March marks the 140th anniversary of the birth of Valentin Petrovich Vologdin (1881 – 1953) – Russian and Soviet scientist in the field of high-frequency technology, professors
(1921), Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1939), one of organizers of the domestic radio and electrical industry.
Born 22  March 1881 in the village of Kuva, Perm province, in the family of a mining caretaker. In 1892 he entered the Perm Real School, and in 1900 – at the Petersburg Technological Institute,
which he graduated in 1907. After receiving the diploma, he gets a job at the electromechanical plant of the company “N. N. Glebov and Co. “.
Soon Vologdin was invited to Kronstadt officer classes work on over-frequency generators. In the period 1909 – 1912, Valentin Petrovich created the first Russian cars
high frequency powering spark radio stations.
In 1912, Vologdin designed a 2 kW radio generator, which was used in naval radio stations. A year later, the scientist presented a new sample with a power of 6 kW and a frequency of 20
kHz, which began to be used to provide radiotelegraph communication.
In 1915 he developed an original generator for the famous giant liner Ilya Muromets. Vologdin also created a series of high-frequency generators for radio stations, known under
the name of the PIU and OP.
In 1918 Vologdin became one of the scientific leaders Nizhny Novgorod Radio Laboratory (NRL)… In 1922 in the NRL he developed a high-frequency machine with a power of 50 kW at a frequency of 20 kHz, and three years later – a machine with a power of 150 kW.
They were installed at the October radio station in Moscow. With the help of a 150 kW machine, radio communication between Soviet Russia and the countries of Western Europe and the United States was reliably provided for many years. Since 1921

INOologdin designed the world’s first high-voltage mercury rectifiers with a liquid cathode (in 1919 – in glass, in 1930 – powerful rectifiers in a metal
performance), gave a theory of their work and proposed switching circuits. These rectifiers began to be installed at all major radio stations, including the radio station. Comintern (1924).
In November 1922 V.P. Vologdin was appointed a member of the board Low Current Factories Trust; combining this work with activities in the NRL, and later became the director of radio at the Trust. In 1924
year, the radio laboratory of the Trust of Low Current Plants was transferred from Moscow to Leningrad, which united the most talented radio specialists and became Central Radio Laboratory of the country
Outstanding scientists L.I. Mandelstam, N. D. Papaleksi , A.F, Shorin, M.A. Bonch-Bruevich and others. V.P. Vologdin was one of the scientific leaders of the Central Research Laboratory.
Under the leadership of Vologdin, the technology of high-speed soldering with heating by high-frequency currents (1930), as well as the method of surface hardening of steel (1935), which found wide application in
domestic engineering and metallurgy.
Since 1935 he is a professor Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute (LETI)… Since 1947 Vologdin – director Research Institute for the Industrial Application of High Frequency Currents (VNIITVCH),
organized on the basis of his laboratory at LETI and the laboratory of high-frequency electrothermics of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
In 1948, Vologdin was the first to be awarded the Gold Medal. A.S. Popov, he twice won the Stalin Prize of the Second Degree (1943, 1952) and was awarded the Order of Lenin. He has done over 120
