outstanding rendering performance, but getting deaf up close


The American company Puget Systems, which specializes in assembling custom personal computers, has published an interesting review of the flagship model of the GeForce RTX 3090 video card. The specialists used four Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3090 TURBO graphics accelerators at once, equipped with a cooling system with a tangential fan.

The GeForce RTX 3090 video card (and in general all models of the GeForce RTX 30xx series) do not support the multi-GPU configuration mode, which goes beyond using more than two video cards at the same time. However, this rule does not apply to programs and applications that do not rely on SLI technology. The latter include, for example, various professional applications including Octane, V-Ray and RedShift. They can use all video resources available in the system. As noted above, four Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3090 TURBO video cards took part in the tests at once. At the moment, this is the only version of this model of the graphics accelerator, which is equipped with a “turbine”, which is useful for dense placement of accelerators.

Overview Puget Systems interesting for several reasons at once. Firstly, at the moment almost no one has the opportunity to purchase four video cards of the Ampere generation at once. Moreover, the problem lies not only in the price tag of $ 1,500 apiece, but also in the catastrophic shortage of all GeForce RTX 30 series video cards. Secondly, few people have the necessary resources to carry out such tests, given the gluttony of a configuration of four video cards. It should be added that Puget Systems is also known for its PugetBench synthetic benchmark, designed to test GPU performance in various creative applications in the Adobe Creative Cloud suite.

For the test, Puget Systems used an Intel Xeon W2255 workstation (10 cores / 20 threads, 3.7-4.7 GHz) and an ASUS WS C422 SAGE motherboard equipped with 128 GB of DDR4-3200 RAM. The system was powered by two 1600W EVGA power supplies.

The main focus was on rendering tasks. Benchmarks such as OTOY OctaneBench, V-Ray Next, RedShift and DaVinci Resolve launched via PugetBench were used.

Tests have shown that using a configuration of four GeForce RTX 3090 in OctaneBench and V-Ray Next gives a tangible advantage over a configuration with three graphics cards. But at the same time, in DaVinci, four accelerators practically do not give a tangible performance advantage over three video cards.

Also, the use of more GeForce RTX 3090 video cards brought tangible benefits in the RedShift test.

A system based on a ten-core Xeon processor and four GeForce RTX 3090s consumed more than 1.7 kW of power at its peak. Energy efficiency is improved with two power supplies. Then the power consumption value dropped to 1670 W.

Considering the peculiarity of the cooling system of video cards, as well as the specifics of the tests, a system of four video cards Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3090 TURBO at the time of testing it howled like an airplane turbine.
