According to Light Reading, such large companies as Nokia, Oracle and Sony have decided not to participate in the MWC 2021 exhibition, which will be held in person at the end of June in Barcelona. Companies are not convinced that the epidemiological situation is safe enough and do not want to endanger their employees and visitors to the exhibition.
Nokia stated in an email sent directly to Light Reading: “After careful consideration, Nokia decided not to physically attend Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2021. The health of our employees, customers and partners is of the utmost importance to us. Given the international nature of the event and the global rollout of the vaccine, which is still in its infancy, we made the informed decision to participate in a virtual event instead. We understand that the GSMA is planning a number of online events and look forward to working with it to understand how we can participate. “…
Companies such as Oracle and Sony have made similar claims. Ericsson also refused to participate in the exhibition. Light Reading has contacted several other tech companies such as Intel, Lenovo, Qualcomm, and LG. They said they have not yet made a decision to participate in the MWC 2021 in Barcelona.
GSMA, the organizer of MWC, expressed its respect for the decision of companies that refused to participate in offline events. She reported that the virtual online platform will provide support to people who are physically unable to attend the MWC 2021. The GSMA also reiterated that it will take a number of strict measures to ensure the health of the conference participants.
