Successful tests of the SeaDrone unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), developed by the Moscow Region company “Shooting From the Air”, have been carried out. The peculiarity of the drone is the ability to operate in harsh climatic conditions.
SeaDrone is designed for Arctic exploration. The drone is capable of being held in the air in strong winds – up to 12 meters per second with gusts up to 18 meters per second. The device is not afraid of low temperatures and exposure to water.
During the tests, test landings and takeoffs of the UAV from the deck of the icebreaker to the water and back were carried out. The drone can withstand strong waves – up to one and a half meters high.
Several use cases are considered for SeaDrone. So, landing on water will allow using the device in search and rescue operations as a means to keep afloat until the arrival of the rescue vessel.
In addition, the drone will help in extinguishing fires and tracking the movements of ice objects. In particular, the drone is capable of marking icebergs with GPS beacons.
The Ministry of Investment, Industry and Science of the Moscow Region notes that previously unmanned aerial vehicles of this level were not used during exploration work in the Arctic latitudes due to extremely difficult climatic conditions for such equipment.
