BQ brings flagship chips to its budget smartphones slowly, never introducing everything at once. But the BQ Magic O (BQ-6464L) makes a serious breakthrough in this direction: there is a screen with minimal frames (well, that was already in the same Magic S), and a hole in the screen instead of a notch-notch, and a triple rear camera , and … the lack of a mini-jack.

The emphasis in BQ Magic O was made primarily on design, but the manufacturer did not ignore the specifications either: there is a Mediatek Helio P23 hardware platform with 3 GB of RAM, a large LCD (6.35-inch diagonal) with HD + resolution and a battery with a capacity of 3900 mAh, and a triple camera should take its own not only with the number of modules.

It’s also worth mentioning that along with Magic O, which can be called the conditional “flagship” among the brand’s smartphones, the youngest model of this series is also released – Magic E: with a dual camera, a small battery (2950 mAh), an ordinary a cutout instead of a corner hole, but also very fashionable at a price of six thousand rubles. Magic O at the start is offered for 8,490 rubles. Let’s see what is included in this price.

BQ-6464L Magic O – filling information according to CPU Z application

⇡ #Design, software and ergonomics

I already mentioned the main feature of BQ Magic O a couple of times at the beginning of the material. Well, again: there is no cut-out, instead of it there is a hole in the corner of the screen, almost not eating away the place on the status bar. The front camera, however, is equipped with a rather noticeable black border – it was absolutely perfect to fit the lens in the manner of the same Samsung Galaxy S20 at the BQ. Nevertheless, such a decision, in my opinion, still looks fresher than a cutout of any shape – large or “droplet”. Especially in this segment, where Magic O, in fact, has no analogues.

The back is also not without grace – it is made of plastic, but to distinguish it from the glass by eye is quite difficult. To the touch, however, it’s simple, but still it’s worth remembering that we are talking about a gadget in the price category “up to 10 thousand rubles” and not be judged strictly.

The case is made in one of three rather interesting colors: dark blue, dark red or gradient “ultraviolet”. Everyone looks spectacular, we tested turned dark red BQ Magic O. The tendency to replace standard black-silver-gold smartphones, even inexpensive ones, cannot fail to please with color ones.

Dimensions BQ Magic O – 159.1 × 75.2 × 9 mm. This is a rather large and weighty gadget, but it fits into your pocket without any problems; holding it with one hand is also quite simple. The back is rounded at the edges, so that the fingers rest on the body naturally. And by the way, the smartphone does not slip from uneven surfaces – plastic still is not as slippery as glass.

I noticed two curious ergonomic solutions in BQ Magic O. The first is a dual light and proximity sensor on the upper edge (there simply wasn’t any place on the front panel for it). The second is the lack of an analog audio jack. For this, it’s impossible to come up with reasonable explanations: the rejection of the mini-jack is not compensated by moisture protection and is not explained by any special subtlety of the case. No, they removed it because they could – well, because it is a sign of flagships. Here are just smartphone users for 8.5 thousand rubles, most are not too tuned to buy wireless headphones. The kit for compensation contains an adapter from USB Type-C to mini-jack, but in any case the option “listen to music through wired headphones and charge the device at the same time” is not available for BQ Magic O customers.

The fingerprint scanner is located in the center of the back panel, it lies clearly under the index finger. This is a capacitive sensor, it works quickly and with a minimum reject rate. If desired, you can use the method of user identification using face recognition – this uses the front camera.

BQ Magic O runs on the Android 9 Pie operating system with minimal changes: there is a familiar set of preinstalled software, and some basic applications like the camera have been rewritten. The OS is fast enough, and all preinstalled applications can be deleted if desired.

⇡ #Display and sound

BQ Magic O received a rather large display by the standards of its class – the diagonal is 6.35 inches, the matrix is IPS. The resolution is 1560 × 720 (HD +). The density of pixels, respectively, 271 ppi.

The viewing angles of the screen matrix are not bad, there is a polarization layer. The multi-touch screen responds to five simultaneous touches.

The measured brightness level of the display BQ Magic O – 376 cd / m2contrast ratio 1136: 1.

The display customization options are standard – they mainly relate to the interface and brightness. The color rendering of Magic O does not allow changing, you can only rely on the factory setting.

BQ Magic O, color gamut in automatic mode. Gray Triangle - sRGB Coverage, White Triangle - Magic O Coverage

The color gamut roughly corresponds to the sRGB area, but is slightly biased. The average gamma is increased relative to the norm – 2.61 with nervous behavior of the curves. The color temperature is very high – fluctuations from 8,000 to 11,000 K. The average DeltaE deviation for the extended Color Checker palette (shades of gray + a wide range of color shades) is 9.08 (at a rate of 3.00).

BQ Magic O lacks a mini-jack, but this is at least offset by a complete adapter. The smartphone sounds approximately as you expect from a device of its class. Wireless data transfer does not support LDAC or aptX profiles. An external speaker, located on the lower edge of the case, stands out for volume – it will not be easy to miss a call.

⇡ #Iron and performance

BQ Magic O is based on the Mediatek Helio P23 platform. This is not a new budget-level system-on-chip – introduced back in 2017, it is based on eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores: four conditionally high-performance ones operate at a clock frequency of 2.0 GHz, four conditionally energy-efficient ones operate at a frequency of 1, 65 GHz. Graphics controller – ARM Mali-G71 MP2 with a clock frequency of 770 MHz. The chip is manufactured using 16-nanometer technology

This solution works with the Vulkan API and allows you to rely on the fact that the vast majority of applications that you find on Google Play will run on your smartphone. The level of performance is about the same as you expect from a budget smartphone.

