NAS Synology DS220 + is designed to work with two drives and belongs to the series of home NAS with the Plus index. And although this particular file server is the youngest model in this series, all devices with the Plus index we tested earlier were distinguished by high performance and interesting features. Let’s see what exactly Synology DS220 + can please its owner.

The device comes in a small cardboard box with a convenient plastic handle for transport. Inside, besides the drive itself, a standard set of accessories was found:

Synology DS220 + Motherboard

The novelty is based on a single-chip Intel Gemini Lake Refresh (GLK-R) platform with a dual-core Celeron J4025 processor. The operating frequency range for this processor is 2.0 to 2.9 GHz. This is one of the youngest processors in the series, but it also has integrated Intel UHD 600 graphics with 4K video transcoding (4096×2160 @ 60Hz). On the Synology DS220 + motherboard, the processor is covered with a fanless aluminum heatsink.

Celeron J4025 processor and SEC 949 K4A4G165WE-BCTD DDR4 memory module

The main memory module of the novelty has a capacity of only 2 GB. Four microcircuits of this module are soldered directly on the motherboard. Our sample used SEC 949 K4A4G165WE-BCTD DDR4 chips manufactured by Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. In addition, the system board has a free slot for installing a second RAM module, which can be up to 4 GB in capacity. Accordingly, the total memory capacity of the Synology DS220 + can be up to 6GB.

The NAS is equipped with two Gigabit network interfaces provided by a pair of widely used RTL8111HS controllers from Realtek Semiconductor Corp. The unit allows network connections to be aggregated with Link Aggregation with connection type setting. Also on board the Synology DS220 + are two USB 3.0 ports implemented by SoC.

The Altera 5M80Z FPGA module is used to store general settings and current device configuration. In general, we are familiar with the component base of Synology DS220 + from other models of Synology NAS, but this device is equipped with a new processor.

The body of the device is made in the classic form factor of a compact system unit with a metal frame and plastic bearing walls. The plastic has a matte finish with a pronounced roughness – it looks strict and impressive. The only drawback of such a coating is that any dust that gets on the surface is immediately visible. On the sides of the case are ventilation grilles in the form of company logos.

The front panel of the device is removable. On the outside, it has several smoothly polished edges, but most of the area is matte. The panel is secured with large rubber grommets at the corners of the drive bay.

To the right of the removable panel are LED indicators of hard disk activity and drive status. Below is one of the two onboard USB 3.0 ports with a button for copying data when a media is connected to it, as well as a backlit power control button. Another USB 3.0 port is located on the back of the case, next to the RJ-45 network interfaces, a jack for an external power adapter and a hole for attaching a Kensington security lock. Well, the main part of the rear panel is occupied by a plastic ventilation grill, behind which is a 92×92 mm fan.

To mount drives, simply remove the front panel from the case and remove the sled from the drive bay.

Disc skids

The design of the drive sled in the Synology DS220 + is well known to us from other Synology NAS models. They are entirely made of plastic, with a large handle on the outside, for which they can be easily and quickly removed. If you plan to work with 3.5-inch media, you will not need a screwdriver to mount them in the slide. The role of fasteners in this case is played by removable side plates with pins, which are inserted into the corresponding threaded holes on the side faces of the discs. To prevent the plates from falling out spontaneously, soft rubber bushings are inserted into the holes on the slide, into which the pins enter with some effort. The included screws are for use only with 2.5-inch media.

If you take a closer look at the inner surface of the drive bay, then on one side you can easily see a cutout in the metal frame, under which a slot for installing an additional memory module opens. Installation of this module is quite within the power of absolutely any person and does not require any special knowledge or a trip to the official representative of the company.

Under the disk bay on the case, you can see ventilation holes for air intake, as well as an opening behind which a connector for servicing the device is hidden.

Internal structure of the hull

The case of the Synology DS220 + is not intended for self-disassembly without loss of warranty, but it is still not so difficult to do it. Nothing dangles inside the device and does not interfere with free air circulation. The motherboard is covered with a metal part of the frame. To get to it, you will have to completely disassemble all the elements of the case. There is enough free space inside the Synology DS220 + to effectively cool all the electronic components of the NAS.

Search for a drive connected to the local network, as well as its configuration, is possible using either a PC or any mobile device running Android or iOS. There have been no changes in this regard since we tested the last Synology NAS. If the NAS is connected to a router with Internet access, then the first time it is turned on, it will download the latest version of DSM OS from the official server and install it automatically. After connecting, the user will be prompted to create a new account or log into an existing one.

DSM 6.2 interface

The DSM version has not changed either. At the time of testing the Synology DS220 +, DSM version 6.2 was available for download and installation, the capabilities of which we have already studied in detail using the example of the Synology DS1618 + model. For those who are not at all familiar with DSM’s features, it is best to refer to the overview at the link above.

