With the introduction of the Ampere family of mobile GPUs, NVIDIA gave the go-ahead to gaming laptop manufacturers: release. And they were not long in coming, announcing several models at once with various components and displays. One of the first was the company Gigabyte, which has replenished its arsenal of gaming laptops with several modifications based on mobile versions of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, GeForce RTX 3070 and GeForce RTX 3080 video cards.

The AERO 15 OLED 15.6 ” series of notebooks includes three models with indexes YC (GeForce RTX 3080), XC (GeForce RTX 3070) and KC (GeForce RTX 3060), and the flagship version of the laptop is equipped with an Intel Core i9-10980HK processor, and the other two – Intel Core i7-10870H. Otherwise, they are identical to each other – and all should provide a comfortable level of performance in games that have already been released and are preparing for release in the next couple of years with maximum quality settings and activation of various effects.

In today’s article we will get acquainted with the middle model – Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XCequipped with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Max-Q graphics card and an Intel Core i7-10870H processor.

Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC comes in two boxes at once. The outer shell is made of plain cardboard with information stickers, while the inner one is already beautifully designed, mostly in black, and equipped with a plastic carrying handle.

Inside, the laptop is inserted into a soft envelope and additionally fixed with foamed polyethylene stops, and on the side there is a box with accessories.

Among the latter, a massive power supply unit with a power cable, a brief instruction, a warranty memo, as well as a bag with a screw for attaching an additional SSD and a thermal pad for it stand out.

The laptop is manufactured in Taiwan, not in China, as is most often the case, and is backed by a two-year warranty. As for the cost of Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED in the XC modification, in Russia it is 189.99 thousand rubles.

⇡ #Design and ergonomics corps

Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC is made in a modern design in a 357 × 249 × 25 mm case (with legs) and a weight of 2,243 kilograms. The body is made of aluminum with a special nano-carbon coating, thanks to which the body panels are tactilely pleasant and not cold like most metals.

The top cover has glossy stripes that form many sharp corners, and the AERO logo with white backlighting is placed in the center of the top cover.

Almost half of the base area of ​​the case is reserved for ventilation grilles, just below which you can find the laptop marking, its serial number and a barcode with the production date.

When open, the Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC delivers even more gaming-centric focus thanks to a raised display, reinforced hinges and thin bezels.

The laptop screen can be opened without holding the base (of course, because its weight is two kilograms), and can be easily fixed in any position.

The opening angle of the panel with the screen is 135 degrees.

To give the case stability, rubber feet are mounted in its base: in front there are small rectangular inserts no more than two millimeters high, and at the back there are massive corners about five millimeters high.

On the front end of the laptop case, you can select only a notch for more convenient opening of the display and microphone holes.

But the back of the body is downright sports car exhaust – the grille looks so aggressive in this part.

Two more similarly designed grilles can be seen on the sides of the case, they are made in the same style.

Ports and connectors are displayed next to them. Among them are three USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A, one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C interface Thunderbolt 3 (up to 40 Gb / s), video outputs mini DP 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 (8K at 120 Hz), RJ-45 network socket ( 2.5 Gb / s), combo audio jack and SD card reader supporting ultra-fast UHS-II cards with 300 MB / s bandwidth.

There is also a connector for connecting a power adapter. In general, the set is excellent, a gaming laptop, in our opinion, should be just like that.

The laptop power button is located in the center above the keyboard, and above it is a small webcam (720p) with a mechanical shutter and indicator.

To summarize: externally, the Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC gives the impression of a very strong and well-executed gaming machine. It is pleasant to look at the laptop, you always touch the case with pleasure, and its significant excess weight confirms the fact that very productive components are installed inside, which we will go over to a detailed analysis very soon. For now, let’s go over the input devices of the Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC.

⇡ #Input Devices

The laptop has a membrane-type keyboard with a block of numeric keys and a functional line. The alphanumeric keys are 14.5 x 14.5 mm, and the functional keys are 14.5 x 10.0 mm.

