Huawei P40 Pro Smartphone Preview: Eye of the Storm / Smartphones

This is the second flagship of Huawei, coming out in the days of the active stage of a trade war between the United States and China – and, accordingly, under the sanctions of Google. The first, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, reached store shelves slowly and carefully, as if probing the soil. Huawei P40 and P40 Pro are going to break into the traditional mode, even despite the AppGallery instead of Google Play and the inability to somehow put Google Mobile Services – neither officially, nor even in a pirated way. Currently, all paths are blocked. But Huawei does not despair and continues to make impressive gadgets.

Huawei P40 and P40 Pro do not revolutionize in the manner of their predecessors (that the P20 Pro, that the P30 Pro dramatically broke the situation in the world of mobile photography), they follow the path set by the company without sudden movements: a little more advanced cameras, a little more grown up screens, more slightly improved charging, another iteration of the proprietary hardware platform. Another application for the title of the best flagship smartphone generation.

Externally, both the Huawei P40 and the Huawei P40 Pro, which of course we can talk more about, since it was he who fell into the hands of 3DNews, have not changed much – but very much in the spirit of the times. A curved frameless display, glass both front and back, metal edges, iridescent colors … But at the same time, instead of a cutout, there is a front camera in the display surface – in the case of the P40 Pro it’s already double, like the Samsung Galaxy S10 +. And behind, of course, is a huge block with cameras, sensors and a flash – rectangular and black. So it’s accepted now. It doesn’t say that it’s beautiful, but already familiar, yes.

Colors are not as interesting as last year – the fashion for bright shades gradually passes. Huawei P40 will be presented in black and silver cases, and P40 Pro – in black, silver and blue. How they will look will become clear at the presentation, but the Matte Gray P40 Pro that fell into our hands is not defiant, noble and accurate. But also – yes – a little boring.

If we talk about the size of the device, then we are dealing with a standard flagship smartphone today, even, surprisingly, a little more compact than most competitors – thanks to the screen with a diagonal of 6.58 inches. And about Huawei P40 with a 6.1-inch display, there’s nothing to say. It is convenient to hold the smartphone in your hand, but it, as befits a glass gadget with beveled edges, is slippery – it is better to immediately hide it in a regular silicone case. Both models do not have a mini-jack, while the Huawei P40 received protection only in class IP53 (splash protection), while the P40 Pro is protected according to IP68 (you can immerse the whole thing in the water for a short time; you can, but don’t need it).

With the filling, there were also no special surprises. The most anticipated hardware platform with a small bonus is the Kirin 990 5G. Yes, yes, it is this version, as in Huawei Mate Xs, and the manufacturer will not block the 5G modem programmatically – you can check its performance in the 5G test zone. Huawei P40 received 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of flash memory, P40 Pro – 8 and 256 GB, respectively. The memory class is still unknown, but it is hardly a question of the LPDDR5 RAM, but a flash of the UFS 3.0 standard is quite possible. You can expand the volume using a proprietary NanoSD card. According to first impressions, the Huawei P40 Pro works very quickly – however, it was not worth expecting anything else. Moreover, no Google services there slow down the work … well, let’s not talk about sad things, they already said.

The screens on all versions of the model are OLED, but the Pro has it not only larger, but also with a higher resolution, which is unusual for Huawei, which adhered to the rule “only Full HD”: 2640 × 1200 pixels. At the same time, the screen refresh rate reaches 90 Hz – not 120 Hz appearing on the flagships, but also in the spirit of the times. At the same time, there are no visible restrictions on resolution and frequency in various applications.

Huawei would not be itself if it had not shifted all the emphasis in introducing its new flagship smartphone to the camera. True, this year we did not see anything supernatural.

On the left – a picture in normal resolution (12.5 megapixels), on the right – at maximum (50 megapixels)

First of all, the main module was updated (Huawei does not traditionally indicate the authors of the sensor), resolution (from 40 to 50 megapixels) and dimensions (up to 1 / 1.28 inches) grew. A 50-megapixel RYYB sensor is installed in both the P40 and P40 Pro, together with a 26 mm equivalent focal length lens and aperture f /1.9, but in the Pro version this module is equipped with optical stabilization, but in the “normal” version it is not. In this case, pictures are taken by default with a resolution of about 12.5 MP, but if you wish, you can enable the 50-megapixel mode. A couple of examples are above.

Further, there are already some discrepancies. In addition to the 50-megapixel module, the P40 also has the usual wide-angle module with a resolution of 16 megapixels and an 8 megapixel telephoto module, which provides triple optical zoom. The P40 Pro received a 40-megapixel wide-angle “cinematic” camera as in the Mate 30 Pro, as well as a periscopic 12-megapixel module with a fast lens f /3.4, which provides fivefold optical zoom and tenfold hybrid. Like in the P30 Pro, but the resolution has increased, the quality has grown.

It is worth saying that the smartphone Huawei P40 Pro + is also presented, the output of which in Russia is still in question. His, in fact, the only difference was the camera, which provides even greater zoom – up to 100x in digital format in the manner of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, while the P40 Pro stopped at 50x. Alas, I failed to find out any details about the “plus” device before the announcement.

In general, Huawei claims that there is an increase in the quality of photos and videos – first of all, however, due to software and the new AI engine. For example, the P40 camera can reduce glare when shooting through glass, and not only combine several frames into one for the HDR effect or high-quality night shooting, but also remove unnecessary objects from them. How this works – it will become clear in the future, with serial smartphone firmware, while the P40 Pro has quite normal modes. We’ll leave some conclusions regarding the quality of photos and videos (the limit ISO has increased for videos, stabilization has improved, while still being able to write slow-motion video at up to 7680 frames per second).

Examples of shooting on the front camera Huawei P40 Pro

The front camera on the P40 Pro has become dual – along with the main 32-megapixel sensor, a TOF camera is working here. There would be expected, as when shooting on the main unit, video with software bokeh, but no; only photos that were already before. The maximum that smartphone developers have been able to achieve is 4K video on a selfie camera. It’s also not bad, but was it worth it to fence a garden with eating up space on the screen?

Huawei P40 received a battery with a capacity of 3800 mAh, and the P40 Pro with a capacity of 4200 mAh. Already now I can say that with the autonomy of the new “firmware” everything is very good, like the last one, the charge does not go away in a day, even if you turn on the 90 Hz update mode and do not skimp on the brightness of the display. Included with all P40s are chargers with a power of 40 W, which allow you to charge your smartphone in just over an hour. And what’s more, the new flagships also support 40 W wireless charging! If you find her. And yes, this is the record for today.

These are the evolutionary flagships of Huawei, emerging in the midst of an ideal storm – in the midst of sanctions against Huawei, the coronavirus pandemic and the great fever of the world economy. And this announcement, which took place, no matter what, according to the schedule, is very pleased with the very fact of its holding – some stability today will definitely not hurt us.

In Russia, you can pre-order the Huawei P40 Pro and Huawei P40 from April 2, 2020 (with pre-order as a gift, Huawei FreeBuds 3 wireless headphones are offered), and from April 10, smartphones will go on sale. The recommended retail price is 69,999 rubles for the Huawei P40 Pro and 49,999 rubles for HuaweiP40
