⇡ # What’s new in Russia and in the world?
Unexpectedly heated discussion in the comments was caused by the news that Tesla became the most expensive automaker in the world, ahead of Toyota. Last Wednesday, the company’s shares rose 5%, reaching $ 1,135 apiece, and Tesla’s total capitalization was $ 206.5 billion. At the same time, Toyota is valued about $ 202 billion. Of course, all this is weakly connected with production volumes and sales – the growth in capitalization is more likely to indicate the huge enthusiasm of investors. For comparison: in the first quarter of 2020, Tesla produced 103 thousand cars, and Toyota – 2.4 million.
To many, this ratio seemed unfair: Tesla recalled a large number of defects (250 breakdowns per 100 cars in the first 90 days of operation) and the fact that the company’s shares sometimes lose value due to one tweet from Ilon Mask. Let me quote our reader named Artem Nikolaev, who briefly and clearly explained why this happened:
“Capital loves growth. Especially – growth rate and potential bar. Therefore, if there is a good asset and the best one that has a higher potential, or rather at least emotional expectations, capital will run away from a good asset (thereby bringing it down) to a better one. Can Toyota grow 10 times, sell 12 million Corollas a year? No, the globe is over, too small. Can Tesla sell 10 times more electric cars? Sure. It is by faith that everything is determined, even if the bias in capitalization for one released car is colossal. The market is not always rational. ”
However, this is not the only controversial event related to Tesla. In the middle of last week, Tesla shareholders were advised to dismiss Ilon Mask so as not to pay $ 55 billion. And this news could be ignored altogether – few would allow such recommendations if Pirc, a well-known and very authoritative advisor to the shareholders, would not have given them. So, the adviser company recommended that investors vote against the Tesla agreement on the payment of remuneration to managers, including CEO Ilon Mask. According to Pirc, the payment could lead to a lawsuit against the company: “The board of directors, including CEO Ilon Musk, reward themselves with excessive compensation packages over a three-year period that allow management to enrich themselves at the company’s expense.”
The advisor company again recalled that Musk often allows himself to make controversial statements on Twitter that affect the value of the company and lead to unnecessary reputational costs. Well, no matter how investors eventually vote, we will continue to closely monitor the topic. It seems that the world has ripened for another story about the dismissal of the creator of the company and his triumphant return – the last time this happened with Apple and Steve Jobs.
Last week, no less scandalous news arose around the Cyberpunk 2077 game project from the Polish CD Projekt RED studio. A week earlier, the company showed the game to select journalists who could play for hours and revealed many previously unknown details. One of them was that the gender of the main character is not determined at all at the time of its creation, and the NPCs choose the appeal he / she based on the tonality of the voice. The holder of a high voice will be defined as a woman, a low one as a man, and this is what infuriated numerous fighters for social justice. And everything seems to be logical, what could go wrong? But according to those who are dissatisfied, such a sex determination scheme offends transgender people and non-binary people who prefer to be contacted by “they” or “it”, and Cyberpunk 2077 does not provide such options. A wave of criticism immediately fell on CD Projekt RED, but it seems that the developer decided to completely ignore it, at least at the time of preparing the material, there were no comments on this subject.
By the way, the official website, as well as the Twitter account of the game, suddenly changed its description and the declared genre. Now Cyberpunk 2077 is called an open-world adventure action game, but most likely it has nothing to do with the demands of social justice fighters. I remind you that the release of Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled for November 19, 2020 on PC, PS4, Xbox One and GeForce Now.
Well, since we have unusually thoroughly touched on the topic of games, then it’s time to remind you that on June 14 Death Stranding officially goes to the PC. We are already preparing detailed testing of video cards in this game, and now, especially for those who are determining the upgrade at the last moment, we briefly talk about what kind of GPU is needed for optimal performance. The good news is that the game works great even on low-cost graphics cards like the Radeon RX 590 or Radeon RX 5500 XT. At least in 1080p or 1440p resolution, both devices guarantee approximately 60 frames per second or more.
