It became known that it will be more difficult to observe the maximum activity of the Quadrantid meteor shower on the night of January 3 due to the too bright moon. This was reported by the TASS news agency with reference to the press service of the Moscow Planetarium.
Despite the unfavorable conditions for observation, it will be possible to see the starfall from all over Russia, and it will reach its maximum activity on the night of January 3. It is expected that during the period of maximum activity, up to 110 meteors per hour can be seen in the sky.
“Observation conditions Quadrantid are unfavorable. The waning, almost full moon (the full moon was on December 30) will make it difficult to admire the starfall, as it will shine over the southeastern horizon all night“, – reported the press service of the Moscow Planetarium.
Astronomers recommend that people who still want to try to see the starfall under the lunar illumination look towards the northeastern horizon of the sky. In this part of the sky, the Quadrantid radiant is located, which is the area of meteor departure. According to available data, it will be located in the constellation Bootes.
Recall that the Quadrantida stream got its name from the Wall Quadrant constellation, which is not used in modern astronomy. Earlier it was reported that during maximum activity, the speed of the stream of meteors can reach 40 km / s. It is expected that the starfall will be clearly visible to the inhabitants of Siberia, since during the period of maximum activity of the stream in the region, a significant cooling and no precipitation are predicted. This makes the sky observation conditions more favorable.
