Along with other manufacturers, the Taiwanese company MSI introduced its motherboard for the Comet Lake-S processors of the LGA1200 design, and there are many different ones at once. In total, the company has 11 motherboards in its assortment from the simple and inexpensive Z490-A PRO to the elite MEG Z490 Godlike, leading the MSI series of branded models for extreme overclocking MEG (MSI Enthusiast Gaming). There are four models in this series, and on any of them you can squeeze the maximum out of existing Intel processors if you have very, very effective cooling and a successful processor instance. However, it is the “god-like” MEG Z490 Godlike that is at the top of this hierarchy – and it is from it that we will begin our acquaintance with the MSI motherboards on Intel Z490.

⇡ # Packaging and equipment

The large cardboard box that ships with the MSI MEG Z490 Godlike has a vertical orientation and a plastic carrying handle. The board itself is depicted on its front side, the series and model name are indicated next to it.

On the opposite side of the box, the key features of the product are described, its brief characteristics are indicated and a list of interface panel ports is provided.

Features of the board are detailed under the top hinged box lid.

On a paper sticker from one of the ends you can find the serial number of the product and a very short list of technical specifications.

Inside the main package are two more flat boxes. In one of them lies the actual board, and in the other – components. Among them are all kinds of cables and accessories, antennas for the wireless communication module, instructions and stickers.

Also included is the M.2 Xpander-Z Gen4 S expansion board for additional NVMe M.2 format drives. We will meet her during the course of the article.

Since the name of the new MSI motherboard – MEG Z490 Godlike – is consonant with something sublime, the company didn’t start trifling with its cost: you can buy this model at the price of a more or less decent laptop, that is, at least 70 thousand rubles. Also for this amount you will receive a three-year guarantee for a fee.

⇡ # Design and features

MSI MEG Z490 Godlike is made in the best traditions of flagship motherboards on any system logic sets: the E-ATX form factor (305 × 277 mm), the “armor” over almost the entire PCB and the weight of one and a half processor supercoolers.

There are no bright details in the design of the board, but thanks to the smooth mirror surfaces of the inserts and chopped radiators on the ports of the M.2 MEG Z490 Godlike drives, it looks interesting, modern and strict.

A protective and reinforcing Chest Plate, as well as heat distribution plates on power circuits are installed on the back of the PCB.

On the interface panel of the board there is everything necessary for any tasks, not counting the video outputs that on boards of this level lose all meaning. Here are the BIOS update and CMOS reset buttons, a combined PS / 2 port, 10 USB ports of various types, two network sockets, connectors for the antennas of the wireless communication module, an optical output and five gold-plated audio connectors.

All ports are indicated by icons or signed, and USB in addition to this are highlighted.

Without radiators and a plastic casing, the board looks as follows.

The MSI MEG Z490 Godlike is based on an eight-layer PCB, and the mounting holes in it have a double ring of grounding points – this should guarantee enhanced protection against electrostatic discharges.

The board is complex and, perhaps, even oversaturated with components and controllers, to understand which the instruction manual and the layout of the main elements from it will help.

The LGA1200 processor socket on the MSI MEG Z490 Godlike differs from the socket on other boards with the Intel Z490 with a different arrangement and number of stabilizing capacitors, as well as a hole for the temperature sensor.

The list of processors compatible with the board includes all LGA1200 processors that have been released in the design, from the 35-watt Intel Pentium Gold G6500T to the flagship Intel Core i9-10900K with its official, but not real 125-watt TDP.

The CPU power system is built on a 16-phase circuit.

Each phase consists of an Intersil ISL99390 90 A MOSFET and a third generation titanium coil

Thus, in total, the processor can supply 1440 A to the processor, which is enough for any present and future Intel processors (prepare only a more powerful power supply). Another power phase of the exact same layout is reserved for VCCSA.

