⇡ # What’s new in Russia and in the world?
Before plunging into the whirlpool of events of the past week, I suggest admiring the fresh cosmic beauty from NASA. A new Hubble image of the week shows the galaxy NGC 34 in the constellation Cetus. It was formed as a result of the collision of two spiral galaxies – in the process of merging, they experience a strong influence of gravitational interaction, this explains such bizarre shapes in the images.
The spiral structure is clearly visible in the central part of NGC 34, and irregular smoky regions can be seen on the outskirts. Do not forget to look at the larger version of the image, it shows the details better.
By the way, NASA recently published on its blog a fascinating article with plans to explore the Moon by the end of this decade. In short, two astronauts will be landed in the region of the Moon’s South Pole in 2024: a man and a woman. This will begin a new stage in the exploration of the Moon, which in six years should turn into a full-scale geological exploration mission. Then, about once a year, new members of the mission will arrive on the moon, and the automatic reconnaissance rover VIPER (Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover) will help people in the search for water and mineral deposits. Its delivery will not happen immediately, but it is planned as a commercial mission. In general, I strongly recommend all fans of news from space to read the full news from the link above – there is still a lot of interesting things.
Well, if there are not enough minerals on the moon, then there is at least one celestial body in the solar system, the development of which already promises incredible benefits. According to a new study, the total cost of the fossils trapped in the bowels of the asteroid Psyche is estimated at quadrillion US dollars. This object is located in the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, at a distance of 370 million kilometers from Earth and consists of iron and nickel. Moreover, it accounts for 1% of the mass of all bodies of the asteroid belt. If we assume that Psyche is entirely composed of iron and nickel, then its value at current earthly prices can reach 10 quintillion US dollars ($ 10,000,000,000,000,000,000). And to check whether this is true or not, humanity will be able to very soon – in 2022 NASA plans to send an automatic research station to the asteroid, which will reach its goal in 2026.
But, perhaps, the central topic of the past week was a new “battle” between NVIDIA and AMD. The latter, as promised, officially presented the Radeon six-thousandth series, namely the RX 6800, RX 6800 XT and RX 6900 XT. These new products are built on the RDNA 2 architecture, which is also used in the next generation game consoles. AMD itself promises a two-fold increase in performance over the previous generation – at least when comparing the Radeon RX 6900 XT with the Radeon RX 5700 XT. At the presentation, AMD compared the performance of its Radeon RX 6800 XT with a competitor from NVIDIA – the GeForce RTX 3080, it turned out that the new Radeon can offer a similar, and sometimes better frame rate with less power consumption. After the presentation, other test results were published by AMD itself, in which its video cards were again stronger than their counterparts from NVIDIA. There are no real tests yet, but even without them it is clear that we will have very interesting comparative reviews and heated debates on the forums. Like the good old days!
It remains to add that the Radeon RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT accelerators in the reference design will start selling on November 18 for $ 579 and $ 649, respectively. AMD’s flagship Radeon RX 6900 XT will go on sale on December 8 for $ 999. However, our readers in the comments express their fears that the start of sales may turn out to be as scandalous as that of NVIDIA.
Last week, sales of GeForce RTX 3070 started in Russia. Although NVIDIA
promised to fight bots and resellers, the situation with the availability of video cards at the start of sales did not improve at all. The reference versions of video cards of all 3000 series models were sold through the official online store of DiHouse on the AliExpress online platform. They ended almost instantly. If this was the very fight against speculators, then the manufacturer can immediately count the defeat by knockout. According to the results of the first day of sales, it turned out that only 130 copies were sold in Russia, and most of them then appeared on Avito at very inflated prices.
As for non-standard solutions, they were not available in all the announced stores, and it was often impossible to buy them separately, only as part of a new gaming PC. NVIDIA is criticized by all and sundry, but the manufacturer cannot solve the problem, at least for now. Well, let’s see how AMD handles that. But I would immediately bet on the option “no way” if some bookmaker offered such an event.