The enlarged Enter key and arrows merged with the rest of the keys draw attention to itself, which, in our opinion, is not very convenient. Also, PgUp and PgDn are displayed above the digital block, and not in the usual column on the right. This will also take some getting used to.

The keyboard supports N-Key Rollover technology, which allows you to simultaneously press up to 80 keys. The key travel is about 2.0 mm, the actuation of the keystrokes is felt very well: if necessary, you can type large volumes of text, despite the fact that the laptop has a gaming status. It also supports creating macros for each key.

A separate feature of the keyboard is the proprietary Gigabyte Fusion backlight technology. Supports 16.7 million colors, a lot of various effects and smooth brightness control.

The keys are backlit very clearly and evenly, without blurring, as is sometimes the case in laptops. We played a little with the backlight and here are some of her photos.

True, Russian-speaking users should just say “Houston, we have a problem”, since the Russian layout is absolutely not highlighted here.

The dimensions of the touchpad (here it is called the “precision touch panel”) of the laptop are 106 × 71 mm, and in its upper left corner is a built-in fingerprint scanner.

The surface of the touchpad is extremely smooth, the positioning of the cursor is very precise, and it is a pleasure to work with it. It is from such little things that the impression of the premium class of the device is formed. Let’s add that the surface of the touchpad supports simultaneous touching with four fingers.

⇡ #Display

Gigabyte calls the display of the AERO 15 OLED series notebooks unmatched, and this is not an exaggeration or a gimmick – the display here is truly amazing. In fact: a matrix with a diagonal of 15.6 inches, type – Samsung AMOLED with a resolution of 4K (3840 × 2160 pixels) and a scanning frequency of 60 Hz, glossy, with anti-reflective coating. The display is VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black certified, and has 100% DCI-P3 color space, as well as X-Rite Pantone certification and individual factory calibration for each laptop display (DeltaE <1).

Gigabyte claims that the perimeter bezels are 3mm wide, and although our measurements are 1mm wider, the bezels appear very narrow due to the center-protruding edge that rests on the laptop’s working surface when the display is closed.

Before testing, we present the display characteristics using the Monitor Asset Manager utility.

We tested the Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC display with the X-Rite i1 Display Pro calibrator and Argyll CMS software with the DispcalGUI graphical interface. All measurements were carried out before the display was calibrated (conditionally, since the factory profile is already “sewn” into the laptop). Let’s see the results.

We obtained the average value of the deviations DeltaE higher than the unit declared in the characteristics – 1.87, and the maximum was equal to 6.18.

The color temperature is below the reference value of 6500 K at approximately 6300 K.

The gamma curve is close to the nominal value of 2.2, excluding a couple of non-critical bursts.

The deviations of the color balance in the gray gradient generally do not exceed 5%.

After the calibration, the average level of DeltaE deviations was only 0.07 units, the maximum was 1.41. The sRGB, Adobe RGB, and DCI P3 color space is 100%, 93.1% and 100%, respectively. We especially note that the sRGB and DCI-P3 display overlaps entirely.

Declared brightness of 400 cd / m22 confirmed by the results of our measurements: the maximum value turned out to be 399 cd / m22, and the minimum is 5 cd / m22… The adjustment is fairly smooth throughout the entire range.

We add that the uniformity of the display backlighting is ideal – of course, because it is OLED and here each pixel is lit separately.

The general impression of the Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC display: juicy and bright, it is a pleasure to play with it.

⇡ #Internal structure and accessories

Almost 65% of the internal volume of the laptop case is occupied by a massive cooling system with a motherboard and components, which we will take a closer look at separately. The remaining 35% are occupied by the battery.

The bottom panel is very light due to the large perforation area covered by a dust mesh filter. It is better not to put such a laptop on soft surfaces so that it does not suffocate.

We will provide a summary of the laptop’s hardware configuration using the AIDA64 Extreme utility.

Next, let’s move on to getting to know each individual component of the laptop’s hardware.

