Octave Klaba, founder of OVHcloud, a European cloud provider, said the cloud and hosting industry needs to rethink the backup business. The notorious SBG2 data center in Strasbourg, which burned down the other day, belonged to OVH. And many owners of the data who placed them in this data center cannot return them, because they do not have backups.
Today, creating and storing data backups is often an optional service that is paid separately. Sometimes you have to pay for extra space, sometimes even to automate the creation of copies. Klaba proposes to make this feature free by default for everyone. OVHcloud will also provide a free backup service for all of its customers.
As for the causes of the fire, the investigation is still ongoing. The main version is a failure of the backup power system. This is confirmed by the pictures from the thermal imagers of the fire brigades, who “saw” the burning UPS systems. Now the company is urgently putting into construction in the SBG1 data center, which was only partially damaged by the fire in SBG2.
