – 1 / 2.0 “), equipped with a lens aperture ƒ/ 1.7 and with an equivalent focal length of 26 mm. Phase autofocus and optical stabilizer are provided. By default, using this module, the user receives images with a resolution of 12 megapixels with a grouping of pixels, but you can switch to 48 megapixel mode at any time.

The second camera is used for an extended viewing angle, we also saw it in Reno2: 8 megapixels (physical size of the sensor – 1 / 3,2 “), a lens with EGF 13 mm and aperture ƒ/ 2.2, without autofocus. For a double optical zoom, a 13-megapixel camera is used (the physical dimensions of the sensor are 1 / 3.4 “) with a lens combining 52 mm EGF and aperture ƒ/ 2.4. With it, we can take shots with double optical zoom, also on the standard scale for choosing the focal length, a five-fold zoom is proposed – hybrid. Pictures taken with a normal viewing angle and zoom get a resolution of 12 megapixels (with the ability to take 48 megapixel pictures on the main camera), and shooting on a wide-angle module is carried out with a resolution of 8 megapixels. The fourth camera is equipped with a 2-megapixel monochrome sensor (1/5 “) and a lens with aperture ƒ/ 2.4. The purpose of this module OPPO does not disclose: most likely, it helps when shooting portraits, perhaps somehow involved in night shooting.

The overall level of shooting remained approximately the same as that of Reno2, with minimal progress thanks to advanced software processing. А вот гибридный пятикратный уже не слишком радует — картинка рассыпается, даже при нормальном освещении очень активно включаются алгоритмы шумоподавления, «убивающие» детали. Сохранилась и прежняя претензия к тому, что баланс белого и цветопередача скачут в зависимости от того, какую камеру вы выбираете. Не хватает единообразия и гладкости при переходе.

Ночная съемка — не сильная сторона OPPO Reno3 Pro. Смартфон может «выудить» какую-то картинку даже в условиях кромешной темноты (см. нижний пример из предложенных), но говорить о по-настоящему качественной работе камеры смартфона в темноте не приходится. Гаджет порадует сразу двумя «ночными» режимами работы — в обычный он переходит при недостаточном освещении и старается программно доработать изображение; вечером, в сумерках, лучше пользоваться камерой таким образом. Когда же света становится критически мало, стоит перейти в специальный ночной режим, в котором Reno3 Pro занимается привычным для многих собратьев делом — склеивает изображение из множества кадров, сделанных с разной экспозицией. Делает он это довольно средне — картинка относительно гладкая и светлая, но лишена естественности. «Мозги» смартфона слишком стараются и не знают меры.

В портретном режиме есть программное размытие заднего плана, которое работает неплохо, особенно если не пытаться «открыть диафрагму» на максимум — тогда становятся слишком заметны артефакты по контуру объекта. Недостаток портретного режима очевиден — в качестве базы используется картинка, полученная при помощи оптики с эквивалентным фокусным расстоянием 26 мм, и мы видим заметные пространственные искажения, которые особенно мешают при съемке крупным планом. Ростовые или поясные портреты на OPPO Reno3 Pro при этом можно делать вполне неплохого качества. Доступен встроенный бьютификатор.

В OPPO Reno3 Pro нельзя просто взять и отключить нейросетевые вычисления в базовом режиме фотосъемки — для этого необходимо перейти в «профессиональную» вкладку с ручными настройками. В ином случае смартфон будет обязательно распознавать сцену и немного подстраивать изображение согласно своим представлениям о прекрасном. При этом работает ИИ относительно аккуратно, отключать его желания не возникает, за исключением некоторых моментов, связанных со сложным освещением. Но ситуацию можно «усугубить», включив режим Dazzle Colors, который в русской версии ОС называется «Усиление цветности». В нем смартфон сильно поднимает насыщенность — снимки здорово теряют в естественности.

Приложение камеры хорошо знакомо и по прошлым версиям ColorOS — оно довольно удобное (переключение между фокусными расстояниями камеры организовано точно лучше, чем у Huawei), но не слишком функциональное: настроек минимум, возможности снимать в RAW нет.

