Laptops with OLED displays can hardly be called breakthroughs, since OLED technology has firmly and ubiquitously entered our life in various categories of devices, and now we can observe its further expansion and decrease in cost for the end user. More than a year ago, we got acquainted with the ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo UX581GV dual-display laptop – and one of the screens in it was made using this technology.

With all the advantages of that laptop, it also had a very significant drawback – a very high cost. The newest model of the ultrabook-transformer ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA does not have this drawback: its cost is much lower, although the model is still available only to relatively wealthy users. Along with an OLED screen with a 4K resolution, the ultrabook was endowed with the most modern Intel processor of the Tiger Lake family, a capacious – by the standards of compact laptops – battery, support for Wi-Fi 6 and other interesting features.

ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA comes in a small cardboard box with a plastic handle. The box itself contains only a minimum of information about the device, and a short configuration and serial number are shown on the sticker at the end of the box.

Inside the main box, between the corners of foamed polyethylene, another box is inserted, in which the ultrabook is located.

On the side of it, you can find a third box with accessories. In our case, it contained only a power adapter with an American standard plug.

Serial models must include an ASUS Pen, instructions and software. Well, the plug will be European.

The ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA ultrabook manufactured in China comes with a 1-year warranty. The exact cost of this model will depend on the specific configuration, but for the version with mid-range components (golden mean), we were given a price of about 139.9 thousand rubles.

The ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA is a premium ultrabook and looks like an expensive and elite product. The top cover is made of metal in a jade black color that changes color depending on the angle of incidence of light.

At an acute angle, it can appear black, and when viewed directly at the body, the shade appears more gray than black.

The sophistication of the case is given by copper-red stripes on the ends of the side and front edges, as well as the branded concentric grinding of the lid with circles radiating from the golden inscription “ASUS”.

Responsible for stability are four rubber feet, barely protruding from the base of the case.

The Ultrabook is pleasant to hold in your hands – both simply by touch and because it is compact and light: 305.0 x 211.0 x 13.9 mm and 1.2 kg, respectively.

ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA is a so-called transformer with a touch screen that opens up to 360 °, that is, it easily converts from a regular laptop to a tablet (in this case, the keyboard is disabled).

At the same time, the panel with the screen is fixed in any position; no supports or holders are required.

However, you won’t be able to open the display with one hand, you have to hold the base a little. However, perhaps this is due to the novelty of the sample – and over time the hinges will be more malleable.

On the working panel of the laptop, you can see the inscription “Sound by harman / kardon” and a small sticker that says that the laptop meets the Intel Evo certification.

Few ports are located on the sides of the ultrabook case.

There are only four ports: one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A (5 Gb / s), one HDMI 2.0b and two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C with support for Thunderbolt 4 (up to 40 Gb / s) and Power Delivery. Also on the sides are a power button and a battery indicator.

Unfortunately, the ultrabook does not have a headphone or microphone jack (which is still a useful little thing), as well as a card reader, which manufacturers install in laptops less and less.

ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA is equipped with a “full-size” keyboard (meaning the keys themselves) of the membrane type. There is no block of numeric keys, but on the side there is a column with buttons often used when typing.

There is no Russian keyboard layout in our version of the ultrabook, and the English one is applied with pale golden numbers on a black background.

The dimensions of the main keys are 16 × 13 mm, the functional keys are 16 × 7.5 mm, but the arrow keys are narrow and uncomfortable again. I did not manage to get used to them during testing ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA. The key travel is 1.4 mm.

The keyboard has three levels of backlighting, but it cannot be called uniform. However, there are no critical highlights on it either.

Keystrokes are silent – at some briefings and meetings, active typing on such a keyboard will not bother anyone.

ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA received a proprietary input device called NumberPad 2.0, measuring 130 × 66 mm. Outwardly, this is a regular two-button touchpad, but in its upper right corner there is a button for activating the digital block.

The surface of the touchpad has a glass coating, but it is not smooth, as one might expect, but with a slight roughness, which allows more accurate positioning of the cursor. In addition to this, the touchpad has protection against accidental palm presses (most likely, software).

The top edge of the laptop display panel houses an HD camera, an IR camera, and an array of optimized microphones (supports echo and noise canceling).

The build quality of the ultrabook case is at a high level, when pressed on the panel, it does not creak or click. In addition, all surfaces, with the exception of the display, are non-marking – fingerprints of clean hands do not remain on them.

