It is difficult to call Persona 5 Strikers a full-fledged continuation of the fifth “Persona”, even though this is how it presents itself. Rather, by analogy with some anime series, this is a special episode for fans who are hungry for their favorite work. The entourage is the same, the heroes are the same, they do practically the same thing, except in different circumstances and decorations, and it all turns out fervently. But the feeling of integrity and significance of this holiday of life is not. And many of the P5 elements are either abolished or simplified here. On the other hand, there were also successful finds, which would have been unthinkable to present in the main license plate …

Summer is in full swing, familiar heroes get together to spend their holidays joyfully and carefree. But it was not there! In the metaverse, as in the real world, it is suddenly restless – the villains bring chaos and subjugate the will and mind of people: somewhere another pop idol causes people too unhealthy attraction, and somewhere a politician with controversial biographical facts uses a painfully hot support of citizens. And, of course, the point here is not in excellent PR teams – media persons, they are the monarchs of “prisons” (analogous to “palaces” from Persona 5), ​​gain control over minds exclusively by metaphysical methods. Well, sounds like work for Phantom Thieves!

Although Persona 5 Strikers refers to the topic of information and its influence on people through manipulation, it only serves as a backdrop for more personal collisions. Important for the plot are the root causes of why a person generally gets on a slippery slope. And the plot comes to a gloomy conclusion: darkness in the heart does not arise by itself, it appears due to repressed mental trauma – as a natural defense. Does a person calm down memories of school bullying, does he try to drown out the feeling of guilt, does he deny the fact of his personal inconsistency – the erosion of the soul, even buried in the depths of the subconscious, corrupts the mind.

The embodiment of suppressed fears and traumas found themselves in the images of “jailers”. It is they who are sublimated memories and images from the deep past – a school bully, a cruel father or dishonorable colleagues. Victory over them is half the battle, because the antagonist will accept himself and his deeds ahead. So the culmination of each “prison”, a meeting with the monarch himself, turns out to be intense not only in terms of play, but also emotionally. But after an educational conversation preceding and following the harsh battle, the “villains” realize that they were only trying to cope with a heavy emotional burden, but turned out to be powerless and lost control, first of all, over themselves. In between the heartbreaking stories of monarchs, “Phantom Thieves” do not deny themselves the pleasure of a little rest. And the main acts are separated by long episodes of a carefree celebration of life: the heroes travel through Japan in a cozy camper, have picnics, have a heart-to-heart conversation, throw beach parties, visit attractions and, in general, have a great summer.

But the player in these moments is far from having so much fun – these scenes just last an indecent amount of time. Interest in them is disappearing rapidly, because each of the summer fun does not require any action, except that you can choose one of three answer options in dialogues, which in general do not affect anything. The very communication of the heroes does not carry semantic or artistic significance – the usual youthful chatter, which for some reason was given almost a third of a forty-hour game. These dialogues do not really develop relationships, they do not sparkle with wit, and, to be honest, they are clearly made in order to drag out the playing time.

In addition, summer sideshows are too corny, strongly destroying the atmosphere and pace of the story, which hits the integrity of the story. In theory, the moments of calm, perhaps, should have created a contrast with the main gloomy narrative, but in reality they look unreasonably prolonged and far from always appropriate. Fortunately, the “torment” does not last forever (and the “skip” command, thanks, is present) – and now we are storming the “prisons” again!

Strikers, while stylistically echoing Persona 5, is actually a completely different game. Some mechanics have disappeared, others have been greatly simplified or modified. For example, the friendship bond between characters now grows on its own – after fights or dialogues. The “connection” parameter is common for everyone, and for the levels the game gives out several points that can be spent on useful team bonuses: from increasing damage from different categories of abilities to restoring part of health and spirit after each battle. But social skills did not become at all, as well as the mini-activities associated with them.

The main specificity of Strikers is that turn-based battles went into oblivion, and they were replaced by adrenaline fights in the spirit of slashers from the Dynasty Warriors series. The handwriting of Omega Force is really recognizable: at times the number of enemies on the screen reaches such indicators that sometimes it is difficult to find a hero in this insane whirlwind of massacre. The battles here are intense, intense, and different characters bring a lot of remarkable nuances to them.

By the way, the basis of the campaigns from Persona 5 is here in place: a group of only four characters can go on a sortie, and in the “prison” the player controls only one of them. With enemies, you can face nose to nose or even miss moments for an attack and find yourself in a vulnerable position, but it’s better to guess the moment and set up an ambush. In the skirmish itself, one character is also given control, but the other members of the team do not get lost and take an active part in the clash. By the way, you can easily switch to each one right during the battle.

All Phantom Thieves have their own set of skills, personal combat combinations, special techniques and abilities. For example, Yusuke masterfully shreds enemies with crushing series of katana blows, like Virgil from Devil May Cry; Ann creates fire whirlwinds with a trusty whip; Makoto, performing a combo, snatches a motorcycle out of his bosom and goes to a powerful ram; Morgan’s cat turns into an irrepressible wagon; and the newcomer to the team, Zenkichi, creates with his sword deadly and spectacular energy waves, shredding hordes of enemies into salad. Studying the features of the game for each of the heroes is incredibly exciting, besides, confidently mastering the techniques of each member of the squad will be a prudent step, because, as in the fifth “Person”, the composition matters.

Each enemy has its own strengths and weaknesses – some have resistance to cold, some have sensitivity to radiation, and others, although vulnerable to fire, are capable of being fueled by the enemy’s electrical attacks. In relation to ordinary enemies, all these nuances in general do not make the weather (ordinary aggressors can be easily defeated by any of the heroes), but when a mess is started with an elite enemy or, for example, a boss, the combat subtleties of using persons come to the fore. An accurate blow with a suitable element will cause significant damage to the enemy’s defense, and several will completely destroy it, opening up a momentary opportunity to conduct a powerful All-Out attack, which, if it does not crush the enemy into dust, will certainly significantly cut his health bar. Fun as hell … the first twenty hours.

But, alas, as often happens, at a certain moment, the unrestrained cutting of enemies begins to inevitably bore you. Fights are held on automatism, screensavers with spectacular finishing techniques you just want to skip (but you can’t), role-playing elements cease to play a significant role, and dialogues stretching the timing make the gamepad bite out of boredom. The full potential of Persona 5 Strikers is depleted noticeably before the climax. And it’s a pity! The sense of proportion let us down: if the P5S were half shorter and verbally laconic, you see, if it weren’t for a masterpiece, then at least an excellent project. And so – just good.
