It became known that domestic manufacturers of telecommunications equipment offered telecom operators to test Russian equipment for fifth generation (5G) communication networks. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the deputy head of the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications Oleg Ivanov.
“Just the other day we had a working group within the ANO “Digital Economy” on this issue. And colleagues from the industry invited telecom operators to participate in testing domestic developments“, – said Mr. Ivanov, answering the question about when the first domestic equipment for 5G networks may appear.
It was noted that telecom operators demonstrated their interest and readiness to explore the possibility of testing 5G equipment of domestic production. It was also said that the construction of 5G networks based on Russian equipment will increase their launch time by a year and a half. Recall that within the framework of the Digital Economy program, sustainable coverage of 5G networks should be provided in 10 Russian cities with a population of one million by 2022, and in cities with a population of 1 million or more, 5G networks should appear by 2024.
It should be noted that the launch of 5G networks in Russia may be delayed due to the difficulties with the allocation of frequencies. For 5G, the most optimal range is 3.4-3.8 GHz, which is already used by the military. “Unfortunately, in the range of 3.4-3.8 GHz, conversion tasks are the most difficult, they cannot be solved in one fell swoop. And now it is very difficult to focus only on this range. We hear our colleagues from the power block that this is often impossible. We look forward to a bilateral dialogue and continue to work. As soon as the opportunity arises, we will use it“, – said Mr. Ivanov, commenting on the issue of allocating frequencies.
The deputy minister also noted that the cost of converting the frequency spectrum in the “gold” range will be high. “There, and the cost is prohibitive, if you deduce. The figures have already been announced in the press – more than 360 billion rubles for the first stage alone. But this is very evaluative and only at the first stage. And even the allocation of these funds will not provide free opportunities to use this range.“, – said Mr. Ivanov.