While ASUS attributes the ZenBook Flip S UX371EA to its premium design, compactness, and outstanding battery life, the ZenBook Flip S UX371EA all pales in comparison to the exceptional 4K OLED display that the Taiwanese have given this laptop. The advantages of OLED technology in comparison with other matrices have long been known – a rich black color, more accurate color reproduction, high image clarity, wide viewing angles and, of course, very high energy efficiency, which is very important for compact ultrabooks where there is space for a capacious battery. usually not. The display in the ZenBook Flip S UX371EA can be called the OLED benchmark in ultrabooks or laptops, since all of the above applies to it. However, let’s confirm this with specific numbers and measurement results.

So, the ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA uses a glossy 13.3-inch NanoEdge HDR touchscreen display with a claimed 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, complying with the VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 standard. The side bezels are 4.5 mm wide, the top one is 9 mm, and the bottom – 21 mm, but they are all hidden under the glass, so there is a lasting feeling of a frameless screen. Its resolution is 3840 × 2160 pixels (4K), and the frequency is 60 Hz. Matrix marking – ATNA33TP11-1.

We tested the display parameters with the X-Rite i1 Display Pro calibrator and the Argyll CMS software with the DispcalGUI graphical interface. All measurements were taken prior to display calibration. Let’s see the results.

Based on the measurements, the screen is already well calibrated at the factory, since the color temperature is close to the reference value of 6500 K, and the fluctuations depending on the shade of gray are not very significant.

On the gamma curve, deviations were recorded in the extreme values ​​of brightness – below 20% and above 85%.

On the other hand, deviations of color balance in the gray gradient raise questions only below the 10% level, which does not matter at all.

The display is very bright – the maximum brightness value was 463 cd / m22! Well, if someone needs to work in pitch darkness and minimize the brightness, then it can be reduced altogether to 4.5 cd / m22

Comfortable for working with an ultrabook indoors is a brightness level of less than 50%, and in direct sunlight, the brightness can be raised to 80%, while still having a huge margin.

Measuring the uniformity of the backlight of the ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA display revealed problems along the left edge, where the deviations exceeded the permissible values.

Nevertheless, visually three different people failed to fix this defect.

The display has 100% DCI-P3 color gamut (also called cinematic color space). In fact, this screen’s color reproduction capabilities are vastly superior to DCI-P3.

It is not surprising that in the default mode the display colors seemed oversaturated to me, but to correct them in the proprietary MyASUS utility there is a separate section, where there are even preset settings profiles and a manual mode.

A few words about personal impressions of the 4K display ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA. Its image quality, detail and clarity, as well as the depth of blacks are truly amazing. This is especially evident when you look from the, in principle, still quite decent 2.5K-monitor Samsung SyncMaster SA850 to the OLED display of an ultrabook – and you think: how have I been looking at this “soap” for so many years? In general, I have no doubts that the future of displays belongs to OLED technology and its even more advanced modifications.

⇡ #Internal structure and accessories

The plastic base of the laptop is removable entirely, there are no separate hatches for access to the components (and should not have an ultrabook).

It is obvious from the internal layout that the battery takes up the maximum space, and less space is reserved for the board with components and other small components.

ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA impressed even when turned on, since it took only 4 (four!) Seconds from the moment you pressed the power button until the desktop appeared. Time to wake up from sleep mode is less than 1 second. After turning on the laptop, it immediately detected a new version of the motherboard BIOS from September 25, 2020 and offered to update to it.

Our version of the Ultrabook is based on the 11th Generation Intel Core i7-1165G7 mobile processor from the Tiger Lake-U family, with four cores and eight threads.

Today this is the most productive Intel processor of the most energy efficient (there is also a Core i7-1185G7, but the difference from the additional 100 MHz cannot be caught): its maximum TDP level is 28 W, and the base one is 12 W. In this case, the processor can operate at frequencies from 1.2 to 4.7 GHz and has 12 MB of cache memory of the third level. In other configurations, the ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA can be equipped with an Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor, which is distinguished by lower frequencies (0.9-4.2 GHz) and a smaller amount of L3 cache (8 MB). I must say that in the end, within the capabilities of the ultrabook, the difference in performance between these processors will be negligible.