Application Center

For the rest, we remind you that, thanks to the huge library of applications, this OS has almost unlimited possibilities, comparable to what any ordinary PC OS offers.

Plex Media Server and Video Station Apps

Applications can be deployed based on Synology NAS, for example, a multimedia server for storing and accessing movies and music. To do this, you can use the proprietary services Synology Video Station, Audio Station and Photo Station, or you can install, for example, the popular Plex Media Server. Apple fans can also install the iTunes server.

For users who prefer to work with NAS from a smartphone, Synology has developed a range of mobile applications, multimedia and more, available for installation on Android, iOS or Windows Phone. For example, you can use the corresponding applications DS Video, DS Photo, and DS Audio to work with videos, photos, and music stored on your NAS. Another free application, Synology Moments, can be installed on Android or iOS mobile devices, which allows you to view photos and videos saved on the disk of your Synology NAS on your smartphone. Here you can not only quickly copy all data from your smartphone, but also create albums, share files with other users, and even edit photos.

A lot of attention has been paid to data backup and security. DSM 6.2 comes with a pre-installed Security Advisor application that automatically analyzes the device’s fault tolerance, identifying weaknesses and proposing solutions. For added security, you can install a trial version of McAfee Antivirus from the App Store.

More than a dozen different programs, including third-party solutions, are available for backing up and storing data in the app store. But the simplest, home-user-friendly and all-encompassing at the same time is Hyper Backup. Here you can configure copying data to various media, including USB, remote cloud storage of third parties and rsync file servers. When choosing a new backup task, the user can specify the folders to copy and set the schedule. It is also possible to customize the rotation of backups or quite simply delete old copies of data.

Synology also offers users its cloud resources for paid remote backup and storage. Synology C2 has flexible pricing plans: the cost of storage depends not only on the amount of storage provided, which can vary from 100 GB to 200 TB, but also on the location of the remote server.

Also note that the Synology DS220 + works with the Btrfs file system, and therefore additional data backup options are available for it. For example, using the Snapshot Replication service, you can create snapshots of the system that take up minimal disk space, but at the same time allow you to recover data in case of loss or damage to the media. The user sets the schedule for creating snapshots himself. You can also take pictures manually.

DSM 6.2 has many possibilities. We have shown just a few of them, but for a more complete assessment of what this OS is capable of, it is better to turn to our previous reviews of Synology NAS.

Performance testing was conducted with two 3.5-inch TOSHIBA NAS N300 HDWN160 hard drives, 6 TB each, operating at 7200 RPM. The performance test bench had the following configuration:

  • Intel Core i5-2320 3.0 GHz processor;
  • GIGABYTE GA-P67A-D3-B3 Rev. 2.0;
  • RAM 16 GB DDR3-1333;
  • video adapter ASUS GeForce 6600 GT 128 MB;
  • SSD Intel SSD 520 with a capacity of 240 GB (2 × in RAID 0 mode);
  • Intel I350-T2 network adapter with two gigabit network interfaces;
  • Windows 10 Pro.

The test bench’s own read speeds exceeded 700 MB / s, so the bench will not limit the performance results of the NAS. A shared folder was created on the drive, which was connected to the test bench OS as a network drive. Testing conducted using ATTO Disk Benchmark and Intel NAS Performance Toolkit. In the first case, testing was carried out for disks assembled in a RAID 0. In the second case, a RAID 1 array was assembled, and the standard encryption procedure was applied to the folder on the drive with which the data was exchanged. In both cases, the speed of data exchange was not limited by the capabilities of the NAS, but by the bandwidth of the gigabit communication channel. Under heavy load with multiple users, performance will certainly decrease, but for home use, the capabilities of the Synology DS220 + are clearly more than enough. An NAS with this level of performance could well be housed in a small office with several employees. At the same time, you can not only store data on it, but also deploy a server.

We also note that the Synology DS220 + does not bother with excessive noise and does not heat up too much. During the entire testing period, the heating of the disks did not exceed 54 ° C, even during the most intensive work.

⇡ #conclusions

The Synology DS220 + 2-Drive NAS is an excellent NAS for both home and small office environments. This device is not suitable only for those who need to work with very large amounts of data. However, today you can buy drives with a capacity of even 16 TB, so most users will not want to connect an expansion module to this NAS. If this still may be required in the future, then it is better to pay attention to the Synology DS720 + model. For the rest, the novelty has entirely strong sides:

  • impeccable design;
  • easy installation of discs without tools;
  • the ability to self-install an additional memory module;
  • high level of productivity;
  • low noise and heat generation;
  • broad capabilities of DSM 6.2 OS.
