Lenovo introduced the supercomputer to the Irkutsk oil company

Lenovo has completed a project to implement the HPC Irkutsk Oil Company (INC) cluster. The aim of the project is to strengthen the IT infrastructure to accelerate geological exploration.

Irkutsk Oil Company is a large independent producer of hydrocarbons in Russia. INC. The group of companies is engaged in geological prospecting, exploration and production of hydrocarbons at
deposits and sections of subsoil in Eastern Siberia – in the Irkutsk region, the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) and the Krasnoyarsk region.

Prior to the implementation of the project, INC specialists used graphical stations that performed geological engineering calculations, but they have limitations on the number
using digital deposit models related to their execution. The use of these solutions was ineffective in terms of the time required to implement them
individual station calculations. Complex models with a large number of cells were calculated over a long period of time, which led to low economic decision making. appeared
the need for a single geographically distributed system.

Lenovo experts have suggested connecting each workstation’s graphical workstations to a single HPC cluster that will process a large amount of data. communication between
Lenovo and INC, the logistics, delivery and installation of the equipment were carried out by the Siberian Information Technology Center (ISIB).

Lenovo Computer Infrastructure Computing Pack is equipped with 6 GPGPUs (GPUs), 120
CPU cores, 3 840 – CUDA, 30 720 – Tensor. The total memory of 2666 MHz TruDDR4 is 1 152 GB, and the processor – 9.6 GB.

With the introduction of the supercomputer, the Irkutsk Oil Company has increased its processing capacity. INC experts point to a 7-fold increase in individual model performance. In addition,
The HPC cluster provided system flexibility and scalability as well as simplified maintenance of 19 fields.

Now, depending on the complexity of the task, professionals can use the resources of both the individual node and the entire cluster. Therefore, HPC was able to lift the size limits
digital models.
