Four US cybersecurity agencies, including the FBI, CISA, ODNI and NSA, issued a joint statement today officially accusing the Russian government of organizing an attack on SolarWinds’ supply chain. This is expected to be followed by an official response from the authorities and action will be taken.
At the end of the year, it became known that a certain hacker group, which was assigned the code APT29, injected malicious software into the SolarWinds update distribution. The latter, unknowingly, infected thousands of clients with malware, including software developers, for example, Microsoft, which sent infected updates further through its channels, as well as the main government and military structures of the United States.
To investigate the incident, a group of representatives from the FBI, NSA, CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Agency) and ODNI (Office of the Director of National Intelligence) was formed. The group’s joint conclusion, which was officially published, states that hackers under the umbrella of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service are most likely to blame for the hacking.
The group’s statement was the first official reaction of the US authorities, which, in the person of President Donald Trump, preferred to remain silent on this matter. Also, the official accusation by the Russian authorities of the SolarWinds hack is intended to put an end to rumors that the SolarWinds hack was intended to gain access to voting machines in the US presidential elections. According to the Commission of Inquiry, the SolarWinds hack bore signs of intelligence gathering, and not something that everyone immediately thought of.
Some of the American media explain Trump’s reluctance to blame Russia without solid evidence by the fact that allegedly Russian hackers and the Russian authorities helped him in the 2016 presidential elections. But now he has been pinned to the wall with evidence of Russia’s guilt in the SolarWinds hack, and Trump will have to retaliate. The reaction of the Russian authorities has not yet been reported. It would be presumptuous to expect her on the January holidays.
