New laptops with AMD SmartShift technology will no longer be this year

According to Frank Azor, chief architect of the gaming solutions division at AMD, this year you should no longer wait for new laptops using SmartShift technology. The first and only laptop to receive this technology was the Dell G5 15 SE.

Recall that SmartShift technology dynamically changes the power and frequencies of the central and graphic processors for a more optimal distribution of computing load. Due to this, performance increases in various applications.

When asked by one of the Twitter users about why only Dell introduced a laptop with this technology, and whether to expect similar from other manufacturers, Azor answered the following:

“This is new technology and Dell was the first company to decide to use it. No other SmartShift notebooks are expected this year. However, the team is working to offer a wider selection of systems in 2021. “, – wrote the head of the Gaming Solutions division of AMD.

Resource PCWorld Azor explained that the technology used in the Dell G5 15 SE laptop dynamically redistributes the computing load and power consumption between the Ryzen 5 4600H CPU and the discrete Radeon RX 5600M GPU. Due to this, in some individual games it is possible to achieve up to 14% increase in speed.

Azor’s statement also means that this year you should not wait for new laptops built exclusively on the basis of AMD central and GPUs. According to him, one of the reasons for this is the laptop manufacturers themselves. Although they were surprised at the performance of the Ryzen 4000 processors, they could not do anything about it, since they compiled “road maps” of their future products a year before their presentation. And this is a very common practice.

Nevertheless, it should be added that computers are not the only platform that uses AMD CPUs and GPUs. The next-generation game consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are also built on the basis of the CPU and GPU “red”. Sony has already confirmed that its set-top box will use SmartShift technology. Both consoles should appear on sale by the end of 2020.
