The state corporation Roskosmos reports that the International Space Station (ISS) has done without an evasion maneuver from the former US military satellite BRICSat-2.
Last Saturday, September 12, it became known about the threat of a collision between the ISS and the BRICSat-2 spacecraft, which has already completed its work and is currently classified as space debris. It was said that the evasive maneuver of the station from this satellite would be carried out tonight – September 14, in the period from 00:00 to 01:00 Moscow time.
However, then the specialists of the automated warning system for dangerous situations in near-earth space (ASPOS OKP) came to the conclusion that BRICSat-2 poses no danger to the International Space Station.
“Based on the analytics of the data obtained, the ISS flight control groups decided not to carry out an evasion maneuver.“, – said in the message of Roscosmos.
Note that the named satellite was launched in the summer of 2019 using the Falcon Heavy launch vehicle. Its operator was the US Navy.
“The Russian side has repeatedly drawn the partners’ attention to new threats in outer space that arise in connection with the creation of low-orbit satellite constellations, and proposes to develop the necessary interaction regulations“, – adds Roskosmos.