In the last issue, we talked in detail about Apple WWDC 2020, updating all operating systems and the upcoming transition of poppies to processors with ARM architecture. At an official presentation, Apple announced that developers will soon be able to get Mac mini on the new platform for their needs. And last week, one of these computers was thoroughly tested and showed good performance even through the emulator. Test results for Mac mini based on Apple A12Z and running the beta version of macOS 11 Big Sur were shared by a Twitter user named Pierre Dandumont.
Geekbench 5 in a single-threaded test gives from 700 to 800 points, and in a multi-threaded test – from 2582 to 2962. For comparison, the 13-inch model of the MacBook Pro notebook based on the Intel Core i5-1038NG7 processor running macOS 10.15 operating system scores about 1200 points, and in multithreaded – about 4400. But it is important to note that in the first case, testing was carried out in the Rosetta 2 emulator, and in the second – without it. And a small bonus for the most curious: read in honor of what Apple decided to call its proprietary emulator.
Sony has officially commented on the upcoming restructuring and renaming. Information about this first appeared in May, and last week the meeting of Sony shareholders approved these changes – the new name will be the Sony Group. Critics have long noted that Sony suffers from the so-called “conglomerate underestimation,” because the name of the company was associated with investors mainly in the electronics market, while in reality the company covers a wider range. By the way, Sony was one of the few companies on which the coronavirus pandemic had a positive impact. Competent business diversification helped Sony offset the losses in the electronics market with positive shifts in the digital entertainment segment, which became more popular during the period of forced isolation of people in the world.
Another important news from Japan was the appearance of the world a huge king-SSD from a whole 300 mm plate from Kioxia. A chief engineer for the company, named Shigeo Oshima, announced the development of a concept called “one plate – one SSD.” According to the engineers’ idea, the production of SSDs from a whole silicon wafer with flash memory chips will save money on a number of intermediate steps, namely, cutting and packing individual crystals, chip testing, on an SSD circuit board, and on assembling the SSDs themselves. Another advantage of this approach promises to be stunning performance, thanks to access to hundreds of parallel memory chips.
However, most likely this solution is unlikely to reach end users. At least initially, the company expects to cover corporate systems, for which it will additionally have to develop and implement a new SSD form factor.
Well, of course, we could not ignore the next announcement of the available Xiaomi smartphones. You can learn all the details from the corresponding publication on our website. I would just like to once again draw attention to the fact that smartphones for 80 and 100 US dollars – that is how much the Redmi 9A and Redmi 9C will cost – offer such a set of functions that was previously considered sufficient for flagship models. There is a triple main camera (in the older model) and 6.53-inch displays with a drop-shaped cutout. In general, Xiaomi is still a cake, and in 2020 with its pandemics, updates and other delights, this is especially pleasing.

Another new Xiaomi product was highlighted last week in our reviews. Alexander Babulin tested the Redmi Note 9 Pro smartphone and came to the conclusion that now Chinese manufacturers have begun to pay due attention to minor, at first glance, trifles. For those who are wondering how this smartphone differs from the usual 9S, let’s say right away: almost nothing. But this “almost” is enough to write the Pro-version of the editorial recommendation.
In the gaming section, there was a review of the failed Disintegration project, as well as an incredibly interesting story about the images of samurai and ninja in video games, dedicated to the upcoming release of Ghost of Tsushima on PS4.
Sergey Plotnikov released two hit materials at once last week. Firstly, this is a review of the MSI GS66 Stealth laptop, which (cheers!) Has ceased to look like a Christmas tree and is quite suitable for the role of a universal machine for those who like to play games. And secondly – a fresh, July issue of the “computer of the month”, which hardly needs to be introduced. In addition, we had a review of the Gigabyte Z490 Aorus Xtreme motherboard and a review of the pretty smart JBL Link Music speaker with Alice.
And finally, the last issues of weekly digests:
