Furi and Haven are completely different games from the same developers. The first is a stylish action game with a gorgeous soundtrack and mostly inventive (and very dangerous) bosses. The second is a romantic adventure in which there are fights too, but not much attention has been paid to them here, and there are no difficulties. If the last game put a lot of emphasis on gameplay and remained exciting thanks to it, then Haven is based primarily on the interaction of characters, but it gets tired much more.

⇡ #Family matters

Yu and Kei are a couple in love who find themselves on an abandoned planet. We learn the details of the prehistory and the universe gradually: the heroes begin to talk about the reasons for their escape, mention a certain Hive and the Exa-Nova organization, discover forgotten buildings on the planet and talk about records in the archives … It turns out that a certain Distributor decided for the guys which pairs would suit them , but because of their love for each other, they didn’t want to agree to the terms, so Yu and Kei decided to run away. To do this, they used a fragile boat, which was severely damaged during the first earthquake.

It is immediately obvious that such a monster can only be defeated by joint actions.

A considerable part of the game will have to be engaged in the repair of transport, exploring the planet in search of abandoned mechanisms and collecting the necessary materials. Characters never go alone – they always do everything together. Haven puts a lot of emphasis on the fact that the heroes are in love: they call the ship “The Nest”, use first-aid kits together, fight side by side with opponents. Well, and most importantly – they constantly communicate, sleep together, hug, kiss, and so on.

Sometimes Yu and Kei are too sentimental in a bad way, but for the most part, their relationship is enjoyable to watch. The design of the characters was done by the artist Koyorin – his recognizable style is unmistakably recognizable, and outwardly the characters are very cute. And you believe even more in what is happening when you hear how great Yu and Kei are voiced – they perfectly convey the awkwardness when pronouncing an unsuccessful joke and other similar trifles, making the characters seem alive.

Kay is great at plants and Yu is a great mechanic.

⇡ #Pair skating

Everything is spoiled by the gameplay, which, when played alone or in co-op mode, does not bring enough pleasure for Haven to keep you in front of the screen for more than ten hours. At first, the ability to slide on the ground reminds of Gravity Rush (even visually they are similar) – it seems that interesting situations and challenges lie ahead. But after half an hour, the game lays out all the cards on the table – nothing new awaits further ahead. The heroes begin to slide better, learn to do somersaults and ride on the “rail” streams leading to high platforms, but the essence remains the same.

First of all, the need to collect resources tires. You need a lot of them – for cooking (hungry teenagers show themselves worse in battles), and for creating first-aid kits, and for using fast travel, and for all kinds of amplifiers. In addition, you need to rid parts of the planet from rust – a red-purple substance with which almost all territories are flooded: you just drive your boots over the nodes, get a pack of resources, and then you can teleport there from the location with the ship.

As the bond between heroes strengthens, their stats increase

Sometimes, to save the site, you need to help the creatures inhabiting the planet. Rather, beat them well, and then “calm down” while they are out. Haven offers a cross between a turn-based combat system and real-time fights – attacks can be made whenever you want (after charging them for a couple of seconds), but no one guarantees that you will have time to hit before the monster. In addition, in fights with several enemies, you cannot choose a target – the heroes attack whoever they want, you just need to decide between a melee or ranged attack.

Later, more interesting possibilities open up, including a joint attack, which is much more powerful than the usual two. This is where food becomes important – if you don’t eat before the outing, the QTE will be more difficult to execute. Although even in such conditions I managed to do it without any problems, and this is at the recommended level of difficulty – there is still an easy one, but Haven is already reluctant to throw up “hopeless” situations.

After the battle, the pacified creatures can, of course, be petted

Then another joint attack appears – while one character puts a block and attracts the enemy’s attention, the other charges a blow and makes it right after the enemy tries to break through the defense. The developers’ desire to show the closeness of the heroes even in battles is commendable, but these mechanics are interesting only at first. Soon you realize that there are not so many creatures, the tactics against them are the same, and when playing alone, you also get a little confused in the buttons, if you are fighting with three or four monsters.

So it turns out that the basic gameplay gets boring too quickly. When you play a game about romantics in love, the last thing you want to do is sadly drive through the same locations and do monotonous things: look for berries for making pies, fight with the same type of creatures and wipe rust from the ground. The best moments in Haven are those in which you don’t need to control the heroes at all. In “The Nest” we observe a couple from the side, flying inside the ship and interacting with surrounding objects, listening to dialogues and being touched over and over again.

Haven wants to give one more chance, try to visit another zone – suddenly something changes there. But in the end you get into it, you see everything the same as in the past, and you lose interest. The episodes in which the game resembles a visual novel are not bad, but everything else leaves a lot to be desired. What an irony – the game about falling in love with all the desire can not be loved.

  • nice-looking and well-voiced characters;
  • new dialogues in calm moments inside the ship is the best part of the game;
  • great soundtrack.

  • monotonous gameplay in monotonous scenery;
  • most of the time you are engaged in collecting resources, which quickly gets bored;
  • fights are boring because of the same type of monsters and a small number of options in battle.

Graphic arts

The visual style is cute, but the environment is too monotonous to admire for over ten hours.

Great music and great sound, Haven certainly doesn’t disappoint in terms of sound.

Single player game

Although there are two main characters in the game, you can play it alone. But do not expect an interesting “co-op for one”, as in some Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons – the second character just runs after you.

Collective game

It is assumed that you will pass Haven with a soul mate. However, the chances are high that she will get bored with the gameplay even faster than you.

General impression

Behind the pleasant visual style is a monotonous game that does not match the level of Furi created by the same people.
