Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 480 processor for budget 5G smartphones

Qualcomm today unveiled a new affordable platform for 5G smartphones. While devices based on the Snapdragon 690, which until then was Qualcomm’s most affordable 5G chip, cost about $ 300, devices with the new chip, dubbed the Snapdragon 480 5G, will start at $ 125. Thus, today’s novelty will make 5G smartphones even more affordable.

The new 8nm chipset includes a Snapdragon X51 5G modem that supports both 6GHz (sub6) and millimeter (mmWave) frequencies. In addition, the Snapdragon 480 provides Bluetooth 5.1 support. The processor has eight Kryo 460 cores operating at frequencies up to 2 GHz. The GPU Adreno 619 is used for graphics processing. It is also worth noting the Hexagon 686 signal processor included in the chipset. The Snapdragon 480 supports screens with Full HD + resolution and refresh rates up to 120 Hz.

The new chipset boasts Quick Charge 4+ fast charging support. It is also capable of processing signals simultaneously from three cameras with a resolution of up to 13 megapixels each. The Snapdragon 480 is expected to hit Nokia, OPPO and Vivo smartphones in the first half of this year.