The ultrabook can be installed 8 or 16 GB of LPDDR4 RAM, soldered on the motherboard. For some reason, there is no configuration for the ZenBook Flip S UX371EA with 32GB, and this, in our opinion, is an oversight of ASUS. The effective memory frequency is an impressive 4266 MHz for both laptops and desktops, but the timings are very high – 36-39-39-90_1T.

Nevertheless, even at such high timings, thanks to the frequency, the memory demonstrates record performance for ultrabooks, which you can see in the section with test results.

The laptop uses the Intel Iris Xe graphics core integrated into the processor.

Despite the fact that Intel is actively promoting this graphics as a significant step forward in comparison with all previous cores built into the CPU, you should not indulge yourself – in games, the performance of Intel Iris Xe is, to put it mildly, modest.

ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA has only one SSD drive – and there is no room for additional ones. Its volume can be 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB. In our version of the ultrabook, a Western Digital PC SN730 (SDBPNTY-1T00-1102) SSD with a volume of 1 TB is installed, covered with a heat spreader sticker on top.

The declared resource of the drive is 400 TBW.

In performance tests, the SSD performed very well, in fact it is one of the fastest SSDs installed in an ultrabook. Importantly, its performance does not depend on the power mode of the ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA – both on the mains (results on the left) and when running on battery power (results on the right), we got almost the same results.

As with the speed characteristics, the ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA’s SSD operating temperature is in order. So, for example, in the AIDA64 Extreme stress test, the SSD temperature stabilized at 57 degrees Celsius and then did not increase, even if the test time was increased to 1.5 hours.

For obvious reasons, the ultrabook does not have a wired network interface, but it is fully compensated by the high-speed Intel AX201D2W wireless module supporting Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), MIMO 2 × 2 and operating at 2.5 GHz and 5.0 GHz (bandwidth 160 MHz).

Two antennas of the wireless module are built into the sides of the ultrabook case.

The ASUS SonicMaster audio system is designed in collaboration with Harman Kardon and features an intelligent amplifier.

Two stereo speakers are built into the side bevels of the chassis, closer to the front.

The volume margin of the ultrabook audio system is sufficient for a room with an area of ​​20 m2, the sound is clear and sonorous, but like any compact device, there is a problem with low frequencies. It seems that they are struggling to manifest themselves during the playback of the audio sequence, but in vain. We add that vibrations of the ultrabook case panels were not detected at any volume.

⇡ #Cooling system, efficiency and noise level

Despite being very compact and only 13.9mm thin, ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA features an active air cooling system with a radiator and fan. Air enters it through two ventilation grilles at the base.

To improve cooling, the base of the Ultrabook rises when you open the display.

The air heated by the ultrabook components is discharged through the ventilation grill in the rear end of the case.

The cooling system itself is quite simple: one flat heat pipe pumps heat flow from the processor and graphics core to an aluminum heatsink, through which an 80 mm fan with thin and flat blades drives cold air.

It is important that even at maximum speed, the fan does not make working at a laptop uncomfortable, only the rustle of air driven through the ribs is heard, but in standard or silent operation it is simply not audible. The modes themselves are configured in the Fan Profile section of the MyASUS application.

To evaluate the efficiency of cooling the central processor in the ultrabook, we used the powerMAX utility (in AVX mode), and the monitoring parameters were read and displayed by HWiNFO64. Testing conducted in an ambient temperature of approximately 25.5 degrees Celsius and running Windows 10 Pro x64 operating system with the latest available drivers and updates.

First, let’s look at the results of the temperature mode of the ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA when connected to the power adapter.

In the maximum performance mode, the processor started the test quite cheerfully – at a frequency above 4 GHz, but, alas, the maximum temperature was reached almost immediately, which forced the ultrabook to bring its cooling system to maximum speed and stabilize the temperature at 70 degrees Celsius along the hottest core. The processor frequency was 1.9 GHz (13 W). Режим Standard отличается чуть меньшей температурой, на 0,1 ГГц более низкой частотой ядра (в этом случае энергопотребление составляет 12 Вт) и сравнительно тихой работой. Ну а в режиме с говорящим названием Silent частота ядер в нагрузке не превышает 1,1 ГГц (8 Вт), зато ноутбук работает бесшумно.