Sony may find itself in a similar situation at the time of the start of sales of the PlayStation 5. Representatives of Sony Interactive Entertainment are seriously concerned that not everyone will be able to buy the PlayStation 5 on the day of the announcement, which is scheduled for November 12. It turned out that in the first 12 hours
collecting pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 in the USthe company has processed the same number of applications as in the first 12 weeks after the announcement of the PlayStation 4. At the same time, there is every reason to believe that the total circulation of PS5 will quickly exceed the number of sold consoles of the previous generation. And the PlayStation 4, let me remind you, has sold over 100 million copies.
Unexpected bad news came to us from Poland. The release of the long-awaited blockbuster Cyberpunk 2077 from the studio CD Projekt RED has been postponed again, but this time the postponement is quite small by only 21 days – until December 10, 2020. As the main reason, the developer named the difficulties in preparing nine versions of the game – for PC, consoles of the current and next generations, as well as the streaming platform Google Stadia. Due to the upcoming release, many employees have to work overtime. But for this they receive not only money and fame, but also real threats. The developers were in fact threatened by angry fans. This was announced by senior game designer Andrzej Zawadzki on my Twitter… According to him, some fans took the news of the postponement of the release of Cyberpunk 2077 too close to their hearts and sank into threats to the developers. This is the downside of being in close contact with your audience.
Despite the pandemic and a natural decrease in activity in terms of mergers and acquisitions, the end of the year is becoming very busy with such events. On Thursday, Sberbank (formerly Sberbank) announced the purchase of Rambler. Sberbank became a shareholder of Rambler Group back in 2019, when it invested in the company in exchange for 46.5 percent of its shares. The amount of the deal was not named then, but experts estimated it at between 9 and 11 billion rubles. In July 2020, Sberbank increased its stake to 55%, and last week completely bought Rambler Group from Alexander Mamut.
Well, since we started talking about losses, we cannot fail to mention Beeline, which lost almost every tenth subscriber in a year. At the end of the third quarter of 2020, the operator recorded a 7% decrease in revenue compared to the same period last year. One of the main reasons was a sharp decrease in international roaming revenue, as well as a 21% decline in revenue from content services. Subscriber base “Beeline” for the year collapsed by 9%. The company attributes this to an insufficient level of perception of the quality of communication and service in the past. What is the wording, eh! Translated into human language, this means people are running away from intrusive paid subscriptions and sluggish support services. However, there is hope that the churn of subscribers will have a sobering effect on the operator.
Well, let’s finish with Apple’s news bundle. In October, the company crossed the 1 billion active iPhone milestone. However, for some time now (namely, since 2018) Apple itself has ceased to report exact numbers of device sales, so the record was recorded by analyst Neil Cybart. It is significant that this happened even before the start of sales of the iPhone 12. However, they may not be all right. The first users complain about some problems, namely, the paint peels off quickly, the back panel cracks, and you can cut yourself on the edge. However, soon we will be able to confirm or deny this on our own experience – a sample of the new generation iPhone is already in our test laboratory.
Well, Apple itself may lose more than half a billion dollars following a lawsuit against the VirnetX patent troll. A federal jury in Tyler, Texas, ruled that Apple must pay VirnetX $ 502.8 million in royalties for its VPN on Demand feature. VirnetX, which does not have its own development, but is actively involved in litigation with technology companies, initially demanded $ 700 million. Apple insisted on compensation in the amount of 19 cents per device, which would total approximately $ 113 million. But the jury appointed the amount based on 84 cents for one device.
It is worth noting that a few months ago Apple had to pay the same VirnetX $ 454 million. And the new decision does not mean an increase in the amount of payments, but a new payment in addition to the previous one. The company, however, has the right to appeal and it will definitely use it. One thing is clear: the company from Cupertino will definitely not be able to avoid the payment.