Power management is implemented by an eight-channel Intersil ISL69269 controller with Intersil ISL6617A doublers, symmetrically wired on the back of the PCB.

Below the processor socket, you can see two more phases of the power supply, which, apparently, are allotted to VCCIO.

To provide power to the MSI MEG Z490 Godlike, there is one 24-pin connector, a pair of eight-pin and one six-pin block at the bottom of the PCB.

It is recommended to connect the cable to it only when two video cards with high power consumption are installed on the board. There is no need to talk about installing three video cards on boards with the Intel Z490 chipset due to limitations in the number of PCI-Express lines (only the x8 / x8 / x4 circuit is possible).

Speaking of chipset. On the MSI MEG Z490 Godlike, it is covered with a flat heatsink with a plastic pad and thermal pad. Her traces are visible on the chipset crystal.

Intel Z490 resources, coupled with CPU resources, are allocated in the following block diagram.

Four DIMM slots for DDR4 standard memory have a Steel Armor metal shell, reinforcing the slots and protecting the contacts in them from electromagnetic interference, as well as additional soldering points to the PCB. The module locks in the slots are located only on the right side.

On the MSI MEG Z490 Godlike, memory is organized according to the Daisy Chain topology. The board supports working with modules with an effective frequency of 5.0 GHz, examples of which are already on the certified list, and the proprietary DDR4 Boost technology should facilitate overclocking and increase stability. We add that the memory power system is single-channel.

Like the RAM slots, all PCI-Express 3.0 x16 are also clad in a Steel Armor shell, which quadruples their kink.

Note that the first slot is far from the zone of the processor socket, which means that it will not interfere with the installation of overall supercoolers. It is he and the second slot that are connected to the PCI-Express processor lines and can operate in x16 / x0 or x8 / x8 modes. Switching operation of the slots is implemented by Pericom PI3EQX16 signal amplifiers.

The lower PCI-Express 3.0 x16 can only work in x4 mode, and besides it there is still a small PCI-Express x1 for expansion cards. The distribution options for chipset and processor lines between PCI-Express slots and M.2 ports are shown in the table.

Here we add that, according to official information from MSI, the Godlike MEG Z490 motherboard supports a high-speed PCI-Express 4.0 bus, which will be activated simultaneously with the release of new Intel processors and a BIOS update.

The board does not stand out in terms of ports for SATA-type drives: the Intel Z490 chipset uses six SATA III ports with a throughput of up to 6 Gb / s.

But with M.2 ports for SSD, the situation is much more interesting. On the board itself there are three Turbo M.2 ports, the throughput of each of which can reach 32 Gb / s. The first two ports are powered by a chipset and support both SATA- and PCI Express-drives with a length of 42 to 110 mm.

The lower slot uses processor lines and can work exclusively with PCIe-drives with a length of 42 to 80 mm. For all drives in the M.2 ports there are two-sided radiators with thermal pads.

The M.2 Xpander-Z Gen4 S expansion board included in the MSI MEG Z490 Godlike expansion card will help to further increase the number of high-speed drives, and immediately with native support for the PCI-Express 4.0 bus.

It is possible to install two more actively-cooled SSDs in it from 42 to 110 mm long.

Like other flagship boards, the MSI MEG Z490 Godlike is equipped with a 10-gigabyte network controller Aquantia AQC107, as well as a 2.5-gigabit Realtek RTL8125B.

For wireless networks, the Intel AX201 module with support for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 is responsible. Distribute network streams will help the utility MSI Gaming Lan Manager.

The developers of MSI MEG Z490 Godlike equipped the board immediately with nineteen different types of USB ports. On the interface panel – 10 ports, including a pair of USB 3.2 Gen2 (Type-C), implemented by the Intel T803A900 controller (Thunderbolt 3 interface with a bandwidth of up to 40 Gb / s).

Two USB 2.0 pads (4 ports), two USB 3.2 Gen1 (4 ports from the ASMedia ASM1074 hub) and one high-speed USB 3.2 Gen2 for the front panel of the system unit are soldered to the PCB board.

It seems that Realtek ALC1220 has monopolized the audio market for high-performance boards, since we are testing the third flagship on the Intel Z490 – and this audio processor is again installed on it.

The digital-to-analog converter ESS E9018 combo DAC, Chemicon audio capacitors, a dedicated headphone amplifier with a resistance of 600 Ohms, click protection when connecting a cable, and also isolating the area of ​​audio components from the rest of the printed circuit board with a non-conductive strip are designed to improve sound quality.

We add gold-plated connectors and support for Nahimic 3 surround sound technology to the same piggy bank.

Multi I / O and monitoring functions on the MSI MEG Z490 Godlike are implemented by the Nuvoton NCT6687D-M controller.

You can connect 10 fans with PWM support to the board, or without it, then the speed will be regulated by voltage (DC).

In addition, a three-pin Water Flow connector and two connectors for temperature sensors are provided.

A set of tools for overclocking the processor is also quite sufficient: LED indicators, various buttons and a multifunctional POST-code indicator are added to contact points for voltage measurements and jumpers.

The latter is implemented quite original, as it is adjacent to a small display on which various kinds of information can be displayed, including monitoring data.

Of course, the MSI MEG Z490 Godlike could not do without backlighting – well, where now without it, darling? The chipset heatsink area is highlighted and – especially beautifully – the area of ​​the interface panel casing (the dragon in the first photo in the article is just from there). The proprietary backlight system is called MSI Mystic Light and supports countless operating modes.

Three RGB RGB connectors, two of which are addressable, will help expand the backlight of the board with LED strips. In addition, the board has a 3-pin Corsair LED connector for connecting and controlling the backlight of this company’s products.

Most connectors are located at the bottom of the PCB. In addition to the already demonstrated buttons and connectors, you can see a small BIOS selection switch there.

On the MSI MEG Z490 Godlike dual BIOS with the ability to automatically restore the image from the backup chip and update without using a processor and RAM.

To cool the VRM circuits, a double radiator with a heat pipe is provided, and the plate on the back of the board performs only a protective function and strengthens the board by bending.

The VRM radiator has two small fans.

The effectiveness of their work is in great doubt with us, because they suck in air from nowhere and throw it out to nowhere. It’s good that they turn on only when the VRM circuits reach a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius and above.

Particular tenderness in these fans is caused by the ratio of the rotor diameter and the useful area of ​​the blades, which are more like saw teeth than fan blades. MSI would have been better off without these little turntables.

⇡ # UEFI BIOS Features

The flagship MSI MEG Z490 Godlike motherboard is endowed with an AMI UEFI BIOS with a multilingual interface, a graphical shell and the brand name MSI Click BIOS 5. The latest version 7C70 available at the time of testingv11 was dated May 20 of this year. The board starts in the EZ Mode basic settings mode, where you can not only find out information about the system and the main settings, but also activate the auto-acceleration mode of the Gamu Boost processor and XMP RAM.

When switching to advanced mode, the top panel of the window remains unchanged, but in the lower two-thirds of the screen six main sections appear.

The first one contains settings of peripheral devices and board controllers, boot and security parameters.

Since these settings do not require additional comments, we simply provide screenshots of the BIOS with them.

Much more interesting is the BIOS section with the telling name OC. There is where to turn to the overclocker: any parameters of the processor and RAM are available for change, including voltage and limit adjustments.

The possibilities of changing the main voltages in the BIOS of the MSI MEG Z490 Godlike motherboard are given in the table with the maximum and minimum values, as well as the step for changing them.

Конечно же, есть и подраздел с регулировками стабилизации напряжений, где основной параметр – CPU Loadline Calibration Control – имеет восемь уровней стабилизации с графическим представлением степени этой самой стабилизации. Во время тестирования платы мы коснёмся этой темы отдельно.

Для центрального процессора и памяти есть подробнейшие информационные окна BIOS.

Настроенный BIOS платы можно сохранять в шести профилях, хотя хотелось бы восемь. Впрочем, для нынешнего поколения процессоров Intel эта «проблема» неактуальна.

Есть в BIOS и встроенная утилита мониторинга и настройки подключенных к плате вентиляторов, а также браузер платы.

Единственная ошибка BIOS данной версии, которую нам удалось зафиксировать во время настройки, это зависание оболочки при попытке отключения контроллера Thunderbolt 3, а в остальном она работает без сбоев и быстро. Отображение изменённых настроек при выходе из BIOS здесь также присутствует.

⇡#Разгон и стабильность

Проверка стабильности, оверклокерского потенциала и производительности материнской платы MSI MEG Z490 Godlike была проведена в закрытом корпусе системного блока при температуре в помещении от 26,8 до 27,2 градуса Цельсия. Конфигурация тестового стенда состояла из следующих комплектующих:

  • системная плата: MSI MEG Z490 Godlike (Intel Z490, LGA1200, BIOS 7C70v11 от 25.05.2020);
  • процессор: Intel Core i9-10900K 3,7-5,3 ГГц (Comet Lake-S, 14+∞+ нм, Q0, 10 × 256 Kбайт L2, 20 Мбайт L3, TDP 125 Вт);
  • система охлаждения CPU: Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black (два 140-мм вентилятора Noctua NF-A15 на 770–1490 об/мин);
  • термоинтерфейс: ARCTIC MX-4;
  • видеокарта: MSI GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER Ventus XS OC GDDR6 6 Гбайт/192 бит 1530-1815/14000 МГц;

Тестирование было проведено под управлением операционной системы Microsoft Windows 10 Pro (1909 18363.900) с установкой следующих драйверов:

Стабильность системы при разгоне мы проверяли стресс-утилитой Prime95 29.4 build 8 и другими бенчмарками, а мониторинг проводился с помощью HWiNFO64 версии 6.27-4190.

Традиционно перед тестированием приведём характеристики платы с помощью утилиты AIDA64 Extreme.

Сначала мы проверили автоматические настройки BIOS платы, лишь активировав XMP оперативной памяти и отключив неиспользованные контроллеры. Процессор стартовал в штатном режиме и работал на частотах вплоть до 5,3 ГГц.

Первый тест Prime95 мы провели без использования AVX-инструкций — и по итогам сразу стало понятно, что даже при автоматических настройках BIOS плата MSI MEG Z490 Godlike снимает ограничения процессора по уровню TDP (215 ватт в пике нагрузки при 125 ваттах в спецификациях Intel Core i9-10900K).

⇡ #Автоматические настройки BIOS (AVX выключены)

Напряжение ядра процессора в нагрузке держалось на уровне 1,188 В, а его максимальная температура достигла 80 градусов Цельсия. Особо отметим, что при автоматических настройках BIOS плата не завышает напряжения VCCIO и VCCSA, в отличие от флагманских решений других производителей на базе набора логики Intel Z490. Цепи VRM греются не выше 56 градусов Цельсия, вентилятор их радиатора не работает.

Далее настал черёд теста Prime95 с активированными AVX-инструкциями.

⇡ #Автоматические настройки BIOS (AVX активированы)

При такой нагрузке частота процессора держится на отметке 4,9 ГГц при напряжении 1,195 В и пиковом уровне TDP оказывается чуть выше 281 Вт. Температуры, как видите, значительно выше, чем без использования AVX, чего и следовало ожидать. Тем не менее даже при столь существенно возросшей нагрузке цепи VRM платы прогрелись только до скромных 67 градусов Цельсия, а вентилятор по-прежнему не включался.