There is enough RAM in this case – three gigabytes is enough for a smartphone with an HD-resolution screen. Applications open relatively quickly (I note the speed of the camera application separately), it’s comfortable to navigate the operating system. Simple games are launched.

With throttling, BQ Magic O has no serious problems. During the 15-minute session of the CPU Throttling Test, frequencies sagged to 81% of the maximum, and in the first half of the test, that is, the dynamics are generally stable. The average level of performance at the same time – 75 GIPS.

The smartphone is equipped with 32 GB of flash memory. This, of course, is not much, but a microSD card slot with a capacity of up to 128 GB is available. The slot is hybrid, for the sake of additional memory you will have to sacrifice a second SIM card.

⇡ #Communications and wireless communications

BQ Magic O uses two nano-SIM cards with one radio module, both slots work with LTE. The built-in modem provides support for Category 4 LTE, the download speed can be done at a maximum speed of 150 Mbps, and the transfer rate is 50 Mbps. All ranges necessary for the correct operation of networks in Russia are supported.

BQ Magic O, a slot for SIM cards and a microSD memory card

The set of wireless modules is almost exhaustive: dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11 a / b / g / n), Bluetooth 4.2, NFC with support for Google Pay. BQ Magic O in this regard is quite relevant. The navigation module works with GPS and GLONASS.

⇡ #Camera

BQ Magic O set a record among budget smartphones – a triple camera is installed here. True, I did not succeed in figuring out why the third module was needed.

The main – 13-megapixel Sony IMX214 with a lens aperture ƒ/ 2.0 – needed for all shooting modes, this is the main camera of the smartphone. The second – a two-megapixel lens with an unnamed aperture lens – serves to help in portrait mode with background blur. But the purpose of the third – with a resolution of 0.3 megapixels – could not be determined. Optical zoom or special macro mode are not available in Magic O.

BQ Magic O Camera Application Interface

The camera application, as I noted above, opens quickly. The interface – compared to what we saw in the latest smartphones of the company – has not changed, the set of modes is the same: video, photo, blur the background (works both in portrait and subject), “beautiful face” (shooting with a beautifier, previously called “beauty photo”), night mode and manual mode with the ability to independently enter shooting parameters. There is no possibility of shooting with HDR.

On the left – a portrait in the “blur” mode, on the right – in the “beautiful face” mode with the maximum use of the beauty modifier

Above, you can see examples of portrait shooting of BQ Magic O with the use of a built-in beauty machine, which suggests flexible settings: you can adjust skin smoothing, eye size and face thickness. But, unlike the same mode in BQ Aurora SE, blurring in this mode does not turn on, the object does not separate from the background. In the blur mode, this separation, by the way, is rather clumsy – along with the background “under the distribution” the object itself partially falls.

BQ Magic O offers a night mode, but it’s not easy to distinguish between pictures taken in it and in normal mode. Multi-frame gluing does not occur, the picture is taken instantly – and it was not possible to notice either the expanded dynamic range, noise reduction, or increased detail.

BQ Magic O can shoot video in Full HD resolution at up to 30 frames per second.

Under normal lighting conditions, acceptable autofocus performance can be noted (it is slow, but more or less tenacious), natural color rendition and weak dynamic range. The sharpness is average – and not at the edges of the frame, as often happens, but in the center. At dusk, the smartphone allows you to make fairly sharp shots; in the dark, even in the “night” mode, it’s not easy to get un lubricated frames from Magic O. But probably.

5 megapixel front camera with aperture lens ƒ/ 2.2 didn’t receive either autofocus or flash, but like the back module, it can shoot both with blurring the background and with the beautiful one. The quality of the photo is quite good.

⇡ #Offline work

BQ Magic O is equipped with a non-removable battery capacity of 14.82 Wh (3900 mAh, 3.8 V). For a smartphone with a 6.35-inch screen, this is perhaps not a luxury, but a means of survival. Thanks to the capacious battery, the smartphone can hold out on a single charge daylight – no fuss in the middle of the day in search of an outlet.

However, in our traditional test with HD-video playback, at maximum brightness, with the wireless modules turned on and active updates, BQ Magic O proved to be exactly the same as the Aurora SE – it withstood about six and a half hours. The result is average.

The port used for charging is USB Type-C. The kit includes charging for 5 A and 2 V – with it, the smartphone battery can be charged in about two hours. Note the ability to charge third-party devices using BQ Magic O – the smartphone can “distribute” the charge, playing the role of an external battery.

⇡ #Conclusion

BQ Magic O is primarily a “mod”, the ability to stand out when buying a budget device. Refusal of a cutout, spectacular colors of the case, a triple rear camera – not what we are used to, considering gadgets for 8-9 thousand rubles. Of the other features of Magic O, we note a good quality of shooting in daylight conditions, a large display and a capacious battery.

Advantages:

  • quite smooth work;
  • decent front camera;
  • bright design, lack of cutout;
  • possibility of use as a power bank;
  • there is NFC.

Disadvantages:

  • average quality of shooting on the main camera;
  • no mini-jack;
  • a specifically tuned and not too bright display;
  • the slot for the memory card is combined with the slot for micro-SIM.
