Time after time I go back to the past in my head. What have I done wrong? Or maybe it’s not about me? At what point did it all start to fall apart? Have we screwed up the foundation? Or was it just a model built instead of a real building? Not life, but decoration. But what if you recreate it? .. The minced meat, of course, cannot be turned back, but you should at least try to fix the meat grinder.

⇡ #Park of culture and rest

After walking through a small labyrinth that sets up an exposition, immerses in the world of the game and explains the basic ways of interacting with the environment, we open the door and get to the first layout under the San Franciscan Nights of the great Gabor Szabo.

Layout inside layout inside layout inside

Layout inside layout inside layout inside …

A similar technique – acquaintance with a new stage [отношений] to impeccably selected music and then leaving you in silence, one on one with riddles – will be applied in each chapter. And it works flawlessly every time, like everything related to the audiovisual part – if, of course, you do not hate low-poly stylistics. The layouts look great on any scale, the musical inserts are performed, I repeat, brilliantly, the voice acting is excellent – the story unfolds mostly in the form of a dialogue between two characters.

And this story, as you might have already guessed, is devoted to the relationship between the characters – born out of a joint love of drawing, they bloom, fertilized by a carefree separate life, and then … Then cracks begin – both in relationships and in the gameplay.

⇡ #Gulliver’s Adventures

Now we get to the heart of Maquette – its unusual gameplay. This is a classic puzzle game in which you need to solve one problem after another to progress further. Sometimes you need to change the direction of thinking quite abruptly, but the essence remains the same – everything here is based on recursion.

Things can have many uses here.

Things can have many uses here.

Almost always in the center of the “landscape” there is a model of the surrounding space, which this very world exactly duplicates. You can carry key objects inside it from the outside – and they change their scale accordingly. We put the token for the entrance to the amusement park inside the layout – and we find its duplicate outside – of gigantic size. Likewise, taking advantage of the fact that the layout is actually inside the layout, these items can be reduced. You can make a bridge out of a key of regular sizes, and then take this key – and reduce it so that they can open the small door of the house inside layout. Further more. In the literal sense of the word – at some point you will have to be in external space – to maneuver between the blades of grass and climb into the mouse hole.

The story is told to us not only in straightforward text, but also in small - very elegant - sketches

The story is told to us not only in straightforward text, but also in small – very elegant – sketches

For the creators of the game, the studio Graceful Decay, this is the debut work – and, probably, therefore, they lacked the experience to bring their excellent idea to shine. The complexity of the riddles is constantly jumping – some are solved on the fly, some are baffled, and forcing them to spend a lot of time moving in space to test various hypotheses. But this is not a big problem for a lover of puzzles, especially since the frankly illogical and unsolvable problems of Maquette before usdoes not. Also, regular changes in the rules did not seem to me a big problem – the game constantly asks to change the way of thinking, partially discarding what we learned earlier (however, recursion as the main technique will not go anywhere). For a fairly short-lived work, several “worlds” differing in their laws can even be considered a merit.

Oddly enough, this is not the beginning

Oddly enough, this is not the beginning

But at some point, the connection between the narrative and the gameplay breaks: the atmosphere and the environment change following the changes in the relations of the heroes, but the semantic load of the actions is slowly melting away. Yes, there will be a couple of rather sharp – and illogical against the background of the general mood – offshoots, but in the end Maquette still turns into a traditional puzzle game, where the gameplay is separate, and the plot simply stimulates solving problems. Moreover, he stumbles over bugs and is far from ideal level design: in places you can get stuck between objects or not be able to climb onto an important object – our invisible protagonist is very clumsy and slow. Fortunately, you can save at any time – I recommend using this option so as not to replay large pieces.

The idea of composing your “500 Days of Summer” from recursive puzzles at first seems very inspiring – and this feeling keeps coming back in the process of playing, which can both throw good food for the mind and move. But Maquette does not succeed in becoming something more than an elegantly executed trinket – the gap between form and content interferes. However, this trinket can still take a place on your shelf for fond memories – especially if the story told by its authors touches the strings of your soul and, possibly, helps you come to terms with something unfulfilled.

  • original concept of recursive puzzles;
  • excellent visual and sound performance;
  • Touching story…

  • … which may seem incomplete convincing;
  • the gap between form and content;
  • technical imperfection and sometimes dreary tasks.

Graphic arts

Exquisitely executed and filled with details “models” of houses, palaces and parks – and they look great on any scale.

There is a minimum of beautiful and natural music, but it is extremely appropriate. Most of the time, we listen to our steps and the sounds of interaction with objects.

Single player game

A puzzle game that does not change the general focus, but regularly throws up the need to learn new techniques and change the way of thinking.

Collective game

Not provided.

General impression

The story and gameplay complement each other well at first, but at some point their paths still diverge. Hmm, what if this is a subtle allusion to plot events? ..

Score: 7,5/10
