shipments fell 5.3%

Specialists from Jon Peddie Research (JPR) prepared a fresh analysis of the dynamics of the graphics solutions market for the first quarter of 2020. Experts point to a decrease in shipments of graphics solutions by AMD, NVIDIA and Intel by 5.3% compared to the previous quarter, but at the same time they indicate an increase of this value by 14.9% in annual terms.

Thus, the supply of GPUs from AMD in the first quarter of 2020 decreased by 16.6%, while NVIDIA observed a decrease of 13.6%. Intel, in turn, showed a positive trend in supply growth at 0.5%. At the same time, AMD’s share in the graphics market decreased by 2.3% compared to the previous quarter, while at NVIDIA it decreased by 1.58%. Intel’s share in turn grew by 3.8% compared to the last quarter of 2019.

The graph below shows the general data on shipments (in red) of discrete graphics accelerators (in million pieces), as well as the share of each company in the market according to quarterly results for a single year.

The degree of penetration of the GPU in personal computers has decreased, experts say. In the first quarter, one computer had an average of 1.28 graphics accelerators (taking into account integrated and discrete solutions), and this is 4.8 percentage points less than a quarter earlier. Such dynamics, on the one hand, is explained by the growing popularity among users of discrete video cards of processors (AMD Ryzen or Intel Core F-series) without an integrated graphics core, and on the other hand, by increased sales of systems with integrated graphics alone. They turned out to be in demand during remote work against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In general, experts say, the market for discrete graphics cards for desktop computers in the first quarter of 2020 showed a negative trend, decreasing by 19.53 percentage points compared to the previous reporting period.

The PC market in the first quarter of this year as a whole decreased by 1.73%, but grew by 15.53 percentage points compared to last year. According to Jon Peddie Research analysts, in the first quarter of 2020, there was also a decrease in sales in the tablet segment.