The motherboard is based on the Intel HM470 Express system logic set. The chipset crystal is covered with a thick thermal pad through which it contacts the laptop base.

Before testing, we updated the BIOS to the latest version FB03 dated December 18, 2020.

As we mentioned in the introduction of the article, the Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED can be equipped with one of two processor models: Intel Core i9-10980HK for the older version with the index YC and GeForce RTX 3080, as well as Intel Core i7-10870H for versions XC (GeForce RTX 3070) and KC (GeForce RTX 3060). We have just a laptop with the second version of the processor, the turbo frequency of which can go up to 5.0 GHz.

This is a very powerful (I would even say, overly productive in many cases) processor with eight cores and sixteen threads. Moreover, its declared TDP level in the specifications can reach 45 watts.

The laptop has two SO-DIMM slots for DDR4 memory modules. The maximum memory capacity in the Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED is 64 GB, and in our version there are two modules of 16 GB each, operating in dual-channel mode.

The effective memory frequency here is 2933 MHz, and the maximum supported one is 3200 MHz. Interestingly, modules manufactured by Crucial with the marking CT16G4SFS832A.M8FB (Micron D9XPF chips) and a frequency of 3200 MHz are installed here, but the memory still runs at 2933 MHz – and we did not find an opportunity to increase this frequency in the laptop BIOS (this is probably only available for senior YC). We were also not pleased with the high timings of the RAM, which are 21-21-21-47_2T here.

We have already drawn the attention of laptop manufacturers more than once to the need to use RAM with low latency in gaming models, especially since in this case the same Crucial has an excellent Crucial Ballistix BL2K16G32C16S4B kit with a frequency of 3200 MHz and delays 16-18-18-36… We are sure that the cost of replacing it from the currently installed modules would have an insignificant effect on the final price of the laptop, and the effect would be difficult to overestimate. Let’s hope that someday we will be heard – and gamers will not have to replace the RAM on their own.

The laptop has two graphics cores: integrated into the Intel UHD Graphics processor and a discrete NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Max-Q with 8 GB of GDDR6 memory.

The maximum core frequency of a discrete video card is declared at around 1290 MHz, the video memory frequency is 12000 MHz, and the power consumption level is 105 W. Supports NVIDIA Dynamic Boost 2.0, Optimus and Resizable BAR technologies.

A Western Digital SN730 (SDBPNTY-1T00) with a volume of one terabyte is installed here as a drive.

Like the chipset, it contacts the laptop’s lower metal cover through a thermal pad, so it must be additionally cooled. In addition, the laptop has a second seat for an 80 mm long SSD.

SSD specifications are as follows.

The performance of the drive is at a very high level, however, only when the laptop is running on AC adapter and mains. This is common for all gaming laptops, and the Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC is no exception. To demonstrate this fact, we tested the laptop drive on AC power (left results) and on battery power (right results).

At the same time, despite the decline in benchmarks, the performance of the SSD on battery power is still at a very decent level. As for its temperatures under load, in the stress test the SSD only warms up to 49 degrees Celsius. An excellent indicator!

The laptop uses a 2.5-gigabit Realtek RTL8125-BG as a cable network controller, and the wireless network is implemented by the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 module supporting Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), MIMO 2 × 2 and 2.4 / 5.0 GHz (160 MHz bandwidth).

The sound in the laptop is realized by the Realtek ALC255 audio processor and two 2W stereo speakers.

According to subjective impressions, the sound here is very decent, both in terms of the volume reserve and the purity of the output signal. Supported surround technology Nahimic 3 Surround.

⇡ #Cooling system, efficiency and noise level

Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC is equipped with a WindForce Infinity cooling system, which consists of five heat pipes, two massive heatsinks with tangential fans, each with 71 blades, and four air ducts.

Cold air enters the laptop case from the bottom – through ventilation holes equipped with a dustproof metal mesh.

In turn, heated air is released through the back of the case, as well as through the side ventilation grilles.