По общему уровню камера Reno3 Pro несколько отстает от большинства конкурентов — если для состояния на осень 2019-го это отставание казалось некритичным, то теперь, с выходом Xiaomi Mi Note 10 и Xiaomi Mi 10, а также OnePlus 7T и тем паче Huawei P40, — текущее предложение OPPO в среднем классе выглядит аутсайдером.

OPPO Reno3 Pro умеет снимать видео в 4К с частотой до 30 кадров в секунду или в Full HD с частотой до 60 кадров в секунду. Доступны два варианта стабилизации — обычная и профессиональная. Оба работают только в Full HD-разрешении и очень эффективны. Примеры можно увидеть выше. Сохранилась возможность снимать видео с искусственным боке, которую мы также видели и на флагмане Find X2.

Фронтальная камера в OPPO Reno3 Pro получила 32-мегапиксельный сенсор (система Quad Bayer, снимки делаются с разрешением 8 Мп) с объективом светосилой ƒ/2,4, без автофокуса, но со вспышкой. Качество съемки хорошее — получить нормальные селфи можно как с идеальным светом, так и при неярком искусственном освещении. Есть портретный режим и продвинутый бьютификатор с возможностью уменьшить или увеличить глаза, сгладить кожу и т. д.

OPPO Reno3 Pro получил аккумулятор на 15,3 Вт·ч (4025 мА·ч, 3,8 В). Батарея рядовой емкости, и смартфон показывает ожидаемые результаты по автономности. Если не активировать постоянный 90-герцевый режим, пользоваться темной темой интерфейса и не держать яркость экрана на максимуме — он спокойно проживет день, а при максимальной нагрузке — 8-9 часов. Если «свистать всех наверх», то аккумулятор разрядится уже за 10-12 часов даже при рядовой нагрузке.

В нашем традиционном тесте с воспроизведением Full HD-видео на максимальной яркости, при включенном беспроводном соединении, с действующими обновлениями, OPPO Reno3 Pro продержался более 11 часов. Хороший результат.

Для восстановления заряда аккумулятора используется система быстрой подзарядки VOOC 4.0. Не Super VOOC, как в серии Find X, с его разделенным на два аккумулятором и получасовым полным циклом зарядки, но тоже плохо. На то, чтобы зарядить OPPO Reno3 Pro от нуля до ста процентов, у фирменной зарядной системы мощностью 30 Вт уходит час. При этом смартфон не греется — утверждается, что этот метод вообще почти не влияет на ресурс аккумулятора.

OPPO Reno3 Pro обменял необычный дизайн и стопроцентно узнаваемое собственное лицо на… Действительно, на что он это обменял? По сути, мы имеем дело с эволюционным развитием серии без резких движений — новая, более мощная платформа среднего класса, почти такой же AMOLED-дисплей, но с загнутыми краями и частотой 90 Гц, свежая фронталка, обновленная зарядка, стереофонические динамики. И на этом более-менее все. Даже тыльная камера оставлена без изменений. Конкуренты при этом не сидят сложа руки, и ситуация по сравнению с осенью, когда Reno2 выделялся на общем фоне именно своей непохожестью на остальных, сейчас еще жестче.

Это хороший смартфон без явных слабых мест. Но и без явных сильных, и именно в этом его проблема. При цене 50 тысяч рублей он оказывается несколько на перепутье — не очень понятно, для кого он и за счет чего должен выигрывать конкуренцию у Huawei P40 (или даже Huawei P30 Pro — для которого доступны гугл-сервисы!), OnePlus 7T/7T Pro, Xiaomi Mi Note 10.

Advantages:

  • яркий и качественно настроенный AMOLED-дисплей;
  • fast charge;
  • хорошее качество съемки на фронтальную камеру;
  • стереодинамики.

Disadvantages:

  • нет пыле- и влагозащиты;
  • нет слота для карты памяти;
  • съемка на основную камеру на прошлогоднем уровне;
  • рядовой дизайн.