Далее, прежде чем перейти к попыткам разгона, мы проверили эффективность алгоритмов работы функции стабилизации напряжения на ядре процессора – Loadline Calibration (LLC). Нам удалось протестировать три уровня LLC — от самого слабого, 8, до уровня ниже среднего, 6. Процессор работал в номинальном режиме, а в нагрузке AVX-инструкции не участвовали. Результаты получились довольно интересными.

С минимальным уровнем LLC плата стабилизирует процессор точно так же, как и при автоматических настройках, то есть MSI MEG Z490 Godlike задействует минимальный алгоритм LLC, если ничего не менять в BIOS. Следующий (седьмой) уровень увеличивает напряжение на ядре процессора в нагрузке с 1,188 до 1,213 В, а максимальная температура возрастает на 7 градусов Цельсия. Ещё агрессивнее себя ведёт шестой уровень LLC, при котором напряжение повышалось до явно избыточных 1,272 В с ростом температуры до 96 градусов Цельсия. Ну а наши попытки протестировать ещё более высокий, пятый уровень стабилизации закончились перегревом процессора спустя уже три минуты теста Prime95.

Разгон нашего экземпляра Intel Core i9-10900K на плате MSI MEG Z490 Godlike закончился точно таким же результатом, как и на флагманских платах ASUS и Gigabyte: 5,0 ГГц одновременно по всем ядрам при 1,225 В и LLC 4.

При этом температура наиболее горячего ядра процессора повышалась до 88 градусов Цельсия, а температура элементов цепей VRM не превысила 60 градусов Цельсия.

На чуть более высокой частоте, 5,1 ГГц, процессору потребовались 1,285 В (LLC 4), но через 3-4 минуты теста он попросту уходил за 100 градусов Цельсия даже под суперкулером. Собирать кастомную СЖО для этих дополнительных 0,1 ГГц было бессмысленно, поэтому мы перешли к проверке оперативной памяти на топовой материнской плате MSI.

Правда, на MEG Z490 Godlike, как и на двух ранее протестированных платах, получить от двух восьмигигабайтных модулей G.Skill TridentZ Neo номиналом 3,6 ГГц с исходными таймингами 18-22-22-42 CR2 более чем 3,8 ГГц при снижении основных таймингов до 18-21-21-43 CR2 и корректировке вторичных задержек нам не удалось. Очевидно, что проблема в модулях памяти, а не в материнских платах.


Теперь проверим производительность системы на MSI MEG Z490 Godlike в номинальном режиме и при разгоне процессора/памяти в нескольких бенчмарках.

Несмотря на тот факт, что серьёзных успехов в разгоне процессора и памяти по очевидным причинам мы не достигли, в большинстве тестов производительность удалось поднять довольно заметно. Флагманская MSI MEG Z490 Godlike имеет на своём борту всё необходимое для создания игровой системы с одной или двумя видеокартами. На плату можно установить самый быстрый игровой процессор, который она обеспечит предельно мощной системой питания с пассивным или активным охлаждением. Выжать максимум из существующего «железа» поможет поддержка пятигигагерцевой оперативной памяти, а также трёх накопителей в портах M.2 на текстолите и ещё пары на карте расширения, отлаженный BIOS с широкими возможностями регулировки напряжений и многочисленные оверклокерские инструменты. На плате имеются три самых быстрых сетевых контроллера, аппаратно улучшенный звуковой процессор, 19 портов USB и прочие всевозможные оптимизации.

Каких-то серьёзных недостатков у MSI MEG Z490 Godlike нам найти не удалось, да и несерьёзных недостатков — тоже. Конечно, к ним можно было бы отнести, например, очень высокую стоимость платы, ограничения набора системной логики Intel Z490 или скудный оверклокерский потенциал процессоров Intel Comet Lake-S. Но только первый из перечисленных можно взвалить на плечи MSI (и то цена на неё находится в рынке), а вторые два от компании не зависят, и с ними MEG Z490 Godlike ничего не может поделать.