Если вы думаете, что только что уже видели эти скриншоты, то вам не показалось: ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA от аккумулятора работает практически так же, как и от электросети. Более того, в тихом режиме частота процессора в нагрузке составляет 1,2 ГГц, что на 0,1 ГГц выше, чем при подключении к адаптеру питания.

В сравнении с другими ультрабуками новый ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA выглядит весьма уверенно. Для сравнения в таблицу с результатами мы включили недавно протестированный ультрабук Huawei MateBook X 2020 и Honor MagicBook Pro (HLYL-WFQ9), а также эталонную систему в виде обычного настольного компьютера.

Нужно отметить, что особенно здорово Intel Core i7-1165G7 выглядит в сравнении с Intel Core i5-10210U, и даже если бы на месте последнего был чуть более производительный Intel Core i7-10510U, то на буквальное уничтожение новым ядром Tiger Lake мобильного процессора Intel предыдущего, 10-го поколения это никак не повлияло бы.

Автономность – ещё одна сильная сторона нового ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA. Ультрабук комплектуется компактным адаптером питания AD2129320 мощностью 65 Вт (20,0 В, 3,25 А) и массой 225 граммов. Длина кабеля – 1,95 метра.

Ёмкость литий-полимерного аккумулятора в ультрабуке составляет 67 Вт·ч (4220 мА·ч).

Адаптер заряжает аккумулятор с уровня 3 до 99 % за 1 час и 50 минут… Причём, уровня заряда 60 % аккумулятор достигает не более чем за 45 минут, а вот на оставшиеся 40 % придётся потратить ещё около часа.

Сначала мы проверили автономность ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA в пакете PCMark’10 в режимах Modern Office, Applications, Gaming и Video. Напомним, что в тестах автономности ноутбуков яркость дисплея вручную фиксируется на уровне 200 кд/м2

Итог: около 10 часов в рабочих режимах или при имитации воспроизведения видео и почти 3 часа в играх – отличный результат для ультрабука такого уровня и производительности! Добавим, что при реальном просмотре Full HD-видео полного заряда аккумулятора хватило почти на 12 часов. Ни звук, ни сетевые соединения при этом не отключались для искусственного увеличения времени автономной работы.

⇡#Conclusion

ASUS позиционирует новый ZenBook Flip S UX371EA как премиальный ультрабук-трансформер — и он полностью оправдывает это позиционирование, с какой стороны ни посмотри. Начнём с внешности: изысканный дизайн с лаконичными медными полосками, компактность и малый вес, возможность открывать дисплей на 360 градусов, превращая ноутбук в планшет, а также приятные наощупь материалы и безупречное качество сборки. Данная модель удачно впишется как в офисный антураж, так и в домашнюю обстановку, а OLED-экран с разрешением 4K удовлетворит даже самых взыскательных пользователей.

Аппаратно новый ультрабук также находится на пике технологий. Мобильный процессор Intel 11-го поколения Core i7-1165G7 значительно превосходит процессоры предыдущего, 10-го поколения, а по графической составляющей его производительность выше в 3-4 раза, хотя в конечном итоге всё же остаётся скромной. Есть вопрос к максимальному объёму оперативной памяти – почему-то в ASUS решили не наделять данную модель 32 Гбайт, которые могли бы в будущем пригодится. С другой стороны, если исходить из сегодняшних реалий, то 16 Гбайт достаточно для любых задач, которые способен выполнять ZenBook Flip S UX371EA, плюс это рекордно быстрые по меркам ультрабуков 16 Гбайт. Вторят памяти и скоростной SSD, беспроводной сетевой адаптер с поддержкой Wi-Fi 6, интерфейс Thunderbolt 4 и громкая акустика.

Отдельно отметим автономность ультрабука: для обычной работы или воспроизведения видео аккумулятора хватит не менее чем на десять часов, а если захочется поиграть во что-то не слишком ресурсоёмкое или позапрошлогоднее, то можно рассчитывать почти на три часа. При этом 60 % заряда адаптер питания восстановит всего за 45 минут. И что самое интересное, ZenBook Flip S UX371EA практически не снижает свою производительность при работе от аккумулятора, как это всегда происходит у более мощных моделей ноутбуков. На наш взгляд, если прогнозируемый уровень цены (~139 тыс. руб.) будет подтверждён, то у ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA не будет конкурентов в своём классе, а от нас ультрабук получает заслуженную награду «Выбор редакции».
