Samsung Display is currently developing foldable OLED displays for Google, OPPO and Xiaomi, according to the reputable Korean publication TheElec. The source also says that the devices for which these panels are intended will hit the market before the end of this year.
TheElec report says that the matrix developed for the future OPPO device has a diagonal of 7.7 inches. Moreover, it will be made in the form factor of a vertical “clamshell”, as, for example, in the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. In addition, it is known that the external display of the projected folding smartphone OPPO will boast a diagonal of 1.5 to 2 inches. Last year, the Chinese company already showed a prototype of a foldable 7.7-inch smartphone developed in collaboration with BOE, Visionox and Samsung Display. However, most likely, the South Korean company will become the only supplier of panels for the serial implementation of this device.
The foldable screen for the Xiaomi smartphone will receive the same design, but its diagonal will already be 8.03 inches. The diagonal of the external display of the foldable Xiaomi smartphone will be 6.38 inches.
The only thing known about the screen, developed by the South Korean manufacturer for Google, will be 7.6 inches.
Obviously, the choice of foldable smartphones will be much wider this year. This can be considered as evidence that the clamshell form factor with a flexible screen has taken root, and such devices will soon leave the category of niche products.