Of the five heat pipes, two eight-millimeter ones are common for the central processor and a discrete video card, one six-millimeter heat pipe is allocated individually for each circuit, and another one passes inside the cooling system and works to cool the video memory chips.

The operating modes of the laptop and its cooling system are configured in the Gigabyte Control Center software package. Here you can choose one of five modes: ECO, Normal, Sport, Sport + and Boost, as well as activate the Turbo-mode of the graphics core of the video card.

In addition, the utility displays monitoring data and battery status.

To assess the efficiency of cooling the laptop’s central processor, we used the powerMAX utility (in AVX mode), and the monitoring parameters were read and displayed by HWiNFO64. Testing conducted in an indoor environment of approximately 25 degrees Celsius and running Windows 10 Home x64 with the latest available drivers and updates.

We tested all five modes of the Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC using AC adapter and AC power and got the following results.

Как видим, при одновременной нагрузке на все ядра процессора в каждом из режимов Intel Core i7-10870H работает по-разному. Так в максимально производительном режиме Boost его частота стабилизируется на 3,4 ГГц при уровне TDP 62 Вт и температуре 76 градусов Цельсия, хотя в начале теста температура скакнула до 91 градусов Цельсия и на какие-то секунды активировался режим троттлинга. Оба «спортивных» режима снижают частоты CPU на 0,1 и 0,2 ГГц ниже режима Boost, с соответствующим снижением уровня тепловыделения и температур. Уровень шума во всех трёх случаях высокий. В режиме Normal процессор функционирует на частоте 3,0 ГГц при TDP 45 Вт и 67 градусах Цельсия, с заметным повышением комфорта в плане уровня шума ноутбука. Наконец, в режиме ECO ноутбук практически затихает, однако и процессор держит только 2,8 ГГц при 38 Вт. Для повседневных задач и этого будет достаточно, а для игр — уже вряд ли.

Отметим, что при питании от аккумулятора изменять режимы работы ноутбука нельзя.

В этом случае под нагрузкой частота процессора составляет 1,7 ГГц при 18 ваттах и лишь 48 градусах Цельсия.

По такой же схеме мы проверили и дискретную видеокарту, а в качестве нагрузки использовали тест стабильности Fire Strike Extreme из пакета 3DMark.

В режимах Sport, Sport+ и Boost результаты оказались идентичными, поэтому мы не будем приводить лишние скриншоты мониторинга, а только отметим разницу между активированной функцией Turbo для видеокарты и тестом без неё.

В ECO и Normal видеокарта работает одинаково: частота графического процессора держится около отметки 1,35 ГГц, что выше заявленных в спецификациях 1,29 ГГц, а температура ядра стабилизировалась на 77 градусах Цельсия. Память в обоих случаях держит стабильные 12 ГГц. В Sport, Sport+ и Boost, если не использовать функцию Turbo, частота GPU видеокарты составляет 1,41 ГГц при TDP 107 Вт и 80 градусах Цельсия. Включение же Turbo повышает частоту графического процессора не более чем на 0,03-0,05 ГГц при практически тех же показателях мониторинга.

Если же ноутбук отключить от адаптера питания, то частота графического процессора видеокарты снижается примерно до 0,8 ГГц с одновременным ограничением TDP на отметке 55 ватт.

Частота памяти также снижается, но всего на 0,1 ГГц. Тем не менее играть на таком ноутбуке при питании от аккумулятора будет уже, мягко говоря, некомфортно.

Тестирование производительности

Производительность центрального процессора и оперативной памяти Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC мы проверили в двух состояниях ноутбука: при питании от электросети в режиме Boost и при питании только от аккумулятора. Во втором случае результаты предсказуемо были ниже, чем в первом, и чаще всего эта разница была близка к двукратной, как и разница в частоте процессора.

Кстати, если ноутбук MSI с процессором Intel Core i7-1185G7 вполне закономерно проиграл Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC с его мощнейшим Intel Core i7-10870H, то Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H с AMD Ryzen 5 4600H оказался весьма достойным соперником, даже несмотря на очень весомую разницу в стоимости.

