Russia will spend more than 4 billion rubles on the development of a nuclear space tug project

The development of a preliminary project for the creation of a space complex with a transport and energy module based on a nuclear power plant will cost Russia more than 4 billion rubles. This, as reported by “RIA Novosti”, is stated in the documentation of the state corporation Roscosmos on the website of state purchases.

This is the Nuclon initiative. As we have already said, this project provides for the creation of a space tug with a nuclear reactor, which will be used in the framework of long-term missions for the study and development of bodies of the solar system.

The device is planned to be equipped with a megawatt-class nuclear reactor. This installation will be able to generate energy for a long time, which will allow transporting cargo and heavy spaceships to the distant planets of the solar system.

It is reported that 4.2 billion rubles will be spent on the Nuklon preliminary project. The first launch of the space tug will be possible no earlier than 2030.

It is planned that a specialized technical complex for the preparation and launch of vehicles with a power module based on a nuclear power propulsion system will be formed at the Vostochny cosmodrome.
