Introduced Varjo VR-3 and XR-3 virtual and augmented reality headsets with dual displays

Varjo has announced a new generation of VR-3 and XR-3 virtual and augmented reality headsets, respectively. Compared to previous models, the new items will provide higher resolution across the entire field of view, and built-in eye tracking and hand tracking systems will make interaction with the virtual space more comfortable.

Varjo’s VR-3 and XR-3 headsets are capable of producing a very clear picture when connected to a computer. Headsets use two displays for each eye. The developers placed a small display with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels in the center of the field of view, as well as an additional larger display with a resolution of 2880 × 2720 pixels in the peripheral area.

This approach allows for an extremely clear image when the user is looking in front of him, and more standard for peripheral vision. Legacy Varjo headsets took a similar approach, but used lower resolution displays. The updated Bionic Display system provides a horizontal viewing angle of 115 °, significantly more than most lower-end consumer headsets. Both headsets shown use the same displays with a 90Hz refresh rate.

The main difference between the presented novelties is that the XR-3 design provides stereoscopic cameras and LIDAR sensors, which turn the device into an AR headset that is capable of combining a live video stream of the surrounding space with virtual objects.

It should be noted that Varjo still does not offer its headsets to the consumer market, and only legal entities can purchase them. The XR-3 is priced at $ 5495, and you will have to pay $ 1495 for a one-year software support subscription. The VR-3 model will cost $ 3195 and an additional $ 795 per year for a similar subscription. Pre-orders are being accepted now, with first deliveries expected to begin next year.
