⇡ # What’s new in Russia and in the world?
Judging by the number of important announcements and high-profile news, then we have experienced the first truly autumn week this year. So this time we will do without beautiful pictures from space, and get straight to the point. Early Monday morning NVIDIA officially announced the purchase of mobile processor maker Arm from Japanese holding company SoftBank. The deal amounted to $ 40 billion – this is the largest amount this year, which for various reasons was not very rich in mergers and acquisitions. Under the agreement of the parties, NVIDIA will pay a total of $ 21.5 billion in shares to SoftBank, as well as $ 12 billion in cash, including $ 2 billion at the time of the agreement. In addition, SoftBank can receive up to $ 5 billion in additional payments in cash or in the form of NVIDIA shares, taking into account Arm’s future profits. Plus NVIDIA will pay $ 1.5 billion to Arm employees.
The final signing of the deal may take place in exactly one and a half years – this is how long it will take for the regulators of the EU, UK, China and the United States to check for compliance with antitrust laws.
According to NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, Arm will assume the role of a division of the company, but retain its headquarters in the UK and “will continue to use its open technology licensing model, while remaining neutral with its customers.” And the first post-purchase challenge will be “integrating NVIDIA technology into Arm’s vast network.” In addition, NVIDIA plans to build a new research center in Cambridge that will specialize in artificial intelligence technologies.
According to experts, the deal is beneficial for both parties. Softbank itself bought Arm in 2016 for $ 32 billion, and is now selling it at a profit, although the development of Arm under Softbank has not been as active as all interested parties would like. For example, over the past four years, NVIDIA shares have risen 10 times, while Arm has risen only 25%. The Arm purchase increases NVIDIA’s already huge influence, so it’s no surprise that the deal is disappointing among many companies, most notably Qualcomm and Samsung, which are both NVIDIA and Arm clients and will now depend on one player. Well, earlier, if you remember, Apple was seriously considering buying Arm, but refused due to possible antitrust proceedings. However, NVIDIA itself assures that, like no one else, it is interested in retaining Arm customers and increasing their number, because this ultimately provides the profit for which the companies exist.
But there are also special cases – for example, heavily sanctioned by Huawei. So, the deal could jeopardize the cooperation of the Chinese manufacturer with Arm – such concerns are expressed by British politicians led by one of the founders of Arm.
Apple, which had to abandon its takeover of Arm a few years ago, made what may have been the strangest announcement in its history last week. Strange because the iPhone 12 was not on it, and the presenters diligently pretended that it was necessary. However, even without the iPhone, there were enough new products. The first of the new gadgets is Apple Watch Series 6, which is equipped with a sensor that detects the level of oxygen in the blood. In case you’re not in the know, a drop in oxygen levels is one of the first signs of COVID-19, so perhaps this is how Apple responded to the pandemic. This pleasure is still not cheap, in Russia the price starts from 36,990 rubles for the 40-mm version in an aluminum case, and from 39,490 rubles for the 44-mm version.
The good news is that more affordable Watch SEs are introduced alongside the Apple Watch Series 6. In Russia, they will cost 24,990 rubles for the most affordable modification. And from a functional point of view, they are similar to the Watch Series 3: there is fall detection, there is a compass, there is an always-on altimeter, and the case is protected from water. In general, a good option for those who were looking towards older Apple Watch models.
The next item in the presentation is the iPad Air 4 and the updated budget iPad. The new “airy” iPad is very similar to iPad Pro and is compatible with all accessories to it. It has the same sharp, angular body, thin bezels around the display, and the display itself is a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina IPS matrix with a resolution of 2360 × 1640 pixels. The fingerprint sensor has been preserved – now it is integrated into the power button at the top. Inside the iPad Air 4 there is an Apple A14 Bionic system-on-chip (for which a 5nm process technology is declared) with a six-core central processor. But most importantly, future owners of the iPad Air 4 will be able to use it in conjunction with the Apple Magic Keyboard, which costs $ 299.
For about the same money (okay, a little more – $ 329) you can buy a new affordable iPad that is based on the somewhat outdated Apple A12 Bionic platform. There is also a 10.2-inch Retina display with wide bezels and a Touch ID sensor in a circular button below the screen. An important difference from the iPad Pro and iPad Air will be the Lightning connector instead of the new USB-C. The keyboard, apparently, can only be connected via Bluetooth, plus you can use the Apple Pencil stylus of the very first generation.
