The Russian GLONASS system failed to reach the positioning accuracy indicators prescribed in the federal target program for the development of the navigation platform for 2012–2020.
Currently, the GLONASS constellation includes 28 devices, of which 24 are used for their intended purpose. Two satellites are in flight testing, one each in the orbital reserve and one in maintenance.
As follows from the data of Roskosmos, which leads “RIA Novosti”, by the end of this year, the accuracy of the system for ordinary civilian users should have increased from 9.6 to 8.5 meters. For special consumers, it was planned to raise the indicator from 2.8 to 0.6 meters.
However, while the accuracy of GLONASS for ordinary users, in fact, remains at the level of eight years ago: it has risen from 9.6 meters in 2012 to 9.5 meters in 2020. The highest accuracy was recorded from January 30 to January 31, 2020 – 0.93 meters.
However, experts say that the situation with increasing the accuracy of GLONASS is not critical. The fact is that the system is gradually being updated with the introduction of next generation satellites, which will improve the performance of the navigation platform. So, the devices with a high-precision signal included in the system demonstrate an indicator of 0.38 meters. In the coming years, new satellites will be added to the platform to help improve overall positioning accuracy.
In addition, experts believe that the current accuracy of GLONASS is quite sufficient for solving most problems.