Далее мы перейдём к более интересным 3D-тестам, откроют которые набор бенчмарков из пакета 3DMark и World of Tanks enCore RT на ультра-качестве с активированными RTX.

Ну а теперь тесты в той области, ради которой и создавался Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC – игры. Добавим, что в каждой из них был активирован максимальный режим качества, все дополнительные эффекты, не считая MSAA, были включены, а VSync отключен. Каждую из 14 игр мы протестировали в двух разрешениях: 1920 × 1080 и 3840 × 2160 пикселей. Это позволило увидеть, где графическая подсистема ноутбука способна вытянуть его «родное» разрешение 4К, а где придётся снижать разрешение (или что-то отключать в настройках качества).

Итак, геймерам придётся поумерить аппетиты в таких играх, как Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed, Metro Exodus, Chernobylite, Red Dead Redemption 2 и Serious Sam 4, а в остальных протестированных играх Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC вполне справляется с нагрузкой и в разрешении 4K.

В среднем по всем играм и без учёта разницы в центральных процессорах, мобильная версия NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Max-Q опережает NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Max-Q на 33,2 %. Логично, что при сравнении с мобильной NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q разница была бы примерно на 10 % меньше.

В комплект Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC входит адаптер питания мощностью 230 Вт (19,5 В, 11,8 А), массой 730 граммов и со встроенным кабелем длиной 1,75 метра.

В свою очередь, ёмкость литий-полимерного аккумулятора в ноутбуке составляет 99 Вт·ч (6514 мА·ч).

По результатам шести циклов полного заряда аккумулятора с 3 % до 99 %, среднее время, за которое заполняется батарея, оказалось равно 1 час 38 минут… Причём с адаптером питания такой мощности ноутбук во время заряда можно нагружать любыми задачами, на скорость восполнения аккумулятора это никак не влияет.

Игровая направленность ноутбука Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC не помешала ему продемонстрировать довольно неплохой уровень автономности. Мы протестировали её в тестовом пакете PCMark’10 в режимах Modern Office, Applications, Gaming и Video при яркости дисплея 200 кд/м2 (73 % по шкале). Никаких искусственных оптимизаций мы не делали: сетевые соединения работали в обычных режимах, уровень звука встроенной акустики был равен 20 %. Результаты нас вполне удовлетворили.

Разумеется, играть на таком ноутбуке от аккумулятора бессмысленно, хотя на час с небольшим полного заряда хватит. А вот проработать почти весь рабочий день в офисе или посмотреть три-четыре фильма вполне можно. Добавим, что при снижении яркости дисплея до 100 кд/м2 (52%) время автономной работы Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC продлевается ещё примерно на час.

Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC – отличный игровой ноутбук с потрясающим 4K-дисплеем OLED, исчерпывающе производительным центральным процессором Intel Core i7-10870H и одной из самых быстрых мобильных видеокарт современности NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Max-Q. Улучшить его, пожалуй, можно было бы только установкой модулей оперативной памяти с низкими задержками и заменой HD-камеры на Full HD, что в этом классе ноутбуков выглядело бы совершенно логичным решением.

В остальном Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC можно назвать близким к идеалу игровым ноутбуком. К уже перечисленному мы добавим быстрый SSD объёмом 1 Тбайт и возможность установки дополнительного накопителя, 32 гигабайта оперативной памяти, 2,5-гигабитную сеть и беспроводный модуль с Wi-Fi 6, клавиатуру с настраиваемой подсветкой и высокоточный тачпад со сканером отпечатков пальцев. Ёмкий аккумулятор позволит проработать за ноутбуком почти всю смену, если, конечно, ваша работа не связана с играми, и заряжается всего за 1,5 часа. В общем, можем смело рекомендовать Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC для приобретения, если успеете опередить криптовалютчиков, которые, если судить по новостям, начали охоту и за такими ноутбуками.