And the last thing that Apple introduced is a bundled subscription to Apple One services. It would be logical to expect a single price, but the Cupertino company decided to give us a choice of three options. Basic subscription includes Apple Music, Apple TV +, Apple Arcade, and 50GB iCloud for $ 14.95 a month. The family plan is the same, but for multiple devices plus 200GB of iCloud storage. It costs $ 19.95 per month. Well, in the most expensive version there will be additional Apple News +, the new Apple Fitness + sports service (this is almost the same as any other fitness application, only made by Apple) and 2 TB in iCloud. You will have to pay for this already $ 29.95 per month.
Well, while we have not moved away from Apple, it is worth recalling that last week the company publicly reacted to the scandal with Epic Games and Fortite. The published document says that Fortnite can return to iOS at any time – this will happen as soon as Epic removes its own payment system from the game, which caused the conflict.
“Epic started the fire, doused it with gasoline and is now asking the court for urgent help in putting out it,” says Apple. The company said in a statement that Epic could have avoided further harm from both Fortnite and Unreal Engine with a simple keystroke, but the developer “is holding its users hostage to gain leverage in a business dispute.” According to Apple, Epic has started a lawsuit to draw attention to Fortnite, which is gradually declining in popularity. In addition, Apple and Epic Games will meet in court, the first meeting of which will take place on September 28. So we’ll come back to this topic later.
Sony finally held a presentation of the PlayStation 5, at which it introduced several new games, but most importantly, it called the release date and prices. As we know, the console will be released in two versions: with and without a Blu-ray drive. In the latter case, games can only be installed through the PlayStation Store. Otherwise, the characteristics of both versions do not differ.
The PlayStation 5 with optical drive will cost $ 499 (€ 499, £ 449 or ¥ 49,980), without the drive – $ 399 (€ 399, £ 359 or ¥ 39,980). Both versions will go on sale November 12 in the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. And a week later, on November 19, the PS5 can be bought in all other countries, including Russia – at 37,999 rubles for the digital version and 46,999 rubles for a console with a drive.
As is often the case, the announcement of prices for the next generation console has brought down the prices of used consoles of the current generation. Used standard versions of the console and PlayStation 4 Slim are now on average sold for 12-14 thousand rubles, depending on the configuration, before the announcement of the PS5, prices were in the range of 16-18 thousand rubles. All interested – a direct path to the popular Internet flea markets.
There is good news for those who prefer to play on PC: Polish studio CD Projekt RED published the system requirements for Cyberpunk 2077, and they turned out to be surprisingly democratic. The minimum requirements are an Intel Core i5-3570K or AMD FX-8310 processor, 8 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 (3 GB) or AMD Radeon RX 470 graphics card, and 70 GB of free hard disk space. Recommended requirements are as follows: Intel Core i7-4790 or AMD Ryzen 3 3200G processor; 12 GB of RAM, video card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6 GB) or AMD Radeon R9 Fury and the same 70 GB of hard disk space (SSD).
Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled for release on November 19th. On this day, the game will be released on PC, PS4, Xbox One and GeForce Now service. The version for the next generation consoles (PS5, Xbox Series X and S) will only be released next year.
Well, for those who are bored with news from space, there is something interesting. The executive director of Roscosmos for promising programs and science, Alexander Bloshenko, said that in the long term, Russia will start implementing a project to form a habitable base on one of Jupiter’s satellites.
We are talking about the construction of a base on Callisto, the second largest moon of Jupiter after Ganymede. There is an ocean in the depths of this body, and the depth of the subsurface layer of liquid water, according to various estimates, exceeds 100 km. Thus, in theory, conditions could exist on Callisto to sustain life. According to Bloshenko, this is the third place in the solar system in which it is most expedient to build a base for a person.
But it is important to note that there is no talk of project implementation yet. Roskosmos, like no one else, knows that making statements is not to roll bags. But we still believe in the best, in the closer plans of Roskosmos there is the development of the Moon – by 2035 it is planned to complete the construction of a permanent base on it.
