LG Chem will begin supplying batteries for Tesla from South Korea

Korean company LG Chem already supplies Tesla traction batteries for electric vehicles assembled in Shanghai. The growing demand for Tesla products forces the latter to increase the volume of purchases of batteries, and LG Chem will reorient one of its enterprises in South Korea to service Tesla orders. According to reports, Tesla is going to establish the production of traction batteries at a plant in California. The company now receives them from the Chinese company LG Chem, and the electric vehicles of the Shanghai assembly can also be equipped with batteries manufactured by the Chinese company CATL. Initially, Tesla was content with the production capabilities of an enterprise in Nevada, but now the demand for electric cars dictates the need to increase battery production by all suppliers.

Now Reuters, citing informed sources, reports that this year LG Chem will establish the production of traction batteries for Tesla electric vehicles at a plant in South Korea, expanding the geography of their production. Tesla is pushing toward this step by the growing demand for electric cars, and other battery suppliers will also have to increase production for the needs of the American customer.

Over the past quarter, Tesla produced 82,272 electric vehicles (6,326 copies of Model S / X and 75,946 copies of Model 3 / Y), 90,650 electric vehicles were shipped (10,600 copies of Model S / X and 80,050 copies of Model 3 / Y). This is significantly higher than the expectations of analysts who called the bar at 72,000 electric vehicles. The company was not even prevented by a long stop of the main conveyor in Fremont, due to the need for self-isolation.

In a recent application to the German authorities, Tesla listed the changes regarding its own plans to build an enterprise in the vicinity of Berlin. The design production volume of 500 thousand electric vehicles per year is indicated in the form of “from 100 thousand units”, the production of power plants will be located in a separate building, and it was decided to completely abandon the production of traction batteries at this enterprise. On the other hand, a place for a test track will be provided on the territory of the enterprise. The foundation is already being laid, although Tesla has not yet received all the permits. Construction is scheduled for completion by March next year, and the release of Model Y crossovers in Germany will be launched by July.
